Effect of fluctuations on the superfluid-supersolid phase transition on the lattice

We derive a controlled expansion into mean field plus fluctuations for the extended Bose-Hubbard model, involving interactions with many neighbors on an arbitrary periodic lattice, and study the superfluid-supersolid phase transition. Near the critical point, the impact of (thermal and quantum) fluctuations on top of the mean field grows, which entails striking effects, such as negative superfluid densities and thermodynamical instability of the superfluid phase -- earlier as expected from mean-field dynamics. We also predict the existence of long-lived "supercooled" states with anomalously large quantum fluctuations.

Bogoliubov theory of quantum correlations in the time-dependent Bose-Hubbard model

By means of an adapted mean-field expansion for large fillings $n\gg1$, we study the evolution of quantum fluctuations in the time-dependent Bose-Hubbard model, starting in the superfluid state and approaching the Mott phase by decreasing the tunneling rate or increasing the interaction strength in time. For experimentally relevant cases, we derive analytical results for the temporal behavior of the number and phase fluctuations, respectively. This allows us to calculate the growth of the quantum depletion and the decay of off-diagonal long-range order. We estimate the conditions for the observability of the time dependence in the correlation functions in the experimental setups with external trapping present. Finally, we discuss the analogy to quantum effects in the early universe during the inflationary epoch.

Vortex quantum creation and winding number scaling in a quenched spinor Bose gas

Motivated by a recent experiment, we study non-equilibrium quantum phenomena taking place in the quench of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate through the zero-temperature phase transition separating the polar paramagnetic and planar ferromagnetic phases. We derive the typical spin domain structure (correlations of the effective magnetization) created by the quench arising due to spin-mode quantum fluctuations, and establish a sample-size scaling law for the creation of spin vortices, which are topological defects in the transverse magnetization.

Dynamical Aspects of Analogue Gravity: The Backreaction of Quantum Fluctuations in Dilute Bose-Einstein Condensates

We discuss the backreaction force exerted by quantum fluctuations in dilute Bose-Einstein condensates onto the motion of the classical background, derived by an ab initio approach from microscopic physics. It is shown that the effective-action method, widely employed in semiclassical quantum gravity, fails to give the full backreaction force. The failure of the effective-action method is traced back, inter alia, to the problem of the correct choice of the fundamental variables and the related operator ordering issues.

A Quantum Top Inside a Bose Josephson Junction

We consider an atomic quantum dot confined between two weakly-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates, where the dot serves as an additional tunneling channel. It is shown that the thus-embedded atomic quantum dot is a pseudospin subject to an external torque, and therefore equivalent to a quantum top. We demonstrate by numerical analysis of the time-dependent coupled evolution equations that this microscopic quantum top is very sensitive to any deviation from linear oscillatory behavior of the condensates. For sufficiently strong dot-condensate coupling, the atomic quantum dot can induce or modify the tunneling between the macroscopic condensates in the two wells.

Sweeping from the superfluid to Mott phase in the Bose-Hubbard model

We study the sweep through the quantum phase transition from the superfluid to the Mott state for the Bose-Hubbard model with a time-dependent tunneling rate $J(t)$. In the experimentally relevant case of exponential decay, $J(t)\propto e^{-γt}$, an adapted mean-field expansion for large fillings $n$ yields a scaling solution for the fluctuations. This enables us to analytically calculate the evolution of the number and phase variations (on-site) and correlations (off-site) for slow ($γ\llμ$), intermediate, and fast (non-adiabatic $γ\ggμ$) sweeps, where $μ$ is the chemical potential. Finally, we derive the dynamical decay of the off-diagonal long-range order as well as the temporal shrinkage of the superfluid fraction in a persistent ring-current setup.

Global singularity-free solution of the Iordanskii force problem

We present a derivation of the transverse force acting on a hydrodynamic vortex in the presence of an incoming sound wave from a global solution of the scattering problem, using the method of matched asymptotic expansions. The solution presented includes a detailed treatment of the interaction of the incident wave with the vortex core, and is free from the singularities in the momentum exchange between vortex and sound wave which have led to contradictory results for the value of the transverse force in the literature.

Quantum backreaction in dilute Bose-Einstein condensates

For many physical systems which can be approximated by a classical background field plus small (linearized) quantum fluctuations, a fundamental question concerns the correct description of the backreaction of the quantum fluctuations onto the dynamics of the classical background. We investigate this problem for the example of dilute atomic/molecular Bose-Einstein condensates, for which the microscopic dynamical behavior is under control. It turns out that the effective-action technique does not yield the correct result in general and that the knowledge of the pseudo-energy-momentum tensor ${<\hat T_{μν}>}$ is not sufficient to describe quantum backreaction.

