Optimal Sobolev embeddings for the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator

A comprehensive analysis of Sobolev-type inequalities for the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator in the Gauss space is offered. A unified approach is proposed, providing one with criteria for their validity in the class of rearrangement-invariant function norms. Optimal target and domain norms in the relevant inequalities are characterized via a reduction principle to one-dimensional inequalities for a Calderón type integral operator patterned on the Gaussian isoperimetric function. Consequently, the best possible norms in a variety of specific families of spaces, including Lebesgue, Lorentz, Lorentz-Zygmund, Orlicz and Marcinkiewicz spaces, are detected. The reduction principle hinges on a preliminary discussion of the existence and uniqueness of generalized solutions to equations, in the Gauss space, for the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator, with a just integrable right-hand side. A decisive role is also played by a pointwise estimate, in rearrangement form, for these solutions.

Optimality problems in Orlicz spaces

In mathematical modelling, the data and solutions are represented as measurable functions and their quality is oftentimes captured by the membership to a certain function space. One of the core questions for an analysis of a model is the mutual relationship between the data and solution quality. The optimality of the obtained results deserves a special focus. It requires a careful choice of families of function spaces balancing between their expressivity, i.e. the ability to capture fine properties of the model, and their accessibility, i.e. its technical difficulty for practical use. This paper presents a unified and general approach to optimality problems in Orlicz spaces. Orlicz spaces are parametrized by a single convex function and neatly balance the expressivity and accessibility. We prove a general principle that yields an easily verifiable necessary and sufficient condition for the existence or the non-existence of an optimal Orlicz space in various tasks. We demonstrate its use in specific problems, including the continuity of Sobolev embeddings and boundedness of integral operators such as the Hardy--Littlewood maximal operator and the Laplace transform.

On-the-fly Adaptation of Patrolling Strategies in Changing Environments

We consider the problem of efficient patrolling strategy adaptation in a changing environment where the topology of Defender's moves and the importance of guarded targets change unpredictably. The Defender must instantly switch to a new strategy optimized for the new environment, not disrupting the ongoing patrolling task, and the new strategy must be computed promptly under all circumstances. Since strategy switching may cause unintended security risks compromising the achieved protection, our solution includes mechanisms for detecting and mitigating this problem. The efficiency of our framework is evaluated experimentally.

General Optimization Framework for Recurrent Reachability Objectives

We consider the mobile robot path planning problem for a class of recurrent reachability objectives. These objectives are parameterized by the expected time needed to visit one position from another, the expected square of this time, and also the frequency of moves between two neighboring locations. We design an efficient strategy synthesis algorithm for recurrent reachability objectives and demonstrate its functionality on non-trivial instances.

CombOptNet: Fit the Right NP-Hard Problem by Learning Integer Programming Constraints

Bridging logical and algorithmic reasoning with modern machine learning techniques is a fundamental challenge with potentially transformative impact. On the algorithmic side, many NP-hard problems can be expressed as integer programs, in which the constraints play the role of their "combinatorial specification." In this work, we aim to integrate integer programming solvers into neural network architectures as layers capable of learning both the cost terms and the constraints. The resulting end-to-end trainable architectures jointly extract features from raw data and solve a suitable (learned) combinatorial problem with state-of-the-art integer programming solvers. We demonstrate the potential of such layers with an extensive performance analysis on synthetic data and with a demonstration on a competitive computer vision keypoint matching benchmark.

Minimizing Expected Intrusion Detection Time in Adversarial Patrolling

In adversarial patrolling games, a mobile Defender strives to discover intrusions at vulnerable targets initiated by an Attacker. The Attacker's utility is traditionally defined as the probability of completing an attack, possibly weighted by target costs. However, in many real-world scenarios, the actual damage caused by the Attacker depends on the \emph{time} elapsed since the attack's initiation to its detection. We introduce a formal model for such scenarios, and we show that the Defender always has an \emph{optimal} strategy achieving maximal protection. We also prove that \emph{finite-memory} Defender's strategies are sufficient for achieving protection arbitrarily close to the optimum. Then, we design an efficient \emph{strategy synthesis} algorithm based on differentiable programming and gradient descent.

Sharp exponential inequalities for the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator

The optimal constants in a class of exponential type inequalities for the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator in the Gauss space are detected. The existence of extremal functions in the relevant inequalities is also established. Our results disclose analogies and dissimilarities in comparison with Adams' inequality for the Laplace operator, a companion of our inequalities in the Euclidean space.

Regstar: Efficient Strategy Synthesis for Adversarial Patrolling Games

We design a new efficient strategy synthesis method applicable to adversarial patrolling problems on graphs with arbitrary-length edges and possibly imperfect intrusion detection. The core ingredient is an efficient algorithm for computing the value and the gradient of a function assigning to every strategy its "protection" achieved. This allows for designing an efficient strategy improvement algorithm by differentiable programming and optimization techniques. Our method is the first one applicable to real-world patrolling graphs of reasonable sizes. It outperforms the state-of-the-art strategy synthesis algorithm by a margin.

