The RD50-MPW4: A Radiation Hard HV CMOS Sensor for Future Colliders

The former CERN RD50 collaboration develops monolithic active pixel high voltage (HV) CMOS sensors for future colliders with the aim of high radiation tolerance, good time resolution, and high granularity pixel detectors. The most recent prototype, the RD50-MPW4, was produced by LFoundry in December 2023 using a 150 nm CMOS process. It features a matrix of 64x64 pixels with a 62 $μ$m pitch and employs a column-drain readout architecture. Compared to its predecessor, it now has separate analog and digital power domains and a new biasing scheme with a guard ring structure that supports bias voltages over 600 V. This contribution will discuss the design and latest results of the MPW4, where tests with unirradiated samples showed more than 99.9% efficiency, 16 $μ$m spatial resolution and 10 ns timing resolution. Efficiencies of over 99% were achieved for samples irradiated to fluences of $1 \times 10^{15}$ 1 MeV n$_{\mathrm{eq}}/\mathrm{cm}^2$. A 3D map of the charge collection efficiency from a measurement with two-photon absorption laser is presented that nicely outlines the depletion depth of this radiation hard, high granularity monolithic active pixel sensor.

The Timepix4 Beam Telescope

The spatial and temporal performance of a telescope system comprising planar silicon sensors bump-bonded to Timepix4-v2 ASICs are assessed at the CERN SPS using a $180$~GeV/$c$ mixed hadron beam. The pointing resolution at the centre of the telescope is $2.3 \pm 0.1\;\mathrm{μm}$ and $2.4 \pm 0.1\mathrm{μm}$ in x and y directions, respectively. The temporal resolution for the combined timestamps on a track using only the information from the Timepix4 planes is found to be $92 \pm 5$~ps. The telescope is extensively described including its data acquisition system and dedicated software as well as the corrections applied to the raw measurements.

TelePix2: Full scale fast region of interest trigger and timing for the EUDET-style telescopes at the DESY II Test Beam Facility

With increasing demands by future and current upgrades of particle physics experiments on rate capabilities and time resolution, the requirements on test beams are also increasing. The current infrastructure at the DESY II test beam facility includes particle tracking telescopes with long integration times, no additional timing but excellent spatial resolution. This results in readouts with multiple particles per trigger, causing ambiguities in tracking and assigning particles to triggers. Also, it is likely not to trigger on particles that pass through a small device under test, leading to inefficient data taking. These issues can be solved by adding TelePix2 as a timing and flexible region of interest trigger layer. TelePix2 is a full scale HV-CMOS chip based on the successful small scale prototype TelePix. The DAQ system and the sensors performance featuring efficiencies above 99 % and a time resolution of 3.844(2) ns are presented. The integration into EUDAQ2 and the AIDA-TLU to seamlessly work in the test beam environment as well as into the analysis chain is described. First successful use cases are highlighted to conclude that TelePix2 is a well-suited timing and trigger layer for test beams

Double-hit separation and dE/dx resolution of a time projection chamber with GEM readout

A time projection chamber (TPC) with micropattern gaseous detector (MPGD) readout is investigated as main tracking device of the International Large Detector (ILD) concept at the planned International Linear Collider (ILC). A prototype TPC equipped with a triple gas electron multiplier (GEM) readout has been built and operated in an electron test beam. The TPC was placed in a 1 T solenoidal field at the DESY II Test Beam Facility, which provides an electron beam up to 6 GeV/c. The performance of the readout modules, in particular the spatial point resolution, is determined and compared to earlier tests. New studies are presented with first results on the separation of close-by tracks and the capability of the system to measure the specific energy loss dE/dx. This is complemented by a simulation study on the optimization of the readout granularity to improve particle identification by dE/dx.

Recent Performance Studies of the GEM-based TPC Readout (DESY Module)

For the International Large Detector (ILD) at the planned International Linear Collider (ILC) a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) is foreseen as the main tracking detector. To achieve the required point resolution, Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGD) will be used in the amplification stage. A readout module using a stack of three Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM) for gas amplification was developed at DESY and tested at the DESY II Test Beam Facility. After introducing the readout module and the infrastructure at the test beam facility, the performance related to single point and double-hit resolution of three of these modules is presented. This is followed by results on the particle identification capabilities of the system, using the specific energy loss dE/dx, and simulation studies, aimed to investigate and quantify the impact of high granularity on dE/dx resolution. In addition, a new and improved TPC field cage and the LYCORIS Large-Area Silicon-Strip Telescope for the test beam are described. The LYCORIS beam telescope is foreseen to provide a precise reference of the particle trajectory to validate the momentum resolution measured with a large TPC prototype. For this purpose, it is being installed and tested at the test beam facility within the so-called PCMAG (Persistent Current Magnet).

Studies on Particle Identification with dE/dx for the ILD TPC

For the International Large Detector (ILD) at the planned International Linear Collider (ILC) a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) is foreseen as the main tracking detector. To achieve the required point resolution, Micro Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGD) will be used in the amplification stage. A readout module using a stack of three Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM) for gas amplification was developed at DESY. In a test campaign at the DESY II Test Beam Facility the performance of three of these modules was investigated. In this contribution results were presented on the particle identification capabilities of the system using the specific energy loss (dE/dx). The results from the prototype were used to extrapolate to the performance of the full ILD TPC, where a dE/dx resolution of better than 5 % could be achieved. In addition, simulation studies were performed to optimise the readout pad size for improved dE/dx separation power. These studies also investigated the possibility to measure the deposited energy by counting the number of ionisation clusters (cluster counting). For small enough pads this approach was found to give similar or better performance compared to the traditional method of measuring the deposited charge.

The DESY II Test Beam Facility

DESY Hamburg operates a test beam facility with three independent beam lines at the DESY II synchrotron. It is world-wide one of very few facilities providing test beams in the GeV range. To this end, it offers electron/positron beams with user-selectable momenta from 1-6 GeV/c. The available infrastructure for the users is unique, including a high field solenoidal magnet and permanently installed high-precision pixel beam telescopes. This publication gives a detailed description of the facility, the available infrastructure, and the simulated and measured performance.