Mean-field expansion in Bose-Einstein condensates with finite-range interactions

We present a formal derivation of the mean-field expansion for dilute Bose-Einstein condensates with two-particle interaction potentials which are weak and finite-range, but otherwise arbitrary. The expansion allows for a controlled investigation of the impact of microscopic interaction details (e.g., the scaling behavior) on the mean-field approach and the induced higher-order corrections beyond the s-wave scattering approximation.

Quantum simulation of cosmic inflation in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Generalizing the one-component case, we demonstrate that the propagation of sound waves in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates can also be described in terms of effective sonic geometries under appropriate conditions. In comparison with the one-component case, the two-component setup offers more flexibility and several advantages. In view of these advantages, we propose an experiment in which the evolution of the inflaton field, and thereby the generation of density quantum fluctuations in the very early stages of our universe during inflation, can be simulated, realizing a {\em quantum simulation via analogue gravity models}.

Dynamical role of anyonic excitation statistics in rapidly rotating Bose gases

We show that for rotating harmonically trapped Bose gases in a fractional quantum Hall state, the anyonic excitation statistics in the rotating gas can effectively play a {\em dynamical} role. For particular values of the two-dimensional coupling constant $g = -2π\hbar^2 (2k-1)/m$, where $k$ is a positive integer, the system becomes a noninteracting gas of anyons, with exactly obtainable solutions satisfying Bogomol'nyi self-dual order parameter equations. Attractive Bose gases under rapid rotation thus can be stabilized in the thermodynamic limit due to the anyonic statistics of their quasiparticle excitations.

Maximal length of trapped one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates

I discuss a Bogoliubov inequality for obtaining a rigorous bound on the maximal axial extension of inhomogeneous one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates. An explicit upper limit for the aspect ratio of a strongly elongated, harmonically trapped Thomas-Fermi condensate is derived.

Quasiparticle universes in Bose-Einstein condensates

Recent developments in simulating fundamental quantum field theoretical effects in the kinematical context of analogue gravity are reviewed. Specifically, it is argued that a curved space-time generalization of the Unruh-Davies effect -- the Gibbons-Hawking effect in the de Sitter space-time of inflationary cosmological models -- can be implemented and verified in an ultracold gas of bosonic atoms.

Observer dependence for the phonon content of the sound field living on the effective curved space-time background of a Bose-Einstein condensate

We demonstrate that the ambiguity of the particle content for quantum fields in a generally curved space-time can be experimentally investigated in an ultracold gas of atoms forming a Bose-Einstein condensate. We explicitly evaluate the response of a suitable condensed matter detector, an ``Atomic Quantum Dot,'' which can be tuned to measure time intervals associated to different effective acoustic space-times. It is found that the detector response related to laboratory, ``adiabatic,'' and de Sitter time intervals is finite in time and nonstationary, vanishing, and thermal, respectively.

"Cosmological" quasiparticle production in harmonically trapped superfluid gases

We show that a variety of cosmologically motivated effective quasiparticle space-times can be produced in harmonically trapped superfluid Bose and Fermi gases. We study the analogue of cosmological particle production in these effective space-times, induced by trapping potentials and coupling constants possessing an arbitrary time dependence. The WKB probabilities for phonon creation from the superfluid vacuum are calculated, and an experimental procedure to detect quasiparticle production by measuring density-density correlation functions is proposed.

Vortex liquids and vortex quantum Hall states in trapped rotating Bose gases

We discuss the feasibility of quantum Hall states of vortices in trapped low-density two-dimensional Bose gases with large particle interactions. For interaction strengths larger than a critical dimensionless 2D coupling constant $g_c \approx 0.6$, upon increasing the rotation frequency, the system is shown to spatially separate into vortex lattice and melted vortex lattice (vortex liquid) phases. At a first critical frequency, the lattice melts completely, and strongly correlated vortex and particle quantum Hall liquids coexist in inner respectively outer regions of the gas cloud. Finally, at a second critical frequency, the vortex liquid disappears and the strongly correlated particle quantum Hall state fills the whole sample.

Electromagnetomotive force fields in noninertial reference frames and accelerated superconducting quantum interferometers

We discuss the prospects of detecting with high precision the force fields related to noninertiality in superconducting circuits. Special emphasis is laid on the perfectly conducting and perfect diamagnetism analogues of the Tolman-Stewart respectively Barnett effects. The influence of acceleration and rotation on the electrodynamics of superconducting interferometers is explicitly described. In particular, we show how motion induced changes of the oscillation frequency of the local Josephson oscillators in superconducting quantum interference filters can be used for precision measurements of acceleration in free space.
