Scattering of gap solitons by PT-symmetric defects

The resonant scattering of gap solitons (GS) of the periodic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a localized defect which is symmetric under the parity and the time-reversal (PT) symmetry, is investigated. It is shown that for suitable amplitudes ratios of the real and imaginary parts of the defect potential the resonant transmission of the GS through the defect becomes possible. The resonances occur for potential parameters which allow the existence of localized defect modes with the same energy and norm of the incoming GS. Scattering properties of GSs of different band-gaps with effective masses of opposite sign are investigated. The possibility of unidirectional transmission and blockage of GSs by PT defect, as well as, amplification and destruction induced by multiple reflections from two PT defects, are also discussed.

Dynamical generation of interwoven soliton trains by nonlinear emission in binary Bose-Einstein condensates

We propose a method for the generation of trains of alternating bright solitons in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates, using controlled emission of nonlinear matter-waves in the uncoupled regime with spatially-varying intra-species interaction and out-of-phase oscillations of the ground states in the trap. Under this scheme, solitons are sequentially launched from the different components, and interact with each other through phase-independent cross-coupling. We obtain an analytical estimation of the critical condition for soliton emission using a geometric guiding model, in analogy with integrated optical systems. In addition, we show how strong initial perturbations in the system can trigger the spontaneous generation of supersolitons, i.e. localized phonon-like excitations of the soliton trains. Finally, we demonstrate the controllable generation of slow and fast supersolitons by adding external localized potentials in the nonlinear region.

Symmetric and asymmetric localized modes in linear lattices with an embedded pair of $χ^{(2)}$-nonlinear sites

We construct families of symmetric, antisymmetric, and asymmetric solitary modes in one-dimensional bichromatic lattices with the second-harmonic-generating ($χ^{(2)}$) nonlinearity concentrated at a pair of sites placed at distance $l$. The lattice can be built as an array of optical waveguides. Solutions are obtained in an implicit analytical form, which is made explicit in the case of adjacent nonlinear sites, $l=1$. The stability is analyzed through the computation of eigenvalues for small perturbations, and verified by direct simulations. In the cascading limit, which corresponds to large mismatch $q$, the system becomes tantamount to the recently studied single-component lattice with two embedded sites carrying the cubic nonlinearity. The modes undergo qualitative changes with the variation of $q$. In particular, at $l\geq 2$, the symmetry-breaking bifurcation (SBB), which creates asymmetric states from symmetric ones, is supercritical and subcritical for small and large values of $q$, respectively, while the bifurcation is always supercritical at $l=1$. In the experiment, the corresponding change of the phase transition between the second and first kinds may be implemented by varying the mismatch, via the wavelength of the input beam. The existence threshold (minimum total power) for the symmetric modes vanishes exactly at $q=0$, which suggests a possibility to create the solitary mode using low-power beams. The stability of solution families also changes with $q$.

Solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates with trap and barrier potential

The propagation of solitons in dipolar BEC in a trap potential with a barrier potential is investigated. The regimes of soliton transmission, reflection and splitting as a function of the ratio between the local and dipolar nonlocal interactions are analyzed analytically and numerically. Coherent splitting and fusion of the soliton by the defect is observed. The conditions for fusion of splitted solitons are found. In addition the delocalization transition governed by the strength of the nonlocal dipolar interaction is presented. Predicted phenomena can be useful for the design of a matter wave splitter and interferometers using matter wave solitons.

Dragging two-dimensional discrete solitons by moving linear defects

We study the mobility of small-amplitude solitons attached to moving defects which drag the solitons across a two-dimensional (2D) discrete nonlinear-Schrödinger (DNLS) lattice. Findings are compared to the situation when a free small-amplitude 2D discrete soliton is kicked in the uniform lattice. In agreement with previously known results, after a period of transient motion the free soliton transforms into a localized mode pinned by the Peierls-Nabarro potential, irrespective of the initial velocity. However, the soliton attached to the moving defect can be dragged over an indefinitely long distance (including routes with abrupt turns and circular trajectories) virtually without losses, provided that the dragging velocity is smaller than a certain critical value. Collisions between solitons dragged by two defects in opposite directions are studied too. If the velocity is small enough, the collision leads to a spontaneous symmetry breaking, featuring fusion of two solitons into a single one, which remains attached to either of the two defects.

