Fermi coordinates and static observer in Schwarzschild spacetime

In this paper we construct the Fermi coordinates along any arbitrary line in simple analytical way without use the orthogonal frames and their parallel transport. In this manner we extend the Eddington approach to the construction of the Fermi metric in terms of the Riemann tensor. In the second part of the present article we show how the proposed approach works practically by applying it for deriving the Fermi coordinates for the static observer in the Schwarzschild spacetime.

On the black holes in external electromagnetic fields

This preprint mainly reflects the new chapter we are prepearing for the second edition of our book "Gravitational Solitons" (V. Belinski and E. Verdaguer). However, here it is written in the form of more or less self-consistent paper dedicated to the mathematical theory of black holes immersed in the external electromagnetic field. The purpose of this development is to describe the procedure by which one can construct a number of axially symmetric black holes or naked singularities arranged along the symmetry axis and immersed in an (also axially symmetric) external electromagnetic field.

Superposition of fields of two rotating charged masses in General Relativity and existence of equilibrium configurations

It is known that two Reissner-Nordstrom black holes or two overextreme Reissner-Nordstrom sources cannot be in physical equilibrium. In the static case such equilibrium is possible only if one of the sources is a black hole and another one is a naked singularity. We define the notion of physical equilibrium in general (stationary) case when both components of a binary system are rotating and show that such system containing a Kerr-Newman black hole and a Kerr-Newman naked singularity also can stay in physical equilibrium. The similar question about the system of two charged rotating black holes or two rotating overextreme charged sources still remains open.

On the stabilization of the Friedmann Big Bang by the shear stresses

The window is found in the space of the free parameters of the theory of viscoelastic matter for which the Friedmann singularity is stable. Under stability we mean that in the presence of the shear stresses the \textit{generic} solution of the equations of relativistic gravity possessing the isotropic, homogeneous and thermally equilibrated cosmological singularity exists.

On the equilibrium state of two rotating charged masses in General Relativity

This paper is a direct continuation of our old publication where it was found the exact solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations for two static sources of Reissner-Nordstrom type in the state of the physical equilibrium. Here we present the exact solution of these equations for the case of two rotating charged sources and we proved the existence of the physical equilibrium state also for this general case.

On Tunnelling Through the Black Hole Horizon

It is shown here that there is no way for particle creation to occur by quantum tunneling through an infinitesimal neighborhood of the black hole horizon. This result is a trivial consequence of the regularity of the horizon, the equivalence principle and the general covariance of the relativistic theory of gravity. Moreover, we also confirm the less trivial statement that no particle creation by quantum tunneling through the black hole horizon is possible independent of the size of the presupposed tunneling domain.

Soliton Nature of Equilibrium State of Two Charged Masses in General Relativity

New derivation of static equilibrium state for two charged masses in General Relativity is given in the framework of the Inverse Scattering Method as an alternative to our previous derivation of this solution by the Integral Equation Method. This shows that such solution is of solitonic character and represents the particular case of more general (12-parametric) stationary axisymmetric electrovacuum two-soliton solution for two rotating charged objects obtained by one of the authors in 1986. This result gives an additional support to our comprehension that the appropriate analytical continuations of solitonic solutions in the space of their parameters are always possible and that applicability of the Inverse Scattering Method in presence of electromagnetic field is not restricted only to the cases with naked singularities.

An Exact General-Relativity Solution for the Motion and Intersections of Self-Gravitating Shells in the Field of a Massive Black Hole

The motion with intersections of relativistic gravitating shells in the Schwarzschild gravitational field of a central body is considered. Formulas are derived for calculating parameters of the shells after intersection via their parameters before intersection. Such special cases as the Newtonian approximation, intersections of light shells, and intersections of a test shell with a gravitating shell are also considered. The ejection of one of the shells to infinity in the relativistic region is described. The equations of motion for the shells are analyzed numerically.

Superposition of fields of two Reissner - Nordstrom sources

In this paper we present a 5-parametric family of static asymptotically flat solutions for the superposed gravitational and electromagnetic fields of two Reissner-Nordström sources with arbitrary parameters -- masses, charges and separating distance. A procedure for solving of the linear singular integral equation form of the electrovacuum Einstein - Maxwell equations for stationary axisymmetric fields is described in detail. The 4-parametric family of equilibrium configurations of two Reissner-Nordström sources (one of which should be a black hole and another one -- a naked singularity) presented in our recent paper \cite{Alekseev-Belinski:2007} arises after a restriction of the parameters of the 5-parametric solution presented here by the equilibrium condition which provides the absence in the solution of conical points on the symmetry axis between the sources.

Equilibrium configurations of two charged masses in General Relativity

An asymptotically flat static solution of Einstein-Maxwell equations which describes the field of two non-extreme Reissner - Nordström sources in equilibrium is presented. It is expressed in terms of physical parameters of the sources (their masses, charges and separating distance). Very simple analytical forms were found for the solution as well as for the equilibrium condition which guarantees the absence of any struts on the symmetry axis. This condition shows that the equilibrium is not possible for two black holes or for two naked singularities. However, in the case when one of the sources is a black hole and another one is a naked singularity, the equilibrium is possible at some distance separating the sources. It is interesting that for appropriately chosen parameters even a Schwarzschild black hole together with a naked singularity can be "suspended" freely in the superposition of their fields.

On chaotic behavior of gravitating stellar shells

Motion of two gravitating spherical stellar shells around a massive central body is considered. Each shell consists of point particles with the same specific angular momenta and energies. In the case when one can neglect the influence of gravitation of one ("light") shell onto another ("heavy") shell ("restricted problem") the structure of the phase space is described. The scaling laws for the measure of the domain of chaotic motion and for the minimal energy of the light shell sufficient for its escape to infinity are obtained.

Chaotic motion and ballistic ejection of gravitating shells

It is shown that during the motion of two initially gravitationally bound spherical shells, consisting of point particles moving along ballistic trajectories, one of the shell may be expelled to infinity at subrelativistic speed $v_{exp}\leq 0.25 c$. The problem is solved in Newtonian gravity. Motion of two intersecting shells in the case when they do not runaway shows a chaotic behaviour. We hope that this toy and oversimplyfied model can give nevertheless a qualitative idea on the nature of the mechanism of matter outbursts from the dense stellar clusters.

An example of a uniformly accelerated particle detector with non-Unruh response

We propose a scalar background in Minkowski spacetime imparting constant proper acceleration to a classical particle. In contrast to the case of a constant electric field the proposed scalar potential does not create particle-antiparticle pairs. Therefore an elementary particle accelerated by such field is a more appropriate candidate for an "Unruh-detector" than a particle moving in a constant electric field. We show that the proposed detector does not reveal the universal thermal response of the Unruh type.

A Cosmic Battery Reconsidered

We revisit the problem of magnetic field generation in accretion flows onto black holes owing to the excess radiation force on electrons. This excess force may arise from the Poynting-Robertson effect. Instead of a recent claim of the generation of dynamically important magnetic fields, we establish the validity of earlier results from 1977 which show only small magnetic fields are generated. The radiative force causes the magnetic field to initially grow linearly with time. However, this linear growth holds for only a {\it restricted} time interval which is of the order of the accretion time of the matter. The large magnetic fields recently found result from the fact that the linear growth is unrestricted. A model of the Poynting-Robertson magnetic field generation close to the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole is solved exactly using General Relativity, and the field is also found to be dynamically insignificant. These weak magnetic fields may however be important as seed fields for dynamos.
