Symmetry-Guided Design of Quantum Couplers in Dirac materials: AA-Bilayer Graphene Coupler

We develop a theoretical framework for designing quantum couplers based on Dirac materials that can modulate the polarization of transmitted quasiparticles without significantly perturbing their propagation. We analyze in detail the conditions required for perfect transmission (Klein tunneling) together with controlled polarization transformation of the incoming states. We then discuss an explicit model of a quantum coupler composed of AA-stacked bilayer graphene nanoribbons with armchair edges and a localized interlayer interaction. Perfect transmission through the desired polarization channels is examined for both narrow and wide couplers. We show that the transmission of polarized states can be finely tuned by external fields.

Topical Review: The rise of Klein tunneling in low-dimensional materials and superlattices

We review recent advances in Klein and anti-Klein tunneling in one- and two-dimensional materials. Using a general tight-binding framework applied to multiple periodic systems, we establish the criteria for the emergence of Klein tunneling based on the conservation of an effective reduced pseudospin. The inclusion of higher-order terms in the wave vector leads to nontrivial matching conditions for wave scattering at interfaces. We further examine the emergence of multiple types of Klein tunneling in two-dimensional materials beyond graphene, including phosphorene and borophene, as well as in one-dimensional systems such as Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattices. Finally, we discuss how these tunneling phenomena can be tested in both synthesized and artificial lattices, including elastic metamaterials, optical, photonic, phononic, and superconducting platforms, demonstrating the universality of Klein tunneling across different wave natures and length scales.

Dual energy-differentiated topological transition in artificial red phosphorus chains

We investigate the spectral and transport properties of an atomic chain of red phosphorus. We reveal the separation of flat-band states from the rest of the system and calculate its energy bands analytically. The topological properties of the system are established through the evaluation of the Berry (Zak) phase of the energy bands, revealing nontrivial topology. The Berry phase depends on the relative strength of the hopping parameters and exhibits dual energy-dependent topological phase transitions. Remarkably, the emergence of inert band edges provides a direct spectral signature of these transitions, acting as energy-resolved indicators of the redistribution of topological charge between bands. The existence of the associated edge states is proved numerically for finite lattices. The theoretical predictions, particularly the band structure and the existence of edge states, are further confirmed by numerical simulations of red phosphorus through a phononic lattice in the form of a highly structured aluminum plate.

SUSY design of smooth quantum rings in graphene

We develop a suitable technique to design zero-energy graphene models with radial electrostatic potentials capable of achieving electrostatic confinement. Using the Gaussian law for electrostatics, we derive the charge density associated with these potentials that correspond to concentric electrostatic rings. The technique is based on a modified supersymmetric transformation that allows to design time-reversal invariant interaction terms and to find the corresponding zero-energy bound states in analytical form. Consequently, solutions with the same probability density but different angular momentum are characterized by circular probability currents flowing in opposite directions. The energies of the systems defined in two Dirac valleys (one-valley) have a fourfold (twofold) degeneracy. As an example of the technique, we construct a ring-decorated Coulomb potential that exhibits zero energy collapse and bound states together.

Lorentzian quantum wells in graphene: the role of shape invariance in zero-energy states trapping

Confining Dirac fermions in graphene by electrostatic fields is a challenging task. Electric quantum dots created by a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip can trap zero-energy quasi-particles. The Lorentzian quantum well provides a faithful, exactly solvable, approximation to such a potential, hosting zero-energy bound states for certain values of the coupling constant. We show that in this critical configuration, the system can be related to the free particle model by means of a supersymmetric transformation. The revealed shape invariance of the model greatly simplifies the calculation of the zero modes and naturally explains the degeneracy of the zero energy.

Lieb lattices and pseudospin-1 dynamics under barrier- and well-like electrostatic interactions

This work considers the confining and scattering phenomena of electrons in a Lieb lattice subjected to the influence of a rectangular electrostatic barrier. In this setup, hopping amplitudes between nearest neighbors in orthogonal directions are considered different, and the next-nearest neighbor interaction describes spin-orbit coupling. This makes it possible to confine electrons and generate bound states, the exact number of which is exactly determined for null parallel momentum to the barrier. In such a case, it is proved that one even and one odd bound state is always generated, and the number of bound states increases for non-null and increasing values of the parallel momentum. That is, bound states carry current. In the scattering regime, the exact values of energy are determined where the resonant tunneling occurs. The existence of perfect tunneling energy in the form of super-Klein tunneling is proved to exist regardless of the bang gap opening. Finally, it is shown that perfect reflection appears when solutions are coupled to the intermediate flat-band solution.

Coupled system of Dirac fermions with different Fermi velocities via composites of SUSY operators

We use the framework of supersymmetric transformations in the construction of coupled systems of Dirac fermions. Its energy operator is a composite of the generators of the associated superalgebra, and the two coupled Dirac fermions acquire different Fermi velocities. We discuss in detail the peculiar spectral properties of the new system. The emergent phenomena like level crossing or generation of bound states in the continuum (BICs) are illustrated in two explicit examples.

Reduction scheme for coupled Dirac systems

We analyze a class of coupled quantum systems whose dynamics can be understood via two uncoupled, lower-dimensional quantum settings with auxiliary interactions. The general reduction scheme, based on algebraic properties of the potential term, is discussed in detail for two-dimensional Dirac Hamiltonian. We discuss its possible application in description of Dirac fermions in graphene or bilayer graphene in presence of distortion scattering or spin-orbit interaction. We illustrate the general results on the explicit examples where the involved interactions are non-uniform in space and time.

Confinement in bilayer graphene via intra- and inter-layer interactions

We consider confinement of Dirac fermions in $AB$-stacked bilayer graphene by inhomogeneous on-site interactions, (pseudo-)magnetic field or inter-layer interaction. Working within the framework of four-band approximation, we focus on the systems where the stationary equation is reducible into two stationary equations with $2\times2$ Dirac-type Hamiltonians and auxiliary interactions. We show that it is possible to find localized states by solving an effective Schrödinger equation with energy-dependent potential. We consider several scenarios where bilayer graphene is subject to inhomogneous (pseudo-)magnetic field, on-site interactions or inter-layer coupling. In explicit examples, we provide analytical solutions for the states localized by local fluctuations or periodicity defects of the interactions.

Qualitative analysis of magnetic waveguides for two-dimensional Dirac fermions

We focus on the confinement of two-dimensional Dirac fermions within the waveguides created by realistic magnetic fields. Understanding of their band structure is of our main concern. We provide easily applicable criteria, mostly depending only on the asymptotic behavior of the magnetic field, that can guarantee existence or absence of the energy bands and provide valuable insight into the systems where analytical solution is impossible. The general results are employed in specific systems where the waveguide is created by the magnetic field of a set of electric wires or magnetized strips.

Spontaneous twisting and shrinking of carbon nanotubes

Deformations of single-wall carbon nanotubes are investigated within the tight-binding model with deformation-dependent hopping energies. We show that the nanotubes tend to twist and shrink spontaneously at zero temperature. The explicit values of the deformation parameters are computed for a wide range of nanotubes with varying diameter and chirality. The changes of the spectral gap associated with the spontaneous deformation are shown to depend on the chirality of the nanotubes.
