Containment problems for fat point schemes via asymptotic multiplier ideals

We study a multiplier-ideal approach to the containment problem for radical ideals of points in projective space. The expected asymptotic multiplier-ideal computation depends on controlling residual base loci of the relevant symbolic linear systems. We isolate this issue in the notion of clean asymptotic multiplier ideals. Under this hypothesis, a failure of \[ I^{(2r-1)}\not\subseteq I^r \] forces \[ 2r\widehatα(I)\geq α(I^{(2r-1)})+3, \] and in particular $\widehatα(I)\geq 3$. We show that the dual-Hesse configuration is clean although its symbolic systems have a genuinely non-trivial residual asymptotic base part. We also verify cleanliness for star configurations of lines, giving a further infinite family of non-monomial examples, and formulate a cleanliness conjecture for singular loci of line arrangements.

General infinitesimal variations of Hodge structure of ample curves in surfaces

Given a smooth projective complex curve inside a smooth projective surface, one can ask how its Hodge structure varies when the curve moves inside the surface. In this paper we develop a general theory to study the infinitesimal version of this question in the case of ample curves. We can then apply the machinery to show that the infinitesimal variation of Hodge structure of a general deformation of an ample curve in $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$ is an isomorphism.

Rigidity of modular morphisms via Fujita decomposition

In this note we prove that the Torelli, Prym and Spin-Torelli morphisms, as well as covering maps between moduli stacks of projective curves can not be deformed. The proofs use properties of the Fujita decomposition of the Hodge bundle of families of curves.

527 elliptic fibrations on Enriques surfaces

Barth and Peters showed that a general complex Enriques surface has exactly 527 isomorphism classes of elliptic fibrations. We show that every Enriques surface has precisely 527 isomorphism classes of elliptic fibrations when counted with the appropriate multiplicity. Their reducible singular fibers and the multiplicities can be calculated explicitly. The same statements hold over any algebraically closed field of characteristic not two. To explain these results, we construct a moduli space of complex elliptic Enriques surfaces and study the ramification behavior of the forgetful map to the moduli space of unpolarized Enriques surfaces. Curiously, the ramification indices of a similar map compute the hyperbolic volume of the rational polyhedral fundamental domain appearing in the Morrison-Kawamata cone conjecture.

Punctual characterization of the unitary flat bundle of weight 1 PVHS and application to families of curves

In this paper we consider the problem of pointwise determining the fibres of the flat unitary subbundle of a PVHS of weight one. Starting from the associated Higgs field, and assuming the base has dimension $1$, we construct a family of (smooth but possibly non-holomorphic) morphisms of vector bundles with the property that the intersection of their kernels at a general point is the fibre of the flat subbundle. We explore the first one of these morphisms in the case of a geometric PVHS arising from a family of smooth projective curves, showing that it acts as the cup-product with some sort of "second-order Kodaira-Spencer class" which we introduce, and check in the case of a family of smooth plane curves that this additional condition is non-trivial.

Families of curves with Higgs field of arbitrarily large kernel

In this note we consider the flat bundle U and the kernel K of the Higgs field naturally associated to any (polarized) variation of Hodge structures of weight 1. We study how strict the inclusion of U in K can be in the geometric case. More precisely, for any smooth projective curve C of genus g (at least 2) and any k (between 0 and g-1), we construct non-isotrivial deformations of C over a quasi-projecive base such that K has rank k and U has rank at most (g+1)/2.

Multiplicities of jumping points for mixed multiplier ideals

In this paper we make a systematic study of the multiplicity of the jumping points associated to the mixed multiplier ideals of a family of ideals in a complex surface with rational singularities. In particular we study the behaviour of the multiplicity by small perturbations of the jumping points. We also introduce a Poincaré series for mixed multiplier ideals and prove its rationality. Finally, we study the set of divisors that contribute to the log-canonical wall.

Automorphisms of minimal entropy on supersingular K3 surfaces

In this article we give a strategy to decide whether the logarithm of a given Salem number is realized as entropy of an automorphism of a supersingular K3 surface in positive characteristic. As test case it is proved that $\log λ_d$, where $λ_d$ is the minimal Salem number of degree $d$, is realized in characteristic $5$ if and only if $d\leq 22$ is even and $d\neq 18$. In the complex projective setting we settle the case of entropy $\log λ_{12}$ left open by McMullen, by giving the construction. A necessary and sufficient test is developed to decide whether a given isometry of a hyperbolic lattice, with spectral radius bigger than one, is positive, i.e. preserves a chamber of the positive cone.

Poincaré series of multiplier ideals in two-dimensional local rings with rational singularities

We study the multiplicity of the jumping numbers of an $\mathfrak m$-primary ideal $\mathfrak a$ in a two-dimensional local ring with a rational singularity. The formula we provide for the multiplicities leads to a very simple and efficient method to detect whether a given rational number is a jumping number. We also give an explicit description of the Poincaré series of multiplier ideals associated to $\mathfrak a$ proving, in particular, that it is a rational function.

Determining plane curve singularities from its polars

This paper addresses a very classical topic that goes back at least to Plücker: how to understand a plane curve singularity using its polar curves. Here, we explicitly construct the singular points of a plane curve singularity directly from the weighted cluster of base points of its polars. In particular, we determine the equisingularity class (or topological equivalence class) of a germ of plane curve from the equisingularity class of generic polars and combinatorial data about the non-singular points shared by them.

Xiao's conjecture for general fibred surfaces

We prove that the genus $g$, the relative irregularity $q_f$ and the Clifford index $c_f$ of a non-isotrivial fibration $f$ satisfy the inequality $q_f \leq g - c_f$. This gives in particular a proof of Xiao's conjecture for fibrations whose general fibres have maximal Clifford index.

Grassmannian BGG Complexes and Hodge numbers of irregular varieties

In this paper we investigate the exactness of the Grassmannian BGG complexes introduced in a previous work (arXiv:1211.2486), and obtain some inequalities between some Hodge numbers of some irregular varieties. In particular, we obtain sharp lower bounds for the Hodge numbers of smooth subvarieties of Abelian varieties, as well as some improvements of results of Lazarsfeld and Popa and Lombardi concerning threefolds and fourfolds.

Counting Lines on Quartic Surfaces

We prove the sharp bound of at most 64 lines on complex projective quartic surfaces (resp. affine quartics) that are not ruled by lines. We study configurations of lines on certain non-K3 surfaces of degree four and give various examples of singular quartics with many lines.

On deformations of curves supported on rigid divisors

Motivated by a conjecture of Xiao, we study supporting divisors of fibred surfaces. On the one hand, after developing a formalism to treat one-dimensional families of varieties of any dimension, we give a structure theorem for fibred surfaces supported on relatively rigid divisors. On the other hand, we study how to produce supporting divisors by constructing a global adjoint map for a fibration over a curve (generalizing the infinitesimal constructions of Collino, Pirola, Rizzi and Zucconi).

A generalization of the Castelnuovo-de Franchis inequality

We give a lower bound on the Hodge number h^{2,0}(X), where X is an irregular compact Kähler (or smooth complex projective) variety, in terms of the minimal rank of an element in the kernel of the wedge product map ψ_2: Λ^2 H^0(X,Ω_X^1) -> H^0(X,Ω_X^2). As a consequence, we obtain a generalization to higher dimensions of the Castelnuovo-de Franchis inequality for surfaces, improving some results of Lazarsfeld and Popa and Lombardi for threefolds and fourfolds.
