Decoherence induced by long wavelength gravitons

We discuss how a background bath of gravitons can induce decoherence of quantum systems. The mechanism is dephasing, the loss of phase coherence due to quantum geometry fluctuations caused by the gravitons. This effect is illustrated in a simple analog model of quantum particles in a cavity whose walls undergo position fluctuations, and create the same effect expected from spacetime geometry fluctuations. We obtain an explicit result for the decoherence rate in the limit where the graviton wavelength is large compared to the size of the quantum system, and make some estimates for this rate.

Vacuum Lightcone Fluctuations in a Dielectric

A model for observable effects of electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations is presented. The model involves a probe pulse which traverses a slab of nonlinear optical material with a nonzero second order polarizability. We argue that the pulse interacts with the ambient vacuum fluctuations of other modes of the quantized electric field, and these vacuum fluctuations cause variations in the flight time of the pulse through the material. The geometry of the slab of material defines a sampling function for the quantized electric field, which in turn determines that vacuum modes whose wavelengths are of the order of the thickness of the slab give the dominant contribution. Some numerical estimates are made, which indicate that fractional fluctuations in flight time of the order of $10^{-9}$ are possible in realistic situations. The model presented here is both an illustration of a physical effect of vacuum fluctuations, and an analog model for the lightcone fluctuations predicted by quantum gravity.

Quantum Brownian motion near a point-like reflecting boundary

The Brownian motion of a test particle interacting with a quantum scalar field in the presence of a perfectly reflecting boundary is studied in (1 + 1)-dimensional flat spacetime. Particularly, the expressions for dispersions in velocity and position of the particle are explicitly derived and their behaviors examined. The results are similar to those corresponding to an electric charge interacting with a quantum electromagnetic field near a reflecting plane boundary, mainly regarding the divergent behavior of the dispersions at the origin (where the boundary is placed), and at the time interval corresponding to a round trip of a light pulse between the particle and the boundary. We close by addressing some effects of allowing the position of the particle to fluctuate.

An Analog Model for Light Propagation in Semiclassical Gravity

We treat a model based upon nonlinear optics for the semiclassical gravitational effects of quantum fields upon light propagation. Our model uses a nonlinear material with a nonzero third order polarizability. Here a probe light pulse satisfies a wave equation containing the expectation value of the squared electric field. This expectation value depends upon the presence of lower frequency quanta, the background field, and modifies the effective index of refraction, and hence the speed of the probe pulse. If the mean squared electric field is positive, then the pulse is slowed, which is analogous to the gravitational effects of ordinary matter. Such matter satisfies the null energy condition and produce gravitational lensing and time delay. If the mean squared field is negative, then the pulse has a higher speed than in the absence of the background field. This is analogous to the gravitational effects of exotic matter, such as stress tensor expectation values with locally negative energy densities, which lead to repulsive gravitational effects, such as defocussing and time advance. We give some estimates of the magnitude of the effects in our model, and find that they may be large enough to be observable. We also briefly discuss the possibility that the mean squared electric field could be produced by the Casimir vacuum near a reflecting boundary.

Analogue black holes for light rays in static dielectrics

Propagation of light in nonlinear materials is here studied in the regime of the geometrical optics. It is shown that a spherically symmetric medium at rest with some specific dielectric properties can be used to produce an exact analogue model for a class of space-times which includes spherically symmetric and static black hole solutions. The optical model here presented can be a useful tool to reproduce in laboratory the behavior of optical null geodesics near a compact object with an observable gravitational Schwarzschild radius.

Light-cone fluctuations and the renormalized stress tensor of a massless scalar field

We investigate the effects of light-cone fluctuations over the renormalized vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy tensor of a real massless minimally coupled scalar field defined in a ($d+1$)-dimensional flat space-time with topology ${\cal R}\times {\cal S}^d$. For modeling the influence of light-cone fluctuations over the quantum field, we consider a random Klein-Gordon equation. We study the case of centered Gaussian processes. After taking into account all the realizations of the random processes, we present the correction caused by random fluctuations. The averaged renormalized vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy associated with the scalar field is presented.

Decoherence induced by fluctuating boundaries

The effects of fluctuating boundaries on a superposition state of a quantum particle in a box is studied. We consider a model in one space dimension in which the initial state is a coherent superposition of two energy eigenstates. The locations of the walls of the box are assumed to undergo small fluctuation with a Gaussian probability distribution. The spatial probability density of the particle contains an interference term, which is found to decay in time due to the boundary fluctuations. At late times, this term vanishes and the quantum coherence is lost. The system is now described by a density matrix rather than a pure quantum state. This model gives a simple illustration of how environment-induced decoherence can take place in quantum systems. It can also serve as an analog model for the effects of spacetime geometry fluctuations on quantum systems.

An Analog Model for Quantum Lightcone Fluctuations in Nonlinear Optics

We propose an analog model for quantum gravity effects using nonlinear dielectrics. Fluctuations of the spacetime lightcone are expected in quantum gravity, leading to variations in the flight times of pulses. This effect can also arise in a nonlinear material. We propose a model in which fluctuations of a background electric field, such as that produced by a squeezed photon state, can cause fluctuations in the effective lightcone for probe pulses. This leads to a variation in flight times analogous to that in quantum gravity. We make some numerical estimates which suggest that the effect might be large enough to be observable.

