Two interacting particles at the metal-insulator transition

To investigate the influence of electronic interaction on the metal-insulator transition (MIT), we consider the Aubry-André (or Harper) model which describes a quasiperiodic one-dimensional quantum system of non-interacting electrons and exhibits an MIT. For a two-particle system, we study the effect of a Hubbard interaction on the transition by means of the transfer-matrix method and finite-size scaling. In agreement with previous studies we find that the interaction localizes some states in the otherwise metallic phase of the system. Nevertheless, the MIT remains unaffected by the interaction. For a long-range interaction, many more states become localized for sufficiently large interaction strength and the MIT appears to shift towards smaller quasiperiodic potential strength.

Exact Eigenstates of Tight-Binding Hamiltonians on the Penrose Tiling

We investigate exact eigenstates of tight-binding models on the planar rhombic Penrose tiling. We consider a vertex model with hopping along the edges and the diagonals of the rhombi. For the wave functions, we employ an ansatz, first introduced by Sutherland, which is based on the arrow decoration that encodes the matching rules of the tiling. Exact eigenstates are constructed for particular values of the hopping parameters and the eigenenergy. By a generalized ansatz that exploits the inflation symmetry of the tiling, we show that the corresponding eigenenergies are infinitely degenerate. Generalizations and applications to other systems are outlined.

Aperiodic Ising Quantum Chains

Some years ago, Luck proposed a relevance criterion for the effect of aperiodic disorder on the critical behaviour of ferromagnetic Ising systems. In this article, we show how Luck's criterion can be derived within an exact renormalisation scheme for Ising quantum chains with coupling constants modulated according to substitution rules. Luck's conjectures for this case are confirmed and refined. Among other outcomes, we give an exact formula for the correlation length critical exponent for arbitrary two-letter substitution sequences with marginal fluctuations of the coupling constants.

Coordination sequences for root lattices and related graphs

The coordination sequence s(k) of a graph counts the number of its vertices which have distance k from a given vertex, where the distance between two vertices is defined as the minimal number of bonds in any path connecting them. For a large class of graphs, including in particular the classical root lattices, we present the coordination sequences and their generating functions, summarizing and extending recent results of Conway and Sloane. A possible application to the theory of critical phenomena in lattice models is outlined.

Representations of Two-Colour BWM Algebras and Solvable Lattice Models

Many of the known solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation, which are related to solvable lattice models of vertex- and IRF-type, yield representations of the Birman-Wenzl-Murakami algebra. From these, representations of a two-colour generalization of the Birman-Wenzl-Murakami algebra can be constructed, which in turn are used to derive trigonometric solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. In spirit, this construction resembles the fusion procedure, in the sense that starting from known solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation new solutions can be obtained.

Scaling Limit of the Ising Model in a Field

The dilute A_3 model is a solvable IRF (interaction round a face) model with three local states and adjacency conditions encoded by the Dynkin diagram of the Lie algebra A_3. It can be regarded as a solvable version of an Ising model at the critical temperature in a magnetic field. One therefore expects the scaling limit to be governed by Zamolodchikov's integrable perturbation of the c=1/2 conformal field theory. Indeed, a recent thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz approach succeeded to unveil the corresponding E_8 structure under certain assumptions on the nature of the Bethe Ansatz solutions. In order to check these conjectures, we perform a detailed numerical investigation of the solutions of the Bethe Ansatz equations for the critical and off-critical model. Scaling functions for the ground-state corrections and for the lowest spectral gaps are obtained, which give very precise numerical results for the lowest mass ratios in the massive scaling limit. While these agree perfectly with the E_8 mass ratios, we observe one state which seems to violate the assumptions underlying the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz calculation. We also analyze the critical spectrum of the dilute A_3 model, which exhibits massive excitations on top of the massless states of the Ising conformal field theory.

Aperiodic Ising Models

We consider several aspects of non-periodic Ising models in one and two dimensions. Here we are not interested in random systems, but rather in models with intrinsic long-range aperiodic order. The most prominent examples in one dimension are sequences generated by substitution rules on a finite alphabet. The classical one-dimensional Ising chain as well as the Ising quantum chain with coupling constants modulated according to substitution sequences are considered. Both the distribution of Lee-Yang zeros on the unit circle in the classical case and that of fermion frequencies in the quantum model show characteristic gap structures which follow the gap labeling theorem of Bellissard. We also investigate the zero-field Ising model on two-dimensional aperiodic graphs, which are constructed from rectangular grids in the same spirit as the so-called Labyrinth. Here, duality arguments and exact solutions in the sense of commuting transfer matrices are used to gain information about the critical behaviour.

