Quasi-elastic scattering of proton with 1 GeV energy on eight-nucleon cluster inside nucleus

Available data on the polarization of the secondary proton (as a function of its momentum $K$) in the inelastic ({\it p, p$'$}) reactions with the $^{9}$Be, $^{12}$C, and $^{40}$Ca nuclei and differential cross section data (the momentum distributions) for the reactions at the initial proton energy 1 GeV and scattering angles $Θ$=21$^\circ$ and $Θ$=24.5$^\circ$ were analysed in a range of the high momenta $K$ close to the momentum corresponding to the proton elastic scattering off the investigated nucleus. A structure in the polarization and momentum distribution data at the high momenum $K$, related probably to quasi-elastic scattering off a $^{8}$Be-like nucleon cluster inside the nuclei, was observed.

Minimal sets of dequantizers and quantizers for finite-dimensional quantum systems

The problem of finding and characterizing minimal sets of dequantizers and quantizers applied in the mapping of operators onto functions is considered, for finite-dimensional quantum systems. The general properties of such sets are determined. An explicit description of all the minimum self-dual sets of dequantizers and quantizers for a qubit system is derived. The connection between some known sets of dequantizers and quantizers and the derived formulae is presented.

The structure effects in polarization and cross section in inelastic A(p,p')X reaction with the 40Ca and 12C nuclei at 1 GeV

The polarization of the secondary protons in inelastic (p,p') reaction on the 40Ca and 12C nuclei at the initial proton energy 1 GeV was measured in the wide range of the scattered proton momenta at a laboratory angle 21 degree. The cross section of the reactions were measured as well. The outgoing protons from the reaction were detected using a magnetic spectrometer equipped with a multiwire-proportional chambers polarimeter. A structure in the polarization and cross section data, related probably to scattering of the nucleon correlation in the nuclei, was observed.

Search for narrow resonances in $πp$ elastic scattering from the EPECUR experiment

The analysis of high-precision $π^{\pm}p \to π^{\pm}p$ cross section data from the EPECUR Collaboration based on the multichannel $K$-matrix approach is presented. The sharp structures seen in these data are studied in terms of both opening thresholds and new resonance contributions. Some prominent features are found to be due to the opening $KΣ$ channel. However, a complete description of the data is improved with the addition of two narrow resonant structures at $W\sim 1.686$ and $W\sim 1.720$ GeV. These structures are interpreted as manifestations of $S_{11}$ and $P_{11}$ resonances. The underlying nature of the observed phenomena is discussed.

Measurement of the Formation Rate of Muonic Hydrogen Molecules

Background: The rate λ_ppμ characterizes the formation of ppμ molecules in collisions of muonic pμ atoms with hydrogen. In measurements of the basic weak muon capture reaction on the proton to determine the pseudoscalar coupling g_P, capture occurs from both atomic and molecular states. Thus knowledge of λ_ppμ is required for a correct interpretation of these experiments. Purpose: Recently the MuCap experiment has measured the capture rate Λ_S from the singlet pμ atom, employing a low density active target to suppress ppμ formation (PRL 110, 12504 (2013)). Nevertheless, given the unprecedented precision of this experiment, the existing experimental knowledge in λ_ppμ had to be improved. Method: The MuCap experiment derived the weak capture rate from the muon disappearance rate in ultra-pure hydrogen. By doping the hydrogen with 20 ppm of argon, a competing process to ppμ formation was introduced, which allowed the extraction of λ_ppμ from the observed time distribution of decay electrons. Results: The ppμ formation rate was measured as λ_ppμ= (2.01 +- 0.06(stat) +- 0.03(sys)) 10^6 s^-1. This result updates the λ_ppμ value used in the above mentioned MuCap publication. Conclusions: The 2.5x higher precision compared to earlier experiments and the fact that the measurement was performed at nearly identical conditions to the main data taking, reduces the uncertainty induced by λ_ppμ to a minor contribution to the overall uncertainty of Λ_S and g_P, as determined in MuCap. Our final value for λ_ppμ shifts Λ_S and g_P by less than one tenth of their respective uncertainties compared to our results published earlier.

