Bilateral Gamma distributions and processes in financial mathematics

We present a class of Lévy processes for modelling financial market fluctuations: Bilateral Gamma processes. Our starting point is to explore the properties of bilateral Gamma distributions, and then we turn to their associated Lévy processes. We treat exponential Lévy stock models with an underlying bilateral Gamma process as well as term structure models driven by bilateral Gamma processes and apply our results to a set of real financial data (DAX 1996-1998).

On the shapes of bilateral Gamma densities

We investigate the four parameter family of bilateral Gamma distributions. The goal of this paper is to provide a thorough treatment of the shapes of their densities, which is of importance for assessing their fitting properties to sets of real data. This includes appropriate representations of the densities, analyzing their smoothness, unimodality and asymptotic behaviour.

Option pricing in bilateral Gamma stock models

In the framework of bilateral Gamma stock models we seek for adequate option pricing measures, which have an economic interpretation and allow numerical calculations of option prices. Our investigations encompass Esscher transforms, minimal entropy martingale measures, $p$-optimal martingale measures, bilateral Esscher transforms and the minimal martingale measure. We illustrate our theory by a numerical example.

Exponential stock models driven by tempered stable processes

We investigate exponential stock models driven by tempered stable processes, which constitute a rich family of purely discontinuous Lévy processes. With a view of option pricing, we provide a systematic analysis of the existence of equivalent martingale measures, under which the model remains analytically tractable. This includes the existence of Esscher martingale measures and martingale measures having minimal distance to the physical probability measure. Moreover, we provide pricing formulae for European call options and perform a case study.

Tempered stable distributions and processes

We investigate the class of tempered stable distributions and their associated processes. Our analysis of tempered stable distributions includes limit distributions, parameter estimation and the study of their densities. Regarding tempered stable processes, we deal with density transformations and compute their $p$-variation indices. Exponential stock models driven by tempered stable processes are discussed as well.

Statistical inference for discrete-time samples from affine stochastic delay differential equations

Statistical inference for discrete time observations of an affine stochastic delay differential equation is considered. The main focus is on maximum pseudo-likelihood estimators, which are easy to calculate in practice. A more general class of prediction-based estimating functions is investigated as well. In particular, the optimal prediction-based estimating function and the asymptotic properties of the estimators are derived. The maximum pseudo-likelihood estimator is a particular case, and an expression is found for the efficiency loss when using the maximum pseudo-likelihood estimator, rather than the computationally more involved optimal prediction-based estimator. The distribution of the pseudo-likelihood estimator is investigated in a simulation study. Two examples of affine stochastic delay equation are considered in detail.
