Sensitivity to top-quark couplings in diboson production at lepton colliders

We study the next-to-leading order electroweak corrections to $e^+e^- \rightarrow W^+W^-$ from dimension-six two-fermion top-quark operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory. We compute analytical and numerical results for future electron-positron colliders, focusing on the proposed LEP3 and FCC-ee that will operate at centre-of-mass energies below the $t \bar{t}$ production threshold. We compare the indirect sensitivity arising from virtual corrections to $WW$ production to that from $ZH$ production, and to the current constraints from LEP and LHC data. We show that NLO corrections can provide competitive sensitivity to these operators. This work represents a first step towards the systematic computation of electroweak corrections to $W$-pair production at lepton colliders in the SMEFT, whose impact can then be properly assessed in global analyses.

Sensitivity Analysis of the Top-Quark Sector

We study the sensitivity of current and future collider observables to top-quark SMEFT operators through a one-operator-at-a-time analysis. Using data from the Tevatron, LEP, and LHC Run~2, as well as projections for the HL-LHC and future lepton colliders, we identify the measurements that provide the strongest individual constraints. This approach clarifies the role of specific observables in the top-quark SMEFT program and highlights the significant improvement in sensitivity expected at future facilities.

Future collider constraints on top-quark operators

In this paper we present updated constraints on the top-quark sector of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory using data available from Tevatron, LEP and the LHC. Bounds are obtained for the Wilson coefficients from a global fit including the relevant two-fermion operators, four-quark operators and two-quark two-lepton operators. We compare the current bounds with the prospects for the high luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider and future lepton colliders.

Sensitivity to $\mathcal{CP}$-violating effective couplings in the top-Higgs sector

The observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe requires new sources of charge-parity ($\mathcal{CP}$) violation beyond those in the Standard Model. In this work, we investigate $\mathcal{CP}$-violating effects in the top-Higgs sector using the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) framework. Focusing on top-pair production in association with a Higgs boson and single top-Higgs associated production at the LHC, we study $\mathcal{CP}$ violation in the top-Higgs Yukawa coupling and other Higgs and top interactions entering these processes. By analysing $\mathcal{CP}$-sensitive differential observables and asymmetries, we provide direct constraints on $\mathcal{CP}$-violating interactions in the top-Higgs sector. Our analysis demonstrates how combining $t\bar{t}h$ and $thj$ production can disentangle the real and imaginary components of the top-Yukawa coupling, offering valuable insights into potential sources of $\mathcal{CP}$ violation. The sensitivity of these observables to SMEFT operators provides model-independent constraints on the parameter space, advancing the search for new physics in the top-Higgs sector.

Light scalars within the $\mathcal{CP}$-conserving Aligned-two-Higgs-doublet model

In this article we study the possibility that neutral and charged scalars lighter than the 125 GeV Higgs boson might exist within the framework of the $\mathcal{CP}$-conserving Aligned-two-Higgs-doublet model. Depending on which new scalar (scalars) is (are) light, seven different scenarios may be considered. Using the open-source code HEPfit, which relies on Bayesian statistics, we perform global fits for all seven light-mass scenarios. The constraints arising from vacuum stability, perturbativity, electroweak precision observables, flavour observables, Higgs signal strengths, and direct-detection results at the LEP and the LHC are taken into account. Reinterpreted data from slepton searches are considered too. It turns out that the seven scenarios contain sizeable regions of their parameter space compatible with all current data. Although not included in the global fits, the possible implications of $(g-2)_μ$ are also addressed.

Bayesian analyses of the A2HDM with low-mass scalars

Two-Higgs-doublet models come with an augmented parameter space which allows them to possibly solve some of the shortcomings of the Standard Model, and opens the window to a plethora of new phenomena to be discovered. The introduction of scalar-mediated tree-level flavour-changing neutral currents may be tackled with the imposition of extra symmetries on the model or, alternatively, by demanding a strict proportionality between the flavour-changing couplings and fermion mass matrices. The latter is the very idea behind the Aligned-Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (A2HDM). The coefficients that govern such proportionality are, in general, complex and, therefore, possible new sources of CP violation, a calling card of this class of models. We present here the results of new state-of-the-art analyses of the A2HDM where, in particular, we ascertain whether current data allows the A2HDM to accommodate extra scalars lighter than the 125 GeV Higgs boson. To this effect, we make use of theoretical constraints, bounds from Higgs searches at the LHC and LEP, electroweak precision observables, and a set of flavour observables, all globally combined within HEPfit, a software with a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach to statistical inference. Focusing on the light-pseudoscalar scenario, we find a region of parameter space compatible with all the constraints we impose.

Computing Tools for Effective Field Theories

In recent years, theoretical and phenomenological studies with effective field theories have become a trending and prolific line of research in the field of high-energy physics. In order to discuss present and future prospects concerning automated tools in this field, the SMEFT-Tools 2022 workshop was held at the University of Zurich from 14th-16th September 2022. The current document collects and summarizes the content of this workshop.

Updated global fit of the aligned two-Higgs-doublet model with heavy scalars

An updated global fit on the parameter-space of the Aligned Two-Higgs-Doublet model has been performed with the help of the open-source package HEPfit, assuming the Standard-Model Higgs to be the lightest scalar. No new sources of CP violation, other than the phase in the CKM matrix of the Standard Model, have been considered. A similar global fit was previously performed in Ref. [JHEP 05 (2021) 005] with a slightly different set of parameters. Our updated fit incorporates improved analyses of the theoretical constraints required for perturbative unitarity and boundedness of the scalar potential from below, additional flavour observables and updated data on direct searches of heavy scalars at the LHC, Higgs signal strengths and electroweak precision observables. Although not included in the main fit, the implications of the CDF measurement of the $W^\pm$ mass are also discussed.

