The quantum Ising chain with a generalized defect

The finite-size scaling properties of the quantum Ising chain with different types of generalized defects are studied. These not only mean an alteration of the coupling constant as previously examined, but an additional arbitrary transformation in the algebra of observables at one site of the chain. One can distinguish between two classes of generalized defects: those which do not affect the finite-size integrability of the Ising chain, and on the other hand those that destroy this property. In this context, finite-size integrability is always understood as a synonym for the possibility to write the Hamiltonian of the finite chain as a bilinear expression in fermionic operators by means of a Jordan-Wigner transformation. Concerning the first type of defect, an exact solution for the scaling spectrum is obtained for the most universal defect that preserves the global Z_2 symmetry of the chain. It is shown that in the continuum limit this yields the same result as for one properly chosen `ordinary' defect, that is changing the coupling constant only, and thus the finite-size scaling spectra can be described by irreps of a shifted u(1) Kac-Moody algebra. The other type of defect is examined by means of numerical finite-size calculations. In contrast to the first case, these suggest a non-continuous dependence of the scaling dimensions on the defect parameters. A conjecture for the operator content involving only one primary field of a Virasoro algebra with central charge c=1/2 is given.

The Bubble Algebra: Structure of a Two-Colour Temperley-Lieb Algebra

We define new diagram algebras providing a sequence of multiparameter generalisations of the Temperley-Lieb algebra, suitable for the modelling of dilute lattice systems of two-dimensional Statistical Mechanics. These algebras give a rigorous foundation to the various "multi-colour algebras" of Grimm, Pearce and others. We determine the generic representation theory of the simplest of these algebras, and locate the nongeneric cases (at roots of unity of the corresponding parameters). We show by this example how the method used (Martin's general procedure for diagram algebras) may be applied to a wide variety of such algebras occurring in Statistical Mechanics. We demonstrate how these algebras may be used to solve the Yang-Baxter equations.

A maximum principle for the mutation-selection equilibrium of nucleotide sequences

We study the equilibrium behaviour of a deterministic four-state mutation-selection model as a model for the evolution of a population of nucleotide sequences in sequence space. The mutation model is the Kimura 3ST mutation scheme, and the selection scheme is assumed to be invariant under permutation of sites. Considering the evolution process both forward and backward in time, we use the ancestral distribution as the stationary state of the backward process to derive an expression for the mutational loss (as the difference between ancestral and population mean fitness), and we prove a maximum principle that determines the population mean fitness in mutation-selection balance.

Duality and conformal twisted boundaries in the Ising model

There has been recent interest in conformal twisted boundary conditions and their realisations in solvable lattice models. For the Ising and Potts quantum chains, these amount to boundary terms that are related to duality, which is a proper symmetry of the model at criticality. Thus, at criticality, the duality-twisted Ising model is translationally invariant, similar to the more familiar cases of periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions. The complete finite-size spectrum of the Ising quantum chain with this peculiar boundary condition is obtained.

A Note on Shelling

The radial distribution function is a characteristic geometric quantity of a point set in Euclidean space that reflects itself in the corresponding diffraction spectrum and related objects of physical interest. The underlying combinatorial and algebraic structure is well understood for crystals, but less so for non-periodic arrangements such as mathematical quasicrystals or model sets. In this note, we summarise several aspects of central versus averaged shelling, illustrate the difference with explicit examples, and discuss the obstacles that emerge with aperiodic order.

On the Entropy and Letter Frequencies of Ternary Square-Free Words

We enumerate all ternary length-l square-free words, which are words avoiding squares of words up to length l, for l<=24. We analyse the singular behaviour of the corresponding generating functions. This leads to new upper entropy bounds for ternary square-free words. We then consider ternary square-free words with fixed letter densities, thereby proving exponential growth for certain ensembles with various letter densities. We derive consequences for the free energy and entropy of ternary square-free words.

