Non-Newtonian compressible fluids with stochastic right hand side

Fluids with shear-rate-dependent viscosity form a special class of non-Newtonian fluids that play a crucial role in continuum dynamics. We consider a compressible barotropic flow of such fluids, governed by a generalized Navier-Stokes system. Due to the nonlinearity in the elliptic term, obtaining the existence of a weak solutions is challenging. To address this, we introduce the concept of a measure-valued solution, whose existence is established in a very general setting using an abstract theorem on the existence of a Young measure. We also discuss the proof of this key result.

Local-in-time existence of strong solutions to a class of compressible non-Newtonian Navier-Stokes equations

The aim of this article is to show a local-in-time existence of a strong solution to the generalized compressible Navier-Stokes equation for arbitrarily large initial data. The goal is reached by $L^p$-theory for linearized equations which are obtained with help of the Weis multiplier theorem and can be seen as generalization of the work of Shibata and Enomoto (devoted to compressible fluids) to compressible non-Newtonian fluids.

On the Motion of a Body with a Cavity Filled with Magnetohydrodynamic Fluid

We study the dynamics of a coupled system, formed by a rigid body with a cavity entirely filled with magnetohydrodynamic compressible fluid. Our aim is to derive the global existence of the unique classical solutions and weak solutions to this system. Moreover, we show the weak-strong uniqueness principle which means that a weak solution coincides with a strong solution on the time existence of a strong solution, provided they emanate from the same initial data.

On time-periodic solutions to an interaction problem between compressible viscous fluids and viscoelastic beams

In this paper, we study a nonlinear fluid-structure interaction problem between a viscoelastic beam and a compressible viscous fluid. The beam is immersed in the fluid which fills a two-dimensional rectangular domain with periodic boundary conditions. Under the effect of periodic forces acting on the beam and the fluid, at least one time-periodic weak solution is constructed which has a bounded energy and a fixed prescribed mass.

Analysis of a system modelling the interaction between the motion of a spring and a viscous gas

We are concerned with a one dimensional flow of a compressible fluid which may be seen as a simplification of the flow of fluid in a long thin pipe. We assume that the pipe is on one side ended by a spring. The other side of the pipe is let open -- there we assume either inflow or outflow boundary conditions. Such situation can be understood as a toy model for human lungs. We tackle the question of uniqueness and existence of a strong solution for a system modelling the above process, special emphasis is laid upon the estimate of the maximal time of existence.

Nonlinear classifiers for ranking problems based on kernelized SVM

Many classification problems focus on maximizing the performance only on the samples with the highest relevance instead of all samples. As an example, we can mention ranking problems, accuracy at the top or search engines where only the top few queries matter. In our previous work, we derived a general framework including several classes of these linear classification problems. In this paper, we extend the framework to nonlinear classifiers. Utilizing a similarity to SVM, we dualize the problems, add kernels and propose a componentwise dual ascent method.

DeepTopPush: Simple and Scalable Method for Accuracy at the Top

Accuracy at the top is a special class of binary classification problems where the performance is evaluated only on a small number of relevant (top) samples. Applications include information retrieval systems or processes with manual (expensive) postprocessing. This leads to minimizing the number of irrelevant samples above a threshold. We consider classifiers in the form of an arbitrary (deep) network and propose a new method DeepTopPush for minimizing the loss function at the top. Since the threshold depends on all samples, the problem is non-decomposable. We modify the stochastic gradient descent to handle the non-decomposability in an end-to-end training manner and propose a way to estimate the threshold only from values on the current minibatch and one delayed value. We demonstrate the excellent performance of DeepTopPush on visual recognition datasets and two real-world applications. The first one selects a small number of molecules for further drug testing. The second one uses real malware data, where we detected 46\% malware at an extremely low false alarm rate of $10^{-5}$.

On the Motion of a Pendulum with a Cavity Filled with a Compressible Fluid

We study the motion of the coupled system, $\mathscr S$, constituted by a physical pendulum, $\mathscr B$, with an interior cavity entirely filled with a viscous, compressible fluid, $\mathscr F$. The presence of the fluid may strongly affect on the motion of $\mathscr B$. In fact, we prove that, under appropriate assumptions, the fluid acts as a damper, namely, $\mathscr S$ must eventually reach a rest-state. Such a state is characterized by a suitable time-independent density distribution of $\mathscr F$ and a corresponding equilibrium position of the center of mass of $\mathscr S$. These results are proved in the very general class of weak solutions and do not require any restriction on the initial data, other than having a finite energy. We complement our findings with some numerical tests. The latter show, among other things, the interesting property that ``large" compressibility favors the damping effect, since it drastically reduces the time that $\mathscr S$ takes to go to rest.

Relative energy inequality and weak-strong uniqueness]{Relative energy inequality and weak-strong uniqueness for an isothermal non-Newtonian compressible fluid

Our paper deals with three-dimensional nonsteady Navier-Stokes equations for non-Newtonian compressible fluids. It contains a~derivation of the relative energy inequality for the weak solutions to these equations. We show that the standard energy inequality implies the relative energy inequality. Consequently, the relative energy inequality allows us to achieve a weak-strong uniqueness result. In other words, we present that the weak solution of the Navier-Stokes system coincides with the strong solution emanated from the same initial conditions as long as the weak solution exists.

