Entropy and ω-limit sets on invariant graphs for a class of planar piecewise linear maps

We consider the family of piecewise linear maps $F(x,y)=\left(|x| - y + a, x - |y| + b\right),$ where $(a,b)\in \mathbb{R}^2$. In previous work, we identified that certain maps of this class possess one-dimensional invariant sets, planar graphs, that capture the global dynamics of the system. Within these graphs, chaotic dynamics emerge for certain parameter values, leading to an intermediate dynamical regime between regular behavior and full-plane chaos. In the present study, we revisit this family and analyze in detail the topological entropy as a function of a bifurcation parameter, finding that transitions from positive to zero entropy are continuous for certain parameter values and discontinuous for others. We also provide a methodology for determining arbitrarily sharp rational bounds for the bifurcation values at which this transition occurs. Finally, motivated by the limitations of numerical simulations in detecting the complex dynamics within these graphs, we prove that for some parameter values, there exists a full-measure set in these graphs where orbits converge to at most three omega-limit sets, which, when the parameter values are rational, correspond to periodic orbits.

Dynamics of Kahan-Hirota-Kimura maps with rational invariant fibrations

We present a simple method to study the dynamics of planar Kahan-Hirota-Kimura (KHK) maps preserving rational fibrations. Using this approach, we show that integrable KHK maps may exhibit complex dynamics, even when obtained from vector fields with trivial behavior. As an application, we study the KHK map associated with a quadratic planar vector field with an isochronous center. This map preserves the original first integral and admits the vector field as a Lie symmetry. Moreover, for a dense set of values of the integration step, it is globally periodic and exhibits all possible periods except 2. We also provide evidence of non-integrability for KHK maps associated with other quadratic vector fields possessing isochronous centers. To overcome this issue, we introduce the notion of pseudo-KHK maps, as alternative integrable discretizations for vector fields with isochronous centers. These maps are constructed to preserve the first integrals of the original vector field and to ensure that the vector field itself is a Lie symmetry of the map. The construction can be extended to isochronous centers of degree greater than two.

Monodromic singularities of Brunella-Miari vector fields with two edges in the Newton diagram

This work focuses on the study of monodromic singularities in planar analytic families of vector fields whose Newton diagram consists of exactly two edges. We begin by analyzing the desingularization scheme of a minimal model of polynomial vector fields, denoted by ${X}$, which includes only the monomials corresponding to the vertices of the Newton diagram. We then extend this minimal model to the so-called Brunella-Miari vector fields ${X} \subset {X}^{[1]}$, incorporating all monomials associated with points lying on the edges of the Newton diagram. As a second extension, we consider vector fields ${X}^{[1]} \subset {X}^{[2]}$ that include higher-order terms corresponding to points located above the polygonal line in the Newton diagram. The key point of our approach is to preserve the desingularization geometry at each extension step. We provide explicit desingularization procedures, which enable the computation of the linear part of the return map $Π$ in cases where the desingularized singularity is associated with a hyperbolic polycycle. Several nontrivial examples are included to illustrate the method.

On two families of iterative methods without memory

We study two natural families of methods of order $n\ge 2$ that are useful for solving numerically one variable equations $f(x)=0.$ The first family consists on the methods that depend on $x,f(x)$ and its successive derivatives up to $f^{(n-1)}(x)$ and the second family comprises methods that depend on $x,g(x)$ until $g^{\circ n}(x),$ where $g^{\circ m}(x)=g(g^{\circ (m-1)}(x))$ and $g(x)=f(x)+x$. The first family includes the well-known Newton, Chebyshev, and Halley methods, while the second one contains the Steffensen method. Although the results for the first type of methods are well known and classical, we provide new, simple, detailed, and self-contained proofs.

Kahan-Hirota-Kimura maps preserving original cubic hamiltonians

We study the class of cubic Hamiltonian vector fields whose associated Kahan-Hirota-Kimura (KHK) maps preserve the original Hamiltonian function. Our analysis focuses on these fields in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and $\mathbb{R}^4$, extending to a family of fields in $\mathbb{R}^6$. Additionally, we investigate various properties of these fields, including the existence of additional first integrals of a specific type, their role as Lie symmetries of the corresponding KHK map, and the symplecticity of these maps.