Energy spectra and eigenstates of quasiperiodic tight-binding Hamiltonians

Analytic and numerical results for quasiperiodic tight-binding models are reviewed, with emphasis on two and three-dimensional models which so far are beyond a mathematically rigorous treatment. In particular, we consider energy spectra of aperiodic tight-binding models and the corresponding level statistics, which are well reproduced by random matrix theory. The eigenstates are characterised by multifractal analysis, and a construction of peculiar multifractal states on the Penrose tiling is discussed. We also consider quantum diffusion, and present some results on interacting electron systems in one dimension.

Combinatorial problems of (quasi-)crystallography

Several combinatorial problems of (quasi-)crystallography are reviewed with special emphasis on a unified approach, valid for both crystals and quasicrystals. In particular, we consider planar sublattices, similarity sublattices, coincidence sublattices, their module counterparts, and central and averaged shelling. The corresponding counting functions are encapsulated in Dirichlet series generating functions, with explicit results for the triangular lattice and the twelvefold symmetric shield tiling. Other combinatorial properties are briefly summarised.

What is Aperiodic Order?

The theory of aperiodic order is concerned with the development of ideas stimulated by the discovery of quasicrystals. We give a gentle introduction to some mathematical aspects of aperiodic order, aimed at a more general audience.

Spectrum of a duality-twisted Ising quantum chain

The Ising quantum chain with a peculiar twisted boundary condition is considered. This boundary condition, first introduced in the framework of the spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg quantum chain, is related to the duality transformation, which becomes a symmetry of the model at the critical point. Thus, at the critical point, the Ising quantum chain with the duality-twisted boundary is translationally invariant, similar as in the case of the usual periodic or antiperiodic boundary conditions. The complete energy spectrum of the Ising quantum chain is calculated analytically for finite systems, and the conformal properties of the scaling limit are investigated. This provides an explicit example of a conformal twisted boundary condition and a corresponding generalised twisted partition function.

The spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg chain, the quantum algebra U_q[sl(2)], and duality transformations for minimal models

The finite-size scaling spectra of the spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg chain with toroidal boundary conditions and an even number of sites provide a projection mechanism yielding the spectra of models with a central charge c<1 including the unitary and non-unitary minimal series. Taking into account the half-integer angular momentum sectors - which correspond to chains with an odd number of sites - in many cases leads to new spinor operators appearing in the projected systems. These new sectors in the XXZ chain correspond to a new type of frustration lines in the projected minimal models. The corresponding new boundary conditions in the Hamiltonian limit are investigated for the Ising model and the 3-state Potts model and are shown to be related to duality transformations which are an additional symmetry at their self-dual critical point. By different ways of projecting systems we find models with the same central charge sharing the same operator content and modular invariant partition function which however differ in the distribution of operators into sectors and hence in the physical meaning of the operators involved. Related to the projection mechanism in the continuum there are remarkable symmetry properties of the finite XXZ chain. The observed degeneracies in the energy and momentum spectra are shown to be the consequence of intertwining relations involving U_q[sl(2)] quantum algebra transformations.

Colourings of planar quasicrystals

The investigation of colour symmetries for periodic and aperiodic systems consists of two steps. The first concerns the computation of the possible numbers of colours and is mainly combinatorial in nature. The second is algebraic and determines the actual colour symmetry groups. Continuing previous work, we present the results of the combinatorial part for planar patterns with n-fold symmetry, where n=7,9,15,16,20,24. This completes the cases with values of n such that Euler's totient function of n is less than or equal to eight.

Partition function zeros of aperiodic Ising models

We consider Ising models defined on periodic approximants of aperiodic graphs. The model contains only a single coupling constant and no magnetic field, so the aperiodicity is entirely given by the different local environments of neighbours in the aperiodic graph. In this case, the partition function zeros in the temperature variable, also known as the Fisher zeros, can be calculated by diagonalisation of finite matrices. We present the partition function zero patterns for periodic approximants of the Penrose and the Ammann-Beenker tiling, and derive precise estimates of the critical temperatures.

