MgB2: superconductivity and pressure effects

We present a Ginzburg-Landau theory for a two-band superconductor with emphasis on MgB$_{2}$. Experiments are proposed which lead to identification of the possible scenarios: whether both $σ$- and $π$-bands superconduct or $σ$% -alone. According to the second scenario a microscopic theory of superconducting MgB$_{2}$ is proposed based on the strongly interacting $% σ$-electrons and non-correlated $π$-electrons of boron ions. The kinematic and Coulomb interactions of $σ$% -electrons provide the superconducting state with an anisotropic gap of $s$% *-wave symmetry. The critical temperature $T_{c}$ has a non-monotonic dependence on the distance $r$ between the centers of gravity of $σ$- and $π$-bands. The position of MgB$_{2}$ on a bell-shaped curve $T_{c}$ ($% r)$ is identified in the overdoped region. The derived superconducting density of electronic states is in agreement with available experimental and theoretical data. It is argued that the effects of pressure are crucial to identify the microscopic origin of superconductivity in MgB$_{2}$. Possibilities for $T_{c}$ increase are discussed.

Ginzburg-Landau theory and effects of pressure on a two-band superconductor : application to MgB2

We present a model of pressure effects of a two-band superconductor based on a Ginzburg-Landau free energy with two order parameters. The parameters of the theory are pressure as well as temperature dependent. New pressure effects emerge as a result of the competition between the two bands. The theory then is applied to MgB2. We identify two possible scenaria regarding the fate of the two $σ$ subbands under pressure, depending on whether or not both subbands are above the Fermi energy at ambient pressure. The splitting of the two subbands is probably caused by the E2g distortion. If only one subband is above the Fermi energy at ambient pressure (scenario I), application of pressure diminishes the splitting and it is possible that the lower subband participates in the superconductivity. The corresponding crossover pressure and Gruneisen parameter are estimated. In the second scenario both bands start above the Fermi energy and they move below it, either by pressure or via the substitution of Mg by Al. In both scenaria, the possibility of electronical topological transition is emphasized. Experimental signatures of both scenaria are presented and existing experiments are discussed in the light of the different physical pictures.

Superconductivity in mesoscopic high-$T_{c}$ superconducting particles

Based on the Hubbard model in the framework of non-phonon kinematical mechanism and taking into account the discreetness of an electronic energy spectrum, the superconducting critical temperature of a mesoscopic high-$T_{c}$ sphere is analyzed as a function of doping and as a function of a particle's radius. The critical temperature $T_{c}$ is found to be an oscillating function of the radius of a particle. The size-dependent doping regime is revealed in high-$T_{c}$ nanoparticles. Our analysis shows that each oscillation in $T_{c}$ corresponds to the increase of a number of the energy levels in the sphere by one. The amplitude of oscillations of $T_{c}$ increases with decreasing $R$ and can reach a value of 6 K for nanopartilces with sizes about 25 nm, in a good agreement with experimental studies of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ nanoparticles.

On the nature of ferromagnetism in diluted magnetic semiconductors: GaAs:Mn, GaP:Mn

A microscopic Hamiltonian for interacting manganese impurities in diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) is derived. It is shown that in p -type III-V DMS the indirect exchange between Mn impurities has similarities with the Zener mechanism in transition metal oxides. Here the mobile holes and localized states near the top of the valence band play the role of unoccupied oxygen orbitals which induce ferromagnetism. The Curie temperature estimated from the proposed kinematic exchange agrees with recent experiments on GaAs:Mn. The model is also applicable to the GaP:Mn system.

Pressure Effects and Large Polarons in Layered MgB_2 Superconductor

We consider the dependence of the MgB_2 superconducting critical temperature on the pressure. Our model exploits the influence of the large polarons on the band structure of the layered MgB_2 superconductor. Namely, the hole Pekar-Froehlich polarons form quasi two-dimensional potential wells in the boron plane which shift the positions of the sigma- and pi-bands. This energy shift depends on the pressure and the Cooper pairing of the correlated sigma-electrons happens inside polaron wells. The results obtained are as follows: dT_c/dp = -α(5.2 \pm 0.9) K/GPa or dT_c/dp = -α(6.9\pm 1.1) K/GPa for a different choice of the Grueneisen parameter. Being compared with known experimental data they give us a resonable interval for the value of the Froehlich electron-phonon coupling constant: α= 0.15 - 0.45.

Coil-Globule Transition for Regular, Random and Specially Designed Copolymers: Monte Carlo Simulation and Self-Consistent Field Theory

The coil-globule transition has been studied for A-B copolymer chains both by means of lattice Monte Carlo simulations using bond fluctuation algorithm and by a numerical self-consistent field method. Copolymer chains of fixed length with A and B monomeric units with regular, random and specially designed (protein-like) primary sequences have been investigated. The dependence of the transition temperature on the AB sequence has been analyzed. A protein-like copolymer is more stable than a copolymer with statistically random sequence. The transition is more sharpe for random copolymers. It is found that there exist a temperature below which the chain appears to be in the lowest energy state (ground state). Both for random and protein-like sequences and for regular copolymers with a relatively long repeating block, a molten globule regime is found between the ground state temperature and the transition temperature. For regular block copolymers the transition temperature increases with block size. Qualitatively, the results from both methods are in agreement. Differences between the methods result from approximations in the SCF theory and equilibration problems in MC simulations. The two methods are thus complementary.