Invariant graphs and dynamics of a family of continuous piecewise linear planar maps

We consider the family of piecewise linear maps $$F_{a,b}(x,y)=\left(|x| - y + a, x - |y| + b\right),$$ where $(a,b)\in \mathbb{R}^2$. This family belongs to a wider one that has deserved some interest in the recent years as it provides a framework for generalized Lozi-type maps. Among our results, we prove that for $a\ge 0$ all the orbits are eventually periodic and moreover that there are at most three different periodic behaviors formed by at most seven points. For $a<0$ we prove that for each $b\in\mathbb{R}$ there exists a compact graph $Γ,$ which is invariant under the map $F$, such that for each $(x,y)\in \mathbb{R}^2$ there exists $n\in\mathbb{N}$ (that may depend on $x$) such that $F_{a,b}^n(x,y)\in Γ.$ We give explicitly all these invariant graphs and we characterize the dynamics of the map restricted to the corresponding graph for all $(a,b)\in\mathbb{R}^2$ obtaining, among other results, a full characterization of when $F_{a,b}|_Γ$ has positive or zero entropy.

On some rational piecewise linear rotations

We study the dynamics of the piecewise planar rotations $F_λ(z)=λ(z-H(z)), $ with $z\in\C$, $H(z)=1$ if $\mathrm{Im}(z)\ge0,$ $H(z)=-1$ if $\mathrm{Im}(z)<0,$ and $λ=\mathrm{e}^{i α} \in\C$, being $α$ a rational multiple of $π$. Our main results establish the dynamics in the so called regular set, which is the complementary of the closure of the set formed by the preimages of the discontinuity line. We prove that any connected component of this set is open, bounded and periodic under the action of $F_λ$, with a period $\ell,$ that depends on the connected component. Furthermore, $F_λ^\ell $ restricted to each component acts as a rotation with a period which also depends on the connected component. As a consequence, any point in the regular set is periodic. Among other results, we also prove that for any connected component of the regular set, its boundary is a convex polygon with certain maximum number of sides.

On the accumulation points of non-periodic orbits of a difference equation of fourth order

In this paper, we are interested in analyzing the dynamics of the fourth-order difference equation $x_{n+4} = \max\{x_{n+3},x_{n+2},x_{n+1},0\}-x_n$, with arbitrary real initial conditions. We fully determine the accumulation point sets of the non-periodic solutions that, in fact, are configured as proper compact intervals of the real line. This study complements the previous knowledge of the dynamics of the difference equation already achieved in [M. Csörnyei, M. Laczkovich, Monatsh. Math. 132 (2001), 215-236] and [A. Linero Bas, D. Nieves Roldán, J. Difference Equ. Appl. 27 (2021), no. 11, 1608-1645].

Pointwise periodic maps with quantized first integrals

We describe the global dynamics of some pointwise periodic piecewise linear maps in the plane that exhibit interesting dynamic features. For each of these maps we find a first integral. For these integrals the set of values are discrete, thus quantized. Furthermore, the level sets are bounded sets whose interior is formed by a finite number of open tiles of certain regular or uniform tessellations. The action of the maps on each invariant set of tiles is described geometrically.

Persistence of periodic traveling waves and Abelian integrals

It is well known that the existence of traveling wave solutions (TWS) for many partial differential equations (PDE) is a consequence of the fact that an associated planar ordinary differential equation (ODE) has certain types of solutions defined for all time. In this paper we address the problem of persistence of TWS of a given PDE under small perturbations. Our main results deal with the situation where the associated ODE has a center and, as a consequence, the original PDE has a continuum of periodic traveling wave solutions. We prove that the TWS that persist are controlled by the zeroes of some Abelian integrals. We apply our results to several famous PDE, like the Ostrovsky, Klein-Gordon, sine-Gordon, Korteweg-de Vries, Rosenau-Hyman, Camassa-Holm, and Boussinesq equations.