Coherent Atomic Soliton Molecules

We discuss the dynamics of interacting atomic bright solitons and dark bubbles in bulk immiscible Bose-Einstein condensates. Coherent matter-wave clusters can be constructed using dark-bright pairs with appropriate phases. In two dimensions we describe novel types of matter-wave molecules without a scalar counterpart that can be seen as bound states of vector objects.

Field patterns in periodically modulated optical parametric amplifiers and oscillators

Spatially localized and periodic field patterns in periodically modulated optical parametric amplifiers and oscillators are studied. In the degenerate case (equal signal and idler beams) we elaborate the systematic method of construction of the stationary localized modes in the amplifiers, study their properties and stability. We describe a method of constructing periodic solutions in optical parametric oscillators, by adjusting the form of the external driven field to the given form of either signal or pump beams.

Nonlinear tunneling in two-dimensional lattices

We present thorough analysis of the nonlinear tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates in static and accelerating two-dimensional lattices within the framework of the mean-field approximation. We deal with nonseparable lattices considering different initial atomic distributions in the highly symmetric states. For analytical description of the condensate before instabilities are developed, we derive several few-mode models, analyzing both essentially nonlinear and quasi-linear regimes of tunneling. By direct numerical simulations, we show that two-mode models provide accurate description of the tunneling when either initially two states are populated or tunneling occurs between two stable states. Otherwise a two-mode model may give only useful qualitative hints for understanding tunneling but does not reproduce many features of the phenomenon. This reflects crucial role of the instabilities developed due to two-body interactions resulting in non-negligible population of the higher bands. This effect becomes even more pronounced in the case of accelerating lattices. In the latter case we show that the direction of the acceleration is a relevant physical parameter which affects the tunneling by changing the atomic rates at different symmetric states and by changing the numbers of bands involved in the atomic transfer.

Partial delocalization of two-component condensates in optical lattices

We study management of localized modes in two-component (spinor) Bose-Einstein condensates embedded in optical lattices by changing interspecies interactions. By numerical integration of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations, we find three different regimes of the delocalizing transition: i) the partial delocalization when the chemical potential of one of the components collapses with a gap edge and the respective component transforms into a Bloch state, while the other component remains localized; ii) the partial delocalization as consequence of instability of one of the components; and iii) the situation where the vector soliton reaches limits of the existence domain. It is shown that there exists a critical value for interspecies scattering length, below which solutions can be manipulated and above which one of the components is irreversibly destroyed.

Delocalizing transition in one-dimensional condensates in optical lattices due to inhomogeneous interactions

It is shown that inhomogeneous nonlinear interactions in a Bose-Einstein condensate loaded in an optical lattice can result in delocalizing transition in one dimension, what sharply contrasts to the known behavior of discrete and periodic systems with homogeneous nonlinearity. The transition can be originated either by decreasing the amplitude of the linear periodic potential or by the change of the mean value of the periodic nonlinearity. The dynamics of the delocalizing transition is studied.

Mixed symmetry localized modes and breathers in binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

We study localized modes in binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates embedded in one-dimensional optical lattices. We report a diversity of asymmetric modes and investigate their dynamics. We concentrate on the cases where one of the components is dominant, i.e. has much larger number of atoms than the other one, and where both components have the numbers of atoms of the same order but different symmetries. In the first case we propose a method of systematic obtaining the modes, considering the "small" component as bifurcating from the continuum spectrum. A generalization of this approach combined with the use of the symmetry of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations allows obtaining breather modes, which are also presented.

Defect modes of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice with a localized impurity

We study defect modes of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice with a localized defect within the framework of the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. It is shown that for a significant range of parameters the defect modes can be accurately described by an expansion over Wannier functions, whose envelope is governed by the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a delta-impurity. The stability of the defect modes is verified by direct numerical simulations of the underlying Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a periodic plus defect potentials. We also discuss possibilities of driving defect modes through the lattice and suggest ideas for their experimental generation.