Global fit of the Aligned Two-Higgs-Doublet Model

Though the Standard Model (SM) provides a very elegant description of the interactions among fundamental particles, there are ample evidences suggesting that new physics is needed. In particular, extending the scalar sector has enough motivation from vacuum stability, electroweak phase transition and various other sectors. Among different such extensions, the two-Higgs-doublet model (THDM) is the simplest one that preserves the electroweak $ρ$ parameter. Flavour-changing neutral currents (FCNC) are usually avoided by implementing additional discrete symmetries, but this type of models are subject to severe phenomenological constraints. In the more general framework of the aligned THDM (ATHDM) tree-level FCNCs are avoided by choosing the same flavour structure for the Yukawa couplings of the two scalar doublets, which results in weaker phenomenological constraints. Here, we present a global fit of the ATHDM, using the package HEPfit that performs a bayesian analysis on the parameter-space of this model with the help of stability and perturbativity bounds, experimental data for various flavour and electroweak precision observables, and constraints from Higgs searches at the LHC. This global fit has been performed assuming that all additional scalars are heavier than the SM Higgs and that there are no extra sources of CP violation beyond the CKM phase.

W-boson mass and electric dipole moments from colour-octet scalars

New coloured scalars in the Manohar-Wise model give sizeable contributions to the Electric Dipole Moment (EDM) of the neutron through one-loop and two-loop diagrams, computed in Reference [1]. Contributions from neutral scalars cancel out for degenerate values of the masses, whose difference is related to the oblique parameters $S$ and $T$. The Manohar-Wise model is able to explain the recent value of the $W$-boson mass published by the CDF collaboration. We show, however, that the case of total degeneracy of masses is strongly disfavoured in this model, whose parameter space is substantially reduced when considering also unitarity bounds.

Snowmass White Paper: prospects for the measurement of top-quark couplings

In this contribution to the 2021 Snowmass community planning exercise that informs the American strategy for particle physics, we present the prospects for measurements of the top-quark couplings at future colliders. Projections are presented for the high luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider and a future Higgs/electroweak/top factory electron-positron collider. Results are presented for the expected bounds on Wilson coefficients of the relevant SMEFT operators from a global fit to the top physics sector.

Electric dipole moments from colour-octet scalars

We present the contributions to electric dipole moments (EDMs) induced by the Yukawa couplings of an additional electroweak doublet of colour-octet scalars. The full set of one-loop diagrams and the enhanced higher-order effects from Barr-Zee diagrams are computed for the quark (chromo-)EDM, along with the two-loop contributions to the Weinberg operator. Using the stringent experimental upper limits on the neutron EDM, constraints on the parameter space of this model are derived.

The top quark electro-weak couplings after LHC Run 2

Recent measurements at the Large Hadron Collider allow for a robust and precise characterisation of the electro-weak interactions of the top quark. We present the results of a global analysis at next-to-leading order precision including LHC, LEP/SLD and Tevatron data in the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory. We include a careful analysis of the impact of correlations among measurements, as well as of the uncertainties in the Effective Field Theory setup itself. We find remarkably robust global fit results, with central values in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction, and 95% probability bounds on Wilson coefficients that range from $\pm$ 0.35 to $\pm$ 8 TeV$^{-2}$. This result represents a considerable improvement over previous studies, thanks to the addition of differential cross-section measurements in associated production processes of top quarks and neutral gauge bosons.

Constraints on coloured scalars from global fits

We consider a simple extension of the electroweak theory, incorporating one $SU(2)_L$ doublet of colour-octet scalars with Yukawa couplings satisfying the principle of minimal flavour violation. Using the HEPfit package, we perform a global fit to the available data, including all relevant theoretical constraints, and extract the current bounds on the model parameters. Coloured scalars with masses below 1.05 TeV are already excluded, provided they are not fermiophobic. The mass splittings among the different (charged and CP-even and CP-odd neutral) scalars are restricted to be smaller than 20 GeV. Moreover, for scalar masses smaller than 1.5 TeV, the Yukawa coupling of the coloured scalar multiplet to the top quark cannot exceed the one of the SM Higgs doublet by more than 80%. These conclusions are quite generic and apply in more general frameworks (without fine tunings). The theoretical requirements of perturbative unitarity and vacuum stability enforce relevant constraints on the quartic scalar potential parameters that are not yet experimentally tested.

The electro-weak couplings of the top and bottom quarks -- global fit and future prospects

We evaluate the implications of LHC and LEP/SLC measurements for the electro-weak couplings of the top and bottom quarks. We derive global bounds on the Wilson coefficients of ten two-fermion operators in an effective field theory description. The combination of hadron collider data with $Z$-pole measurements is found to yield tight limits on the operator coefficients that modify the left-handed couplings of the bottom and top quark to the $Z$ boson. We also present projections for the high-luminosity phase of the LHC and for future electron-positron colliders. The bounds on the operator coefficients are expected to improve substantially during the remaining LHC programme, by factors of $1$ to $5$ if systematic uncertainties are scaled as statistical ones. The operation of an $e^+e^-$ collider at a center-of-mass energy above the top-quark pair production threshold is expected to further improve the bounds by one to two orders of magnitude. The combination of measurements in $pp$ and $e^+e^-$ collisions allows for a percent-level determination of the top-quark Yukawa coupling, that is robust in a global fit.

LHC bounds on coloured scalars

We analyze the constraints on coloured scalar bosons imposed by the current LHC data at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. Specifically, we consider an additional electroweak doublet of colour-octet scalars, satisfying the principle of Minimal Flavour Violation in order to fulfill the stringent experimental limits on flavour-changing neutral currents. We demonstrate that coloured scalars with masses below 800 GeV are already excluded, provided they are not fermiophobic.