Strongly interacting $σ$-electrons and MgB$_2$ superconductivity

MgB$(p^{n_σ}p^{n_π})_{2}$ is classified as a system with strongly interacting $σ$-electrons and non-correlated $π$-electrons of boron ions. The kinematic and Coulomb interaction V between the orbitally degenerated $σ$-electrons provide the superconducting state with an anisotropic gap of s*-wave symmetry. The critical temperature $T_c$ has a non-monotonic dependence on the distance r between the centers of gravity of $σ$- and $π$-bands. MgB$_2$ corresponds to r=0.085 eV and V=0.45 eV in our model with flat bands. The derived superconducting density of electronic states is in good agreement with available experimental and theoretical data. The possibilities for increasing $T_c$ are discussed.

Spin-engineered quantum dots

Spatially nonhomogeneously spin polarized nuclei are proposed as a new mechanism to monitor electron states in a nanostructure, or as a means to createn and, if necessary, reshape such nanostructures in the course of the experiment. We found that a polarization of nulear spins may lift the spin polarization of the electron states in a nanostructure and, if sufficiently strong, leads to a polarization of the electron spins. Polarized nuclear spins may form an energy landscape capable of binding electrons with energy up to several meV and the localization radius $ >$ 100Å.

Raman scattering study of phonon and spin modes in (TMTSF)2PF6

We have studied polarized Raman spectra of (TMTSF)2PF6 single crystals in the wide spectral and temperature range using different laser energies. We observed and assigned 23 Raman active modes. The carbon C=C in-phase and out-of-phase stretching modes at 1464 cm-1 and 1602 cm-1 show strong electron-molecular-vibration coupling. The mode at about 1565 cm-1 is temperature independent below 50 K due to the methyl group motion freezing. For (TMTSF)2PF6 in the spin density wave phase for a temperature induced dimensionality 1D (quarter filled dimerized linear chain with correlated electrons) the spin gapless magnon spectra have been calculated. No evidence of spin-lattice coupling or spin-related modes is found in the Raman spectra in the spin density wave phase.

Optical studies of gap, hopping energies and the Anderson-Hubbard parameter in the zigzag-chain compound SrCuO2

We have investigated the electronic structure of the zigzag ladder (chain) compound SrCuO2 combining polarized optical absorption, reflection, photoreflectance and pseudo-dielectric function measurements with the model calculations. These measurements yield an energy gap of 1.42 eV (1.77 eV) at 300 K along (perpendicular) to the Cu-O chains. We have found that the lowest energy gap, the correlation gap, is temperature independent. The electronic structure of this oxide is calculated using both the local-spin-density-approximation with gradient correction method, and the tight-binding theory for the correlated electrons. The calculated density of electronic states for non-correlated and correlated electrons shows quasi-one-dimensional character. The correlation gap values of 1.42 eV (indirect transition) and 1.88 eV (direct transition) have been calculated with the electron hopping parameters t = 0.30 eV (along a chain), t_yz = 0.12 eV (between chains) and the Anderson-Hubbard repulsion on copper sites U= 2.0 eV. We concluded that SrCuO_2 belongs to the correlated-gap insulators.

Optical Properties of the Spin-Ladder Compound Sr_{14}Cu_{24}O_{41}

We report the measurements of the pseudodielectric function, far-infrared reflectivity and Raman scattering spectra in Sr_{14}Cu_{24}O_{41} single crystal. We study the lattice and the spin dynamics of the Cu$_2$O$_3$ spin ladders and CuO$_2$ chains of this compound. The ellipsometric and the optical reflectivity measurements yield the gap values of 1.4 eV, 1.86 eV, 2.34 eV (2.5 eV) for the ladders (chains) along the {\bf c}-axis and 2.4 eV along the {\bf a}-axis. The electronic structure of the Cu$_2$O$_3$ ladders is analyzed using tight-binding approach for the correlated electron systems. The correlation gap value of 1.4 eV is calculated with the transfer energy (hopping) parameters $t=t_{0}$=0.26 eV, along and perpendicular to legs, $t_{xy}$=0.026 eV (interladder hopping) and U=2.1 eV, as a Coulomb repulsion. The optical parameters of the infrared active phonons and plasmons are obtained by oscillator fitting procedure of the reflectivity spectra. Raman scattering spectra are measured at different temperatures using different laser line energies. The two-magnon peak is observed at about 2880 cm$^{-1}$. At temperatures below 150 K the new infrared and Raman modes appear due to the charge ordering.

Superconductivity with angular dependent coupling: stripes, Coulomb repulsion and enhanced Tc

We have analysed the effect of intrinsic doping inhomogeneity and the presence of stripes in high-T_c superconductors on coupling λby using a simple analytically solvable model with an angular dependent λ(ϕ) represented by a square-well form. We have found that the introduction of the Coulomb repulsion λ_C, increasing the ''contrast'' | λ| + | λ_C |, or the depth of the angular modulation of λ(ϕ), leads to a remarkable enhancement of T_c. This effect can be optimized by combining attractive (λ<0) and repulsive (λ>0) interactions along stripes and perpendicular to them.

Effective Dimensionality and Band Structure of alpha-Nav_2o_5 Compound: 1D or 2D?

The AV_nO_{2n+1} mixed valence compounds (n=1, A=Na) are classified as dimerized layered system with strongly interacting d-electrons of vanadium ions. The derived band gaps, energy dispersion relations and density of electronic states are in a good agreement with available experimental and theoretical data. The correlated band gap provides the insulating state of the high-temperature alpha-NaV_2O_5 phase whereas the state, earlier misrepresented as the spin-Peierls state, is governed, in fact, by opening of the Coulomb gap.
