Comparing Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and extended degree: the borderline cases

Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and any extended degree function can be thought of as complexity measures for the structure of finitely generated graded modules. A recent result of Doering, Gunston, Vasconcelos shows that both can be compared in case of a graded algebra. We extend this result to modules and analyze when the estimate is in fact an equality. A complete classification is obtained if we choose as extended degree the homological or the smallest extended degree. The corresponding algebras are characterized in three ways: by relations among the algebra generators, by using generic initial ideals, and by their Hilbert series.

The Hilbert scheme of degree two curves and certain ropes

We study families of ropes of any codimension that are supported on lines. In particular, this includes all non-reduced curves of degree two. We construct suitable smooth parameter spaces and conclude that all ropes of fixed degree and genus lie in the same component of the corresponding Hilbert scheme. We show that this component is generically smooth if the genus is small enough unless the characteristic of the ground field is two and the curves under consideration have degree two. In this case the component is non-reduced.

Characterization of some projective subschemes by locally free resolutions

A locally free resolution of a subscheme is by definition an exact sequence consisting of locally free sheaves (except the ideal sheaf) which has uniqueness properties like a free resolution. The purpose of this paper is to characterize certain locally Cohen-Macaulay subschemes by means of locally free resolutions. First we achieve this for arithmetically Buchsbaum subschemes. This leads to the notion of an $Ω$-resolution and extends a result of Chang. Second we characterize quasi-Buchsbaum subschemes by means of weak $Ω$-resolutions. Finally, we describe the weak $Ω$-resolutions which belong to arithmetically Buchsbaum surfaces of codimension two. Various applications of our results are given.

Non-degenerate curves with maximal Hartshorne-Rao module

Extending results for space curves we establish bounds for the cohomology of a non-degenerate curve in projective $n$-space. As a consequence, for any given $n$ we determine all possible pairs $(d, g)$ where $d$ is the degree and $g$ is the (arithmetic) genus of the curve. Furthermore, we show that curves attaining our bounds always exist and describe properties of these extremal curves. In particular, we determine the Hartshorne-Rao module, the generic initial ideal and the graded Betti numbers of an extremal curve.

Reduced arithmetically Gorenstein schemes and simplicial polytopes with maximal Betti numbers

An SI-sequence is a finite sequence of positive integers which is symmetric, unimodal and satisfies a certain growth condition. These are known to correspond precisely to the possible Hilbert functions of Artinian Gorenstein algebras with the Weak Lefschetz Property, a property shared by most Artinian Gorenstein algebras. Starting with an arbitrary SI-sequence, we construct a reduced, arithmetically Gorenstein configuration $G$ of linear varieties of arbitrary dimension whose Artinian reduction has the given SI-sequence as Hilbert function and has the Weak Lefschetz Property. Furthermore, we show that $G$ has maximal graded Betti numbers among all arithmetically Gorenstein subschemes of projective space whose Artinian reduction has the Weak Lefschetz Property and the given Hilbert function. As an application we show that over a field of characteristic zero every set of simplicial polytopes with fixed $h$-vector contains a polytope with maximal graded Betti numbers.

Monomial ideals and the Gorenstein liaison class of a complete intersection

It is well known that for a subscheme $V$ in ${\mathbb P}^{n}$ of codimension two, the conditions (1) $V$ is ACM, and (2) $V$ is "licci" (i.e. $V$ is in the liaison class of a complete intersection) are equivalent. In higher codimension, (2) implies (1) but the converse is false. For Gorenstein liaison the analog of (2) is: $(2')$ $V$ is "glicci" (i.e. $V$ is in the Gorenstein liaison class of a complete intersection). It remains true that $(2')$ implies (1) but now the converse is an important open question. Previously the authors described a mechanism for lifting monomial ideals to reduced unions of linear varieties. We show here that if the monomial ideal is Artinian then the corresponding union is glicci. As a consequence, any Hilbert function that occurs among ACM schemes in fact occurs among glicci schemes. This is not true if we restrict to complete intersection links. We also show that any Cohen-Macaulay Borel-fixed monomial ideal is glicci. As a consequence, all ACM subschemes of projective space are glicci up to flat deformation.

Lifting Monomial Ideals

We show how to lift any monomial ideal J in n variables to a saturated ideal I of the same codimension in n+t variables. We show that I has the same graded Betti numbers as J and we show how to obtain the matrices for the resolution of I. The cohomology of I is described. Making general choices for our lifting, we show that I is the ideal of a reduced union of linear varieties with singularities that are `as small as possible' given the cohomological constraints. The case where J is Artinian is the nicest. In the case of curves we obtain stick figures for I, and in the case of points we obtain certain k-configurations which we can describe in a very precise way.