Improved bounds on the number of ternary square-free words

Improved upper and lower bounds on the number of square-free ternary words are obtained. The upper bound is based on the enumeration of square-free ternary words up to length 110. The lower bound is derived by constructing generalised Brinkhuis triples. The problem of finding such triples can essentially be reduced to a combinatorial problem, which can efficiently be treated by computer. In particular, it is shown that the number of square-free ternary words of length n grows at least as 65^(n/40), replacing the previous best lower bound of 2^(n/17).

Aperiodicity and Disorder - Does it Matter?

The effects of an aperiodic order or a random disorder on phase transitions in statistical mechanics are discussed. A heuristic relevance criterion based on scaling arguments as well as specific results for Ising models with random disorder or certain kinds of aperiodic order are reviewed. In particular, this includes an exact real-space renormalization treatment of the Ising quantum chains with coupling constants modulated according to substitution sequences, related to a two-dimensional classical Ising model with layered disorder.

Trace and antitrace maps for aperiodic sequences, their extensions and applications

We study aperiodic systems based on substitution rules by means of a transfer-matrix approach. In addition to the well-known trace map, we investigate the so-called `antitrace' map, which is the corresponding map for the difference of the off-diagonal elements of the 2x2 transfer matrix. The antitrace maps are obtained for various binary, ternary and quaternary aperiodic sequences, such as the Fibonacci, Thue-Morse, period-doubling, Rudin-Shapiro sequences, and certain generalizations. For arbitrary substitution rules, we show that not only trace maps, but also antitrace maps exist. The dimension of the our antitrace map is r(r+1)/2, where r denotes the number of basic letters in the aperiodic sequence. Analogous maps for specific matrix elements of the transfer matrix can also be constructed, but the maps for the off-diagonal elements and for the difference of the diagonal elements coincide with the antitrace map. Thus, from the trace and antitrace map, we can determine any physical quantity related to the global transfer matrix of the system. As examples, we employ these dynamical maps to compute the transmission coefficients for optical multilayers, harmonic chains, and electronic systems.

Energy spectra, wavefunctions and quantum diffusion for quasiperiodic systems

We study energy spectra, eigenstates and quantum diffusion for one- and two-dimensional quasiperiodic tight-binding models. As our one-dimensional model system we choose the silver mean or `octonacci' chain. The two-dimensional labyrinth tiling, which is related to the octagonal tiling, is derived from a product of two octonacci chains. This makes it possible to treat rather large systems numerically. For the octonacci chain, one finds singular continuous energy spectra and critical eigenstates which is the typical behaviour for one-dimensional Schr"odinger operators based on substitution sequences. The energy spectra for the labyrinth tiling can, depending on the strength of the quasiperiodic modulation, be either band-like or fractal-like. However, the eigenstates are multifractal. The temporal spreading of a wavepacket is described in terms of the autocorrelation function C(t) and the mean square displacement d(t). In all cases, we observe power laws for C(t) and d(t) with exponents -delta and beta, respectively. For the octonacci chain, 0<delta<1, whereas for the labyrinth tiling a crossover is observed from delta=1 to 0<delta<1 with increasing modulation strength. Corresponding to the multifractal eigenstates, we obtain anomalous diffusion with 0<beta<1 for both systems. Moreover, we find that the behaviour of C(t) and d(t) is independent of the shape and the location of the initial wavepacket. We use our results to check several relations between the diffusion exponent beta and the fractal dimensions of energy spectra and eigenstates that were proposed in the literature.

Averaged shelling for quasicrystals

The shelling of crystals is concerned with counting the number of atoms on spherical shells of a given radius and a fixed centre. Its straight-forward generalization to quasicrystals, the so-called central shelling, leads to non-universal answers. As one way to cope with this situation, we consider shelling averages over all quasicrystal points. We express the averaged shelling numbers in terms of the autocorrelation coefficients and give explicit results for the usual suspects, both perfect and random.