A high-pressure hydrogen time projection chamber for the MuCap experiment

The MuCap experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute performed a high-precision measurement of the rate of the basic electroweak process of nuclear muon capture by the proton, $μ^- + p \rightarrow n + ν_μ$. The experimental approach was based on the use of a time projection chamber (TPC) that operated in pure hydrogen gas at a pressure of 10 bar and functioned as an active muon stopping target. The TPC detected the tracks of individual muon arrivals in three dimensions, while the trajectories of outgoing decay (Michel) electrons were measured by two surrounding wire chambers and a plastic scintillation hodoscope. The muon and electron detectors together enabled a precise measurement of the $μp$ atom's lifetime, from which the nuclear muon capture rate was deduced. The TPC was also used to monitor the purity of the hydrogen gas by detecting the nuclear recoils that follow muon capture by elemental impurities. This paper describes the TPC design and performance in detail.

The OLYMPUS Experiment

The OLYMPUS experiment was designed to measure the ratio between the positron-proton and electron-proton elastic scattering cross sections, with the goal of determining the contribution of two-photon exchange to the elastic cross section. Two-photon exchange might resolve the discrepancy between measurements of the proton form factor ratio, $μ_p G^p_E/G^p_M$, made using polarization techniques and those made in unpolarized experiments. OLYMPUS operated on the DORIS storage ring at DESY, alternating between 2.01~GeV electron and positron beams incident on an internal hydrogen gas target. The experiment used a toroidal magnetic spectrometer instrumented with drift chambers and time-of-flight detectors to measure rates for elastic scattering over the polar angular range of approximately $25^\circ$--$75^\circ$. Symmetric Møller/Bhabha calorimeters at $1.29^\circ$ and telescopes of GEM and MWPC detectors at $12^\circ$ served as luminosity monitors. A total luminosity of approximately 4.5~fb$^{-1}$ was collected over two running periods in 2012. This paper provides details on the accelerator, target, detectors, and operation of the experiment.

EPECUR setup for the search of narrow baryon resonances in the pion-proton scattering

EPECUR experimental setup is aimed at the search of narrow resonant states by precision measurement of differential and total reaction cross sections of pion-nucleon interaction with 1 MeV pion energy steps. In five years passed from the idea of the experiment till the start of the data taking in April of 2009, a new apparatus was build from scratch at the universal beam line 322 of ITEP proton synchrotron U-10. The setup is essentially a non-magnetic spectrometer with a liquid hydrogen target based on the large aperture drift chambers with hexagonal structure. The unique properties of the beam line allow individual pion momentum measurement with the accuracy better than 0.1%. The momentum tagging is done with 1 mm pitch proportional chambers located in the first focus of the beam line. The design of numerous subsystems of the setup is based on modern electronic components including microprocessors and FPGA. All the subsystems are tuned and tested both individually and as parts of the whole working setup. The distributed data acquisition system uses widely spread USB and Ethernet protocols, which allows to achieve high performance and take full advantage of the industrial solutions.

Marriage of Electromagnetism and Gravity in Extended Space Model and Astrophysical Phenomena

The generalization of Einstein's special theory of relativity (SRT) is proposed. In this model the possibility of unification of scalar gravity and electromagnetism into a single united field is considered. Formally, the generalization of the SRT is that instead of (1+3)-dimensional Minkowski space the (1+4)-dimensional extension G is considered. As a fifth additional coordinate the interval S is used. This value is saved under the usual Lorentz transformations in Minkowski space M, but it changes when the transformations in the extended space G are used. We call this model the extended space model (ESM). From a physical point of view our expansion means that processes in which the rest mass of the particles changes are acceptable now. If the rest mass of a particle does not change and the physical quantities do not depend on an additional variable S, then the electromagnetic and gravitational fields exist independently of each other. But if the rest mass is variable and there is a dependence on S, then these two fields are combined into a single united field. In the extended space model a photon can have a nonzero mass and this mass can be either positive or negative. The gravitational effects such as the speed of escape, gravitational red shift and deflection of light can be analyzed in the frame of the extended space model. In this model all these gravitational effects can be found algebraically by the rotations in the (1+4) dimensional space. Now it becomes possible to predict some future results of visible size of super massive objects in our Universe due to new stage of experimental astronomy development in the Radio Astron Project and analyze phenomena of the star V838 Monocerotis explosion as possible Local Big Bang (LBB).

Measurement of Muon Capture on the Proton to 1% Precision and Determination of the Pseudoscalar Coupling g_P

The MuCap experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute has measured the rate L_S of muon capture from the singlet state of the muonic hydrogen atom to a precision of 1%. A muon beam was stopped in a time projection chamber filled with 10-bar, ultra-pure hydrogen gas. Cylindrical wire chambers and a segmented scintillator barrel detected electrons from muon decay. L_S is determined from the difference between the mu- disappearance rate in hydrogen and the free muon decay rate. The result is based on the analysis of 1.2 10^10 mu- decays, from which we extract the capture rate L_S = (714.9 +- 5.4(stat) +- 5.1(syst)) s^-1 and derive the proton's pseudoscalar coupling g_P(q^2_0 = -0.88 m^2_mu) = 8.06 +- 0.55.