Stability index of linear random dynamical systems

Given a homogeneous linear discrete or continuous dynamical system, its stability index is given by the dimension of the stable manifold of the zero solution. In particular, for the $n$ dimensional case, the zero solution is globally asymptotically stable if and only if this stability index is $n.$ Fixed $n,$ let $X$ be the random variable that assigns to each linear random dynamical system its stability index, and let $p_k$ with $k=0,1,\ldots,n,$ denote the probabilities that $P(X=k)$. In this paper we obtain either the exact values $p_k,$ or their estimations by combining the Monte Carlo method with a least square approach that uses some affine relations among the values $p_k,k=0,1,\ldots,n.$ The particular case of $n$-order homogeneous linear random differential or difference equations is also studied in detail.

Phase portraits of random planar homogeneous vector fields

We study the phase portraits with positive probability of random planar homogeneous vector fields of degree n. In particular, for n=1,2,3, we give a complete solution of the problem and, moreover, either we give the exact value of each probability or we estimate it by using the Monte Carlo method. It is remarkable that all but two of these phase portraits are characterized by their index at the origin and by their number of invariant straight lines through it.

A dynamic Parrondo's paradox for continuous seasonal systems

We show that planar continuous alternating systems, which can be used to model systems with seasonality, can exhibit a type of Parrondo's dynamic paradox, in which the stability of an equilibrium, common to all seasons is reversed for the global seasonal system.

Minor loops of the Dahl and LuGre models

Hysteresis is a special type of behavior encountered in physical systems: in a hysteretic system, when the input is periodic and varies slowly, the steady-state part of the output-versus-input graph becomes a loop called hysteresis loop. In the presence of perturbed inputs, this hysteresis loop presents small lobes called minor loops that are located inside a larger curve called major loop. The study of minor loops is being increasingly popular since it leads to a quantification of the loss of energy. The aim of the present paper is to give an explicit analytic expression of the minor loops of the LuGre and the Dahl models of dynamic dry friction.

Periodic orbits of discrete and continuous dynamical systems via Poincaré-Miranda theorem

We present a systematic methodology to determine and locate analytically isolated periodic points of discrete and continuous dynamical systems with algebraic nature. We apply this method to a wide range of examples, including a one-parameter family of counterexamples to the discrete Markus-Yamabe conjecture (La Salle conjecture); the study of the low periods of a Lotka-Volterra-type map; the existence of three limit cycles for a piece-wise linear planar vector field; a new counterexample of Kouchnirenko's conjecture; and an alternative proof of the existence of a class of symmetric central configuration of the $(1+4)$-body problem.

A route to chaos in the Boros-Moll map

The Boros-Moll map appears as a subsystem of a Landen transformation associated to certain rational integrals and its dynamics is related to the convergence of them. In the paper, we study the dynamics of a one-parameter family of maps which unfolds the Boros-Moll one, showing that the existence of an unbounded invariant chaotic region in the Boros-Moll map is a peculiar feature within the family. We relate this singularity with a specific property of the critical lines that occurs only for this special case. In particular, we explain how the unbounded chaotic region in the Boros-Moll map appears. Special attention is devoted to explain the main contact/homoclinic bifurcations that occur in the family. We also report some other bifurcation phenomena that appear in the considered unfolding.

Periodic points of a Landen transformation

We prove the existence of 3-periodic orbits in a dynamical system associated to a Landen transformation previously studied by Boros, Chamberland and Moll, disproving a conjecture on the dynamics of this planar map introduced by the latter author. To this end we present a systematic methodology to determine and locate analytically isolated periodic points of algebraic maps. This approach can be useful to study other discrete dynamical systems with algebraic nature. Complementary results on the dynamics of the map associated with the Landen transformation are also presented.

Bifurcation of 2-periodic orbits from non-hyperbolic fixed points

We introduce the concept of 2-cyclicity for families of one-dimensional maps with a non-hyperbolic fixed point by analogy to the cyclicity for families of planar vector fields with a weak focus. This new concept is useful in order to study the number of 2-periodic orbits that can bifurcate from the fixed point. As an application we study the 2-cyclicity of some natural families of polynomial maps.
