Failures of integral Springer's Theorem

We discuss the phenomenon where an element in a number field is not integrally represented by a given positive definite quadratic form, but becomes integrally represented by this form over a totally real extension of odd degree. We prove that this phenomenon happens infinitely often, and, conversely, establish finiteness results about the situation when the quadratic form is fixed.

Sails for universal quadratic forms

We establish a new connection between sails, a key notion in the geometric theory of generalised continued fractions, and arithmetic of totally real number fields, specifically, universal quadratic forms and additively indecomposable integers. Our main application is to biquadratic fields, for which we show that if their signature rank is at least 3, then ranks of universal forms and numbers of indecomposables grow as a power of the discriminant. We also construct a family in which these numbers grow only logarithmically.

Arithmetic of cubic number fields: Jacobi-Perron, Pythagoras, and indecomposables

We study a new connection between multidimensional continued fractions, such as Jacobi--Perron algorithm, and additively indecomposable integers in totally real cubic number fields. First, we find the indecomposables of all signatures in Ennola's family of cubic fields, and use them to determine the Pythagoras numbers. Second, we compute a number of periodic JPA expansions, also in Shanks' family of simplest cubic fields. Finally, we compare these expansions with indecomposables to formulate our conclusions.

Universal quadratic forms and Northcott property of infinite number fields

We show that if a universal quadratic form exists over an infinite degree, totally real extension of the field of rationals $\mathbb{Q}$, then the set of totally positive integers in the extension does not have the Northcott property. In particular, this implies that no universal form exists over the compositum of all totally real Galois fields of a fixed prime degree over $\mathbb{Q}$. Further, by considering the existence of infinitely many square classes of totally positive units, we show that no classical universal form exists over the compositum of all such fields of degree $3d$ (for each fixed odd integer $d$).

Periodicity of general multidimensional continued fractions using repetend matrix form

We consider expansions of vectors by a general class of multidimensional continued fraction algorithms. If the expansion is eventually periodic, then we describe the possible structure of a matrix corresponding to the repetend, and use it to prove that a number of vectors has an eventually periodic expansion in the Algebraic Jacobi--Perron Algorithm. Further, we give criteria for vectors to have purely periodic expansions; in particular, the vector cannot be totally positive.

Partitions into powers of an algebraic number

We study partitions of complex numbers as sums of non-negative powers of a fixed algebraic number $β$. We prove that if $β$ is real quadratic, then the number of partitions is always finite if and only if some conjugate of $β$ is larger than 1. Further, we show that for $β$ satisfying a certain condition, the partition function attains all non-negative integers as values.

Universal quadratic forms and Dedekind zeta functions

We study universal quadratic forms over totally real number fields using Dedekind zeta functions. In particular, we prove an explicit upper bound for the rank of universal quadratic forms over a given number field $K$, under the assumption that the codifferent of $K$ is generated by a totally positive element. Motivated by a possible path to remove that assumption, we also investigate the smallest number of generators for the positive part of ideals in totally real numbers fields.

On generators of commutative semifields

We study ideal-simple commutative semirings and summarize the results giving their classification, in particular when they are finitely generated. In the principal case of (para)semifields, we then consider their minimal number of generators and show that it grows linearly with the depth of an associated rooted forest.

On continued fraction partial quotients of square roots of primes

We show that for each positive integer $a$ there exist only finitely many prime numbers $p$ such that $a$ appears an odd number of times in the period of continued fraction of $\sqrt{p}$ or $\sqrt{2p}$. We also prove that if $p$ is a prime number and $D=p$ or $2p$ is such that the length of the period of continued fraction expansion of $\sqrt{D}$ is divisible by $4$, then $1$ appears as a partial quotient in the continued fraction of $\sqrt{D}$. Furthermore, we give an upper bound for the period length of continued fraction expansion of $\sqrt{D}$, where $D$ is a positive non-square, and factorize some family of polynomials with integral coefficients connected with continued fractions of square roots of positive integers. These results answer several questions recently posed by Miska and Ulas.

Congruence-simple matrix semirings

It is well known that the full matrix ring over a skew-field is a simple ring. We generalize this theorem to the case of semirings. We characterize the case when the matrix semiring $\mathbf{M}_n(S)$, of all $n\times n$ matrices over a semiring $S$, is congruence-simple, provided that either $S$ has a multiplicatively absorbing element or $S$ is commutative and additively cancellative.

On Kitaoka's conjecture and lifting problem for universal quadratic forms

For a totally positive definite quadratic form over the ring of integers of a totally real number field $K$, we show that there are only finitely many totally real field extensions of $K$ of a fixed degree over which the form is universal (namely, those that have a short basis in a suitable sense). Along the way we give a general construction of a universal form of rank bounded by $D(\log D)^{d-1}$, where $d$ is the degree of $K$ over $\mathbb Q$ and $D$ is its discriminant. Furthermore, for any fixed degree we prove (weak) Kitaoka's conjecture that there are only finitely many totally real number fields with a universal ternary quadratic form.

Consecutive real quadratic fields with large class numbers

For a given positive integer $k$, we prove that there are at least $x^{1/2-o(1)}$ integers $d\leq x$ such that the real quadratic fields $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{d+1}),\dots,\mathbb Q(\sqrt{d+k})$ have class numbers essentially as large as possible.

Ternary quadratic forms representing a given arithmetic progression

A positive quadratic form is $(k,\ell)$-universal if it represents all the numbers $kx+\ell$ where $x$ is a non-negative integer, and almost $(k,\ell)$-universal if it represents all but finitely many of them. We prove that for any $k,\ell$ such that $k\nmid\ell$ there exists an almost $(k,\ell)$-universal diagonal ternary form. We also conjecture that there are only finitely many primes $p$ for which a $(p,\ell)$-universal diagonal ternary form exists (for any $\ell<p$) and we show the results of computer experiments that speak in favor of the conjecture.

Sums of squares in $S$-integers

In totally real number fields, we characterize the rings of $S$-integers (obtained by inverting a rational integer $m$) such that all their totally positive elements are represented as a sum of squares. We further obtain partial answers to the question: when are all the totally positive algebraic integers that are divisible by $m$ represented as a sum of squares?

Universal quadratic forms, small norms and traces in families of number fields

We obtain good estimates on the ranks of universal quadratic forms over Shanks' family of the simplest cubic fields and several other families of totally real number fields. As the main tool we characterize all the indecomposable integers in these fields and the elements of the codifferent of small trace. We also determine the asymptotics of the number of principal ideals of norm less than the square root of the discriminant.

Lifting problem for universal quadratic forms

We study totally real number fields that admit a universal quadratic form whose coefficients are rational integers. We show that $\mathbb Q(\sqrt 5)$ is the only such real quadratic field, and that among fields of degrees 3, 4, 5, and 7 which have principal codifferent ideal, the only one is $\mathbb Q(ζ_7+ζ_7^{-1})$, over which the form $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2+xy+xz+xw$ is universal. Moreover, we prove an upper bound for Pythagoras numbers of orders in number fields that depends only on the degree of the number field.