Nature of intrinsic relation between Bloch-band tunneling and modulational instability

On examples of Bose-Einstein condensates embedded in two-dimensional optical lattices we show that in nonlinear periodic systems modulational instability and inter-band tunneling are intrinsically related phenomena. By direct numerical simulations we found that tunneling results in attenuation or enhancement of instability. On the other hand, instability results in asymmetric nonlinear tunneling. The effect strongly depends on the band gap structure and it is especially significant in the case of the resonant tunneling. The symmetry of the coherent structures emerging from the instability reflects the symmetry of both the stable and the unstable states between which the tunneling occurs. Our results provide an evidence of profound effect of the band structure on superfluid-insulator transition.

Dark solitons as quasiparticles in trapped condensates

We present a theory of dark soliton dynamics in trapped quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates, which is based on the local density approximation. The approach is applicable for arbitrary polynomial nonlinearities of the mean-field equation governing the system as well as to arbitrary polynomial traps. In particular, we derive a general formula for the frequency of the soliton oscillations in confining potentials. A special attention is dedicated to the study of the soliton dynamics in adiabatically varying traps. It is shown that the dependence of the amplitude of oscillations {\it vs} the trap frequency (strength) is given by the scaling law $X_0\proptoω^{-γ}$ where the exponent $γ$ depends on the type of the two-body interactions, on the exponent of the polynomial confining potential, on the density of the condensate and on the initial soliton velocity. Analytical results obtained within the framework of the local density approximation are compared with the direct numerical simulations of the dynamics, showing remarkable match. Various limiting cases are addressed. In particular for the slow solitons we computed a general formula for the effective mass and for the frequency of oscillations.

Effected of Feshbach resonance on dynamics of matter waves in optical lattices

Mean-filed dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) loaded in an optical lattice (OL), confined by a parabolic potentials, and subjected to change of a scattering length by means of the Feshbach resonance (FR), is considered. The system is described by the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation with varying nonlinearity, which in a number of cases can be reduced a one-dimensional perturbed nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. A particular form of the last one depends on relations among BEC parameters. We describe periodic solutions of the NLS equation and their adiabatic dynamics due to varying nonlinearity; carry out numerical study of the dynamics of the NLS equation with periodic and parabolic trap potentials. We pay special attention to processes of generation of trains of bright and dark matter solitons from initially periodic waves.

Driving defect modes of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

We present an approximate analytical theory and direct numerical computation of defect modes of a Bose-Einstein condensate loaded in an optical lattice and subject to an additional localized (defect) potential. Some of the modes are found to be remarkably stable and can be driven along the lattice by means of a defect moving following a step-like function defined by the period of Josephson oscillations and the macroscopic stability of the atoms.

Stable and unstable vector dark solitons of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations. Application to two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Dynamics of vector dark solitons in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates is studied within the framework of the coupled one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations. We consider the small amplitude limit in which the coupled NLS equations are reduced to the coupled Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equations. For a specific choice of the parameters the obtained coupled KdV equations are exactly integrable. We find that there exist two branches of (slow and fast) dark solitons corresponding to the two branches of the sound waves. Slow solitons, corresponding to the lower branch of the acoustic wave appear to be unstable and transform during the evolution into the stable fast solitons (corresponding to the upper branch of the dispersion law). Vector dark solitons of arbitrary depths are studied numerically. It is shown that effectively different parabolic traps, to which the two components are subjected, cause instability of the solitons leading to splitting of their components and subsequent decay. Simple phenomenological theory, describing oscillations of vector dark solitons in a magnetic trap is proposed.

Theory of Nonlinear Matter Waves in Optical Lattices

We consider several effects of the matter wave dynamics which can be observed in Bose-Einstein condensates embedded into optical lattices. For low-density condensates we derive approximate evolution equations, the form of which depends on relation among the main spatial scales of the system. Reduction of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation to a lattice model (the tight-binding approximation) is also presented. Within the framework of the obtained models we consider modulational instability of the condensate, solitary and periodic matter waves, paying special attention to different limits of the solutions, i.e. to smooth movable gap solitons and to strongly localized discrete modes. We also discuss how the Feshbach resonance, a linear force, and lattice defects affect the nonlinear matter waves.