Existence of a weak solution to a nonlinear fluid-structure interaction problem with heat exchange

In this paper, we study a nonlinear interaction problem between a thermoelastic shell and a heat-conducting fluid. The shell is governed by linear thermoelasticity equations and encompasses a time-dependent domain which is filled with a fluid governed by the full Navier-Stokes-Fourier system. The fluid and the shell are fully coupled, giving rise to a novel nonlinear moving boundary fluid-structure interaction problem involving heat exchange. The existence of a weak solution is obtained by combining three approximation techniques -- decoupling, penalization and domain extension. This approximation scheme allows us to use the methods already developed for fluids on moving domains, thus drastically simplifying the analysis at hand.

A Note on Measure-Valued Solutions to the Full Euler System

We construct two particular solutions of the full Euler system which emanate from the same initial data. Our aim is to show that the convex combination of these two solutions form a measure-valued solution which may not be approximated by a sequence of weak solutions. As a result, the weak* closure of the set of all weak solutions, considered as parametrized measures, is not equal to the space of all measure-valued solutions. This is in stark contrast with the incompressible Euler equations.

General Framework for Binary Classification on Top Samples

Many binary classification problems minimize misclassification above (or below) a threshold. We show that instances of ranking problems, accuracy at the top or hypothesis testing may be written in this form. We propose a general framework to handle these classes of problems and show which known methods (both known and newly proposed) fall into this framework. We provide a theoretical analysis of this framework and mention selected possible pitfalls the methods may encounter. We suggest several numerical improvements including the implicit derivative and stochastic gradient descent. We provide an extensive numerical study. Based both on the theoretical properties and numerical experiments, we conclude the paper by suggesting which method should be used in which situation.

Shocks Make the Riemann Problem for the Full Euler System in Multiple Space Dimensions Ill-posed

The question of (non-)uniqueness of one-dimensional self-similar solutions to the Riemann problem for hyperbolic systems of gas dynamics in sets of multi-dimensional admissible weak solutions was addressed in recent years in several papers culminating in [17] with the proof that the Riemann problem for the isentropic Euler system with a power law pressure is ill-posed if the one-dimensional self-similar solution contains a shock. Natural question then arises whether the same holds also for a more involved system of equations, the full Euler system. After the first step in this direction was made in [1], where the ill-posedness was proved in the case of two shocks appearing in the self-similar solution, we prove in this paper that the presence of just one shock in the self-similar solution implies the same outcome, i.e. the existence of infinitely many admissible weak solutions to the multi-dimensional problem.

On the motion of rigid bodies in a perfect fluid

We consider the problem of motion of several rigid bodies immersed in a perfect compressible fluid. Using the method of convex integration we establish the existence of infinitely many weak solutions with {\it a priori} prescribed motion of rigid bodies. In particular, the dynamics is completely \emph{time--reversible} at the motion of rigid bodies although the solutions comply with the standard entropy admissibility criterion.

Global continuity and BMO estimates for non-Newtonian fluids with perfect slip boundary conditions

We study the generalized stationary Stokes system in a bounded domain in the plane equipped with perfect slip boundary conditions. We show natural stability results in oscillatory spaces, i.e. Hölder spaces and Campanato spaces including the border-line spaces of bounded mean oscillations (BMO) and vanishing mean oscillations (VMO). In particular, we show that under appropriate assumptions gradients of solutions are globally continuous. Since the stress tensor is assumed to be governed by a general Orlicz function, our theory includes various cases of (possibly degenerate) shear thickening and shear thinning fluids; including the model case of power law fluids. The global estimates seem to be new even in case of the linear Stokes system.

Non-uniqueness of admissible weak solutions to the compressible Euler equations with smooth initial data

We consider the isentropic Euler equations of gas dynamics in the whole two-dimensional space and we prove the existence of a $C^\infty$ initial datum which admits infinitely many bounded admissible weak solutions. Taking advantage of the relation between smooth solutions to the Euler system and to the Burgers equation we construct a smooth compression wave which collapses into a perturbed Riemann state at some time instant $T > 0$. In order to continue the solution after the formation of the discontinuity, we adjust and apply the theory developed by De Lellis and Székelyhidi and we construct infinitely many solutions. We introduce the notion of an admissible generalized fan subsolution to be able to handle data which are not piecewise constant and we reduce the argument to finding a single generalized subsolution.

On weak solutions to the problem of a rigid body with a cavity filled with a compressible fluid, and their asymptotic behavior

We prove the existence of a weak solution to the equations describing the inertial motions of a coupled system constituted by a rigid body containing a viscous compressible fluid. We then provide a weak-strong uniqueness result that allows us to completely characterize, under certain physical assumptions, the asymptotic behavior in time of the weak solution corresponding to smooth data of restricted "size" and show that it tends to a uniquely determined steady-state.

Low stratifucation of the complete Euler system

The present paper takes advantage of the concept of dissipative measure-valued solutions to show the rigorous derivation of the Euler-Boussinesq (EB) system that has been successfully used in various meteorological models. In particular, we show that EB system can be obtained as a singular limit of the complete Euler system. We provide two types of result - firstly, we treat the case of well-prepared initial data for any sufficiently regular bounded domain. Secondly, we use the dispersive estimates for acoustic equation to tackle the case of the illprepared initial data on an unbounded exterior domain.