Polarization effects in the quasi - elastic (p,2p) reaction with the nuclear S - shell protons at 1 GeV

The polarization of the secondary protons in the (p,2p) reaction with the S - shell protons of nuclei 4He, 6Li, 12C, 28Si, 40Ca was measured at 1 GeV unpolarized proton beam. The spin correlation parameters Cij for the 4He and 12C targets also were for the first time obtained as well. The polarization measurements were performed by means of a two - arm magnetic spectrometer, each arm of which was equipped with the multiwire proportional chamber polarimeter. This experiment was aimed to study a modification of the proton - proton scattering matrix in the nuclear medium.

High Precision Measurements of the Pion Proton Differential Cross Section

Study of the elastic scattering can produce a rich information on the dynamics of the strong interaction. The EPECUR collaboration is aimed at the research of baryon resonances in the second resonance region via pion-proton elastic scattering and kaon-lambda production. The experiment features high statistics and better than 1 MeV resolution in the invariant mass thus allowing searches for narrow resonances with the coupling to the pi p channel as low as 5%. The experiment is of "formation" type, i.e. the resonances are produced in s-channel and the scan over the invariant mass is done by the variation of the incident pion momentum which is measured with the accuracy of 0.1% with a set of 1 mm pitch proportional chambers located in the first focus of the beam line. The reaction is identified by a magnetless spectrometer based on wire drift chambers with a hexagonal structure. Background suppression in this case depends on the angular resolution, so the amount of matter in the chambers and the setup was minimized to reduce multiple scattering. The measurements started in 2009 with the setup optimized for elastic pion-proton scattering. With 3 billions of triggers already recorded the differential cross section of the elastic pi p-scattering on a liquid hydrogen target in the region of the diffraction minimum is measured with statistical accuracy about 1% in 1 MeV steps in terms of the invariant mass. The paper covers the experimental setup, current status and some preliminary results.

Muon Capture on the Deuteron -- The MuSun Experiment

We propose to measure the rate \Rd\ for muon capture on the deuteron to better than 1.5% precision. This process is the simplest weak interaction process on a nucleus that can both be calculated and measured to a high degree of precision. The measurement will provide a benchmark result, far more precise than any current experimental information on weak interaction processes in the two-nucleon system. Moreover, it can impact our understanding of fundamental reactions of astrophysical interest, like solar pp fusion and the $ν+d$ reactions observed by the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. Recent effective field theory calculations have demonstrated, that all these reactions are related by one axial two-body current term, parameterized by a single low-energy constant. Muon capture on the deuteron is a clean and accurate way to determine this constant. Once it is known, the above mentioned astrophysical, as well as other important two-nucleon reactions, will be determined in a model independent way at the same precision as the measured muon capture reaction.

Search for narrow pion-proton states in s-channel at EPECUR: experiment status

An experiment EPECUR, aimed at the search of the cryptoexotic non-strange member of the pentaquark antidecuplet, started its operation at a pion beam line of the ITEP 10 GeV proton synchrotron. The invariant mass range of the interest (1610-1770) MeV will be scanned for a narrow state in the pion-proton and kaon-lambda systems in the formation-type experiment. The scan in the s-channel is supposed to be done by the variation of the incident pi- momentum and its measurement with the accuracy of up to 0.1% with a set of 1 mm pitch proportional chambers located in the first focus of the beam line. The reactions under the study will be identified by a magnetless spectrometer based on wire drift chambers with a hexagonal structure. Because the background suppression in this experiment depends on the angular resolution, the amount of matter in the chambers and setup is minimized to reduce multiple scattering. The differential cross section of the elastic pi-p-scattering on a liquid hydrogen target in the region of the diffractive minimum will be measured with statistical accuracy 0.5% in 1 MeV steps in terms of the invariant mass. For KLambda-production the total cross section will be measured with 1% statistical accuracy in the same steps. An important byproduct of this experiment will be a very accurate study of Lambda polarization. The setup was assembled and tested in December 2008 and in April 2009 we had the very first physics run. About 0.5x10^9 triggers were written to disk covering pion beam momentum range 940-1135 MeV/c.