Gravitational spectral shift caused by Casimir stresses

The linearized Einstein field equations with the renormalized stress tensor of a massless quantum scalar field as source are solved in the 4-dimensional spacetime near an infinite plane boundary. The motion of particles and light is investigated disclosing a variety of effects. For instance, it is shown that light rays initially parallel to the boundary do not bend. On the other hand, under the same initial conditions, particles will be affected by the presence of the quantum field, being accelerated toward the plane boundary or departing from it depending on the value of the curvature coupling parameter ξ. It is suggested that ξ can be set by measuring the spectral deviation of a light ray travelling perpendicularly to the boundary.

Testing the Newton second law in the regime of small accelerations

It has been pointed out that the Newtonian second law can be tested in the very small acceleration regime by using the combined movement of the Earth and Sun around the Galactic center of mass. It has been shown that there are only two brief intervals during the year in which the experiment can be completed, which correspond to only two specific spots on the Earth surface. An alternative experimental setup is presented to allow the measurement to be made on Earth at any location and at any time.

Propagation of field disturbances in the Yang-Mills theory

The propagation of field disturbances is examined in the context of the effective Yang-Mills Lagrangian, which is intended to be applied to QCD systems. It is shown that birefringence phenomena can occur in such systems provided some restrictive conditions, as causality, are fulfilled. Possible applications to phenomenology are addressed.

Birefringence in nonlinear anisotropic dielectric media

Light propagation is investigated in the context of local anisotropic nonlinear dielectric media at rest with the dielectric coefficients $ε^μ_ν= ε^μ_ν(\vec{E},\vec{B})$ and constant $μ$, in the limit of geometrical optics. Birefringence was examined and the general conditions for its occurrence were presented. A toy model is exhibited, in which uniaxial birefringent media with nonlinear dielectric properties could be driven by external fields in such way that birefringence may be artificially controlled. The effective geometry interpretation is also addressed.

Semiclassical back reaction around a cosmic dislocation

The energy-momentum vacuum average of a conformally coupled massless scalar field vibrating around a cosmic dislocation (a cosmic string with a dislocation along its axis) is taken as source of the linearized semiclassical Einstein equations. The solution up to first order in the Planck constant is derived. Motion of a test particle is then discussed, showing that under certain circumstances a helical-like dragging effect, with no classical analogue around the cosmic dislocation, is induced by back reaction.

Vacuum stress around a topological defect

We show that a dispiration (a disclination plus a screw dislocation) polarizes the vacuum of a scalar field giving rise to an energy momentum tensor which, as seen from a local inertial frame, presents non vanishing off-diagonal components. The results may have applications in cosmology (chiral cosmic strings) and condensed matter physics (materials with linear defects).

Renormalized scalar propagator around a dispiration

The renormalized Feynman propagator for a scalar field in the background of a cosmic dispiration (a disclination plus a screw dislocation) is derived, opening a window to investigate vacuum polarization effects around a cosmic string with dislocation, as well as in the bulk of an elastic solid carrying a dispiration. The use of the propagator is illustrated by computing vacuum fluctuations. In particular it is shown that the dispiration polarizes the vacuum giving rise to an energy momentum tensor which, as seen from a local inertial frame, presents non vanishing off-diagonal components. Such a new effect resembles that where an induced vacuum current arises around a needle solenoid carrying a magnetic flux (the Aharonov-Bohm effect), and may have physical consequences. Connections with a closely related background, namely the spacetime of a spinning cosmic string, are briefly addressed.

On optical black holes in moving dielectrics

We study the optical paths of the light rays propagating inside a nonlinear moving dielectric media. For the rapidly moving dielectrics we show the existence of a distinguished surface which resembles, as far as the light propagation is concerned, the event horizon of a black hole. Our analysis clarifies the physical conditions under which electromagnetic analogues of the gravitational black holes can eventually be obtained in laboratory.

Vacuum polarization on the spinning circle

Vacuum polarization of a massive scalar field in the background of a two-dimensional version of a spinning cosmic string is investigated. It is shown that when the `radius of the universe' is such that spacetime is globally hyperbolic the vacuum fluctuations are well behaved, diverging though on the `chronology horizon'. Naive use of the formulae when spacetime is nonglobally hyperbolic leads to unphysical results. It is also pointed out that the set of normal modes used previously in the literature to address the problem gives rise to two-point functions which do not have a Hadamard form, and therefore are not physically acceptable. Such normal modes correspond to a locally (but not globally) Minkowski time, which appears to be at first sight a natural choice of time to implement quantization.

Nonlinear electrodynamics and FRW cosmology

Maxwell electrodynamics, considered as a source of the classical Einstein field equations, leads to the singular isotropic Friedmann solutions. We show that this singular behavior does not occur for a class of nonlinear generalizations of the electromagnetic theory. A mathematical toy model is proposed for which the analytical nonsingular extension of FRW solutions is obtained.