Maximal non-compactness of Sobolev embeddings

It has been known that sharp Sobolev embeddings into weak Lebesgue spaces are non-compact but the question of whether the measure of non-compactness of such an embedding equals to its operator norm constituted a well-known open problem. The existing theory suggested an argument that would possibly solve the problem should the target norms be disjointly superadditive, but the question of disjoint superadditivity of spaces $L^{p,\infty}$ has been open, too. In this paper, we solve both these problems. We first show that weak Lebesgue spaces are never disjointly superadditive, so the suggested technique is ruled out. But then we show that, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, the measure of non-compactness of a sharp Sobolev embedding coincides with the embedding norm nevertheless, at least as long as $p<\infty$. Finally, we show that if the target space is $L^{\infty}$ (which formally is also a weak Lebesgue space with $p=\infty$), then the things are essentially different. To give a comprehensive answer including this case, too, we develop a new method based on a rather unexpected combinatorial argument and prove thereby a general principle, whose special case implies that the measure of non-compactness, in this case, is strictly less than its norm. We develop a technique that enables us to evaluate this measure of non-compactness exactly.

On the existence of extremals for Moser type inequalities in Gauss space

The existence of an extremal in an exponential Sobolev type inequality, with optimal constant, in Gauss space is established. A key step in the proof is an augmented version of the relevant inequality, which, by contrast, fails for a parallel classical inequality by Moser in the Euclidean space.

Deep Graph Matching via Blackbox Differentiation of Combinatorial Solvers

Building on recent progress at the intersection of combinatorial optimization and deep learning, we propose an end-to-end trainable architecture for deep graph matching that contains unmodified combinatorial solvers. Using the presence of heavily optimized combinatorial solvers together with some improvements in architecture design, we advance state-of-the-art on deep graph matching benchmarks for keypoint correspondence. In addition, we highlight the conceptual advantages of incorporating solvers into deep learning architectures, such as the possibility of post-processing with a strong multi-graph matching solver or the indifference to changes in the training setting. Finally, we propose two new challenging experimental setups. The code is available at https://github.com/martius-lab/blackbox-deep-graph-matching

Optimizing Rank-based Metrics with Blackbox Differentiation

Rank-based metrics are some of the most widely used criteria for performance evaluation of computer vision models. Despite years of effort, direct optimization for these metrics remains a challenge due to their non-differentiable and non-decomposable nature. We present an efficient, theoretically sound, and general method for differentiating rank-based metrics with mini-batch gradient descent. In addition, we address optimization instability and sparsity of the supervision signal that both arise from using rank-based metrics as optimization targets. Resulting losses based on recall and Average Precision are applied to image retrieval and object detection tasks. We obtain performance that is competitive with state-of-the-art on standard image retrieval datasets and consistently improve performance of near state-of-the-art object detectors. Differentiation of Blackbox Combinatorial Solvers

Achieving fusion of deep learning with combinatorial algorithms promises transformative changes to artificial intelligence. One possible approach is to introduce combinatorial building blocks into neural networks. Such end-to-end architectures have the potential to tackle combinatorial problems on raw input data such as ensuring global consistency in multi-object tracking or route planning on maps in robotics. In this work, we present a method that implements an efficient backward pass through blackbox implementations of combinatorial solvers with linear objective functions. We provide both theoretical and experimental backing. In particular, we incorporate the Gurobi MIP solver, Blossom V algorithm, and Dijkstra's algorithm into architectures that extract suitable features from raw inputs for the traveling salesman problem, the min-cost perfect matching problem and the shortest path problem. The code is available at https://github.com/martius-lab/blackbox-backprop.

Moser inequalities in Gauss space

The sharp constants in a family of exponential Sobolev type inequalities in Gauss space are exhibited. They constitute the Gaussian analogues of the Moser inequality in the borderline case of the Sobolev embedding in the Euclidean space. Interestingly, the Gaussian results have features in common with the Euclidean ones, but also reveal marked diversities.

Interpolation theorem for Marcinkiewicz spaces with applications to Lorentz gamma spaces

This paper is devoted to the interpolation principle between spaces of weak type. We characterise interpolation spaces between two Marcinkiewicz spaces in terms of Hardy type operators involving suprema. We study general properties of such operators and their behavior on Lorentz gamma spaces. A particular emphasis is placed on elementary and comprehensive proofs.

Optimal Orlicz domains in Sobolev embeddings into Marcinkiewicz spaces

In this paper we present a method for determining whether there exists a largest Orlicz space $L^A(Ω)$ satisfying the Sobolev embedding $W^mL^A(Ω) \to Y(Ω)$ where $Y(Ω)$ stands for an arbitrary so-called Marcinkiewicz endpoint space. The tool developed in this work enables us to investigate the optimality of Orlicz domain spaces in Sobolev embeddings and also in Sobolev trace embeddings on domains $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with various regularity.

Boundedness of classical operators on rearrangement-invariant spaces

We study the behaviour on rearrangement-invariant spaces of such classical operators of interest in harmonic analysis as the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator (including the fractional version), the Hilbert and Stieltjes transforms, and the Riesz potential. The focus is on sharpness questions, and we present characterisations of the optimal domain (or range) partner spaces when the range (domain) is fixed. When a rearrangement-invariant partner space exists at all, a complete characterisation of the situation is given. We illustrate the results with a variety of examples of sharp particular results involving customary function spaces.

Also a necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an optimal target and domain spaces are established and the explicit formulas of corresponding optimal Young functions are presented.
