Coordinate- and spacetime-independent quantum physics

The concept of a particle is ambiguous in quantum field theory. It is generally agreed that particles depend not only on spacetime, but also on coordinates used to parametrise spacetime points. One of us has in contrast proposed a coordinate-frame-independent model of quantum particles within the framework of quantum field theory in curved spacetime. The aim of this article is to present a scalar-field-equation solution that is not only a zero-rank tensor under general coordinate transformations, but also common for anti-de-Sitter, de-Sitter, closed and open Einstein static universes. Moreover, it locally reduces to a Minkowski plane-wave solution and is non-perturbative in curvature. The former property makes it suitable for the standard applications of quantum theory in particle physics, while the latter allows then to gain insights into quantum physics in the strong-gravity regime.

Quantum scattering process and information transfer out of a black hole

We calculate the probability amplitude for tree-level elastic electron-muon scattering in Minkowski spacetime with carefully prepared initial and final wave packets. The obtained nonzero amplitude implies a nonvanishing probability for detecting a recoil electron outside the light-cone of the initial muon. Transposing this Minkowski-spacetime scattering result to a near-horizon spacetime region of a massive Schwarzschild black hole and referring to a previously proposed Gedankenexperiment, we conclude that, in principle, it is possible to have information transfer from inside the black-hole horizon to outside.

On quantum corrections to geodesics in de-Sitter spacetime

We find a coordinate-independent wave-packet solution of the massive Klein-Gordon equation with the conformal coupling to gravity in the de-Sitter universe. This solution can locally be represented through the superposition of positive-frequency plane waves at any space-time point, assuming that the scalar-field mass $M$ is much bigger than the de-Sitter Hubble constant $H$. The solution is also shown to be related to the two-point function in the de-Sitter quantum vacuum. Moreover, we study the wave-packet propagation over cosmological times, depending on the ratio of $M$ and $H$. In doing so, we find that this wave packet propagates like a point-like particle of the same mass if $M \ggg H$, but, if otherwise, the wave packet behaves highly non-classically.

Charge extraction from a black hole

Following up on earlier work about across-horizon quantum scattering and information transfer outwards across the black-hole horizon, we show that it is also possible to extract electric charge from a static nonrotating black hole. This result can be extended to other types of charge with a gauge-boson coupling and to nonstatic rotating black holes.

Across-horizon scattering and information transfer

We address the question whether or not two electrically charged elementary particles can Coulomb scatter if one of these particles is inside the Schwarzschild black-hole horizon and the other outside. It can be shown that the quantum process is consistent with the local energy-momentum conservation law. This result implies that across-horizon scattering is a physical effect, relevant to astrophysical black holes. We propose a Gedankenexperiment which uses the quantum scattering process to transfer information from inside the black-hole horizon to outside.