Scaling Properties of the Ising Model in a Field

The dilute A_3 model is a solvable IRF (interaction-round-a-face) model with three local states and adjacency conditions encoded by the Dynkin diagram of the Lie algebra A_3. It can be regarded as a solvable version of a critical Ising model in a magnetic field. One therefore expects the scaling limit to be governed by Zamolodchikov's integrable perturbation of the c=1/2 conformal field theory. We perform a detailed numerical investigation of the solutions of the Bethe ansatz equation for the off-critical model. Our results agree perfectly with the predicted values for the lowest masses of the stable particles and support the assumptions on the nature of the Bethe ansatz solutions which enter crucially in a recent thermodynamic Bethe ansatz calculation of the factorized scattering matrix.

Dilute Algebras and Solvable Lattice Models

The definition of a dilute braid-monoid algebra is briefly reviewed. The construction of solvable vertex and interaction-round-a-face models built on representations of the dilute Temperley-Lieb and Birman-Wenzl-Murakami algebras is discussed.

Yang-Baxter algebras based on the two-colour BWM algebra

We present a Baxterization of a two-colour generalization of the Birman--Wenzl--Murakami (BWM) algebra. Appropriately combining two RSOS-type representations of the ordinary BWM algebra, we construct representations of the two-colour algebra. Using the Baxterization, this provides new RSOS-type solutions to the Yang--Baxter equation.

Fusion of Dilute $A_L$ Lattice Models

The fusion procedure is implemented for the dilute $A_L$ lattice models and a fusion hierarchy of functional equations with an $su(3)$ structure is derived for the fused transfer matrices. We also present the Bethe ansatz equations for the dilute $A_L$ lattice models and discuss their connection with the fusion hierarchy. The solution of the fusion hierarchy for the eigenvalue spectra of the dilute $A_L$ lattice models will be presented in a subsequent paper.

Solvable RSOS models based on the dilute BWM algebra

In this paper we present representations of the recently introduced dilute Birman-Wenzl-Murakami algebra. These representations, labelled by the level-$l$ B$^{(1)}_n$, C$^{(1)}_n$ and D$^{(1)}_n$ affine Lie algebras, are Baxterized to yield solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. The thus obtained critical solvable models are RSOS counterparts of the, respectively, D$^{(2)}_{n+1}$, $A^{(2)}_{2n}$ and B$^{(1)}_n$ $R$-matrices of Bazhanov and Jimbo. For the D$^{(2)}_{n+1}$ and B$^{(1)}_n$ algebras the RSOS models are new. An elliptic extension which solves the Yang-Baxter equation is given for all three series of dilute RSOS models.

Trigonometric R Matrices related to `Dilute' Birman--Wenzl--Murakami Algebra

Explicit expressions for three series of $R$ matrices which are related to a ``dilute'' generalisation of the Birman--Wenzl--Murakami are presented. Of those, one series is equivalent to the quantum $R$ matrices of the $D^{(2)}_{n+1}$ generalised Toda systems whereas the remaining two series appear to be new.

Dilute Birman--Wenzl--Murakami Algebra and $D^{(2)}_{n+1}$ models

A ``dilute'' generalisation of the Birman--Wenzl--Murakami algebra is considered. It can be ``Baxterised'' to a solution of the Yang--Baxter algebra. The $D^{(2)}_{n+1}$ vertex models are examples of corresponding solvable lattice models and can be regarded as the dilute version of the $B^{(1)}_{n}$ vertex models.

Multi-Colour Braid-Monoid Algebras

We define multi-colour generalizations of braid-monoid algebras and present explicit matrix representations which are related to two-dimensional exactly solvable lattice models of statistical mechanics. In particular, we show that the two-colour braid-monoid algebra describes the Yang-Baxter algebra of the critical dilute A-D-E models which were recently introduced by Warnaar, Nienhuis, and Seaton as well as by Roche. These and other solvable models related to dense and dilute loop models are discussed in detail and it is shown that the solvability is a direct consequence of the algebraic structure. It is conjectured that the Yang-Baxterization of general multi-colour braid-monoid algebras will lead to the construction of further solvable lattice models.
