Observation of a Griffiths phase in paramagnetic La1-xSrxMnO3

We report on the discovery of a novel triangular phase regime in the system La1-xSrxMnO3 by means of electron spin resonance and magnetic susceptibility measurements. This phase is characterized by the coexistence of ferromagnetic entities within the globally paramagnetic phase far above the magnetic ordering temperature. The nature of this phase can be understood in terms of Griffiths singularities arising due to the presence of correlated quenched disorder in the orthorhombic phase.

Electron Spin-Lattice Relaxation of doped Yb3+ ions in YBa2Cu3Ox

The electron spin-lattice relaxation (SLR) times T1 of Yb3+‡ ions were measured from the temperature dependence of electron spin resonance linewidth in Y0.99Yb0.01Ba2Cu3Ox with different oxygen contents. Raman relaxation processes dominate the electron SLR. Derived from the temperature dependence of the SLR rate, the Debye temperature (Td) increases with the critical temperature Tc and oxygen content x. Electron Spin-Lattice Relaxation of Er3+ ions in Er0.01Y0.99Ba2Cu3Ox

The temperature dependence of the electron spin-lattice relaxation SLR was studied in Er0.01Y0.99Ba2Cu3Ox compounds. The data derived from the electron spin resonance ESR and SLR measurements were compared to those from inelastic neutron scattering studies. SLR of Er3+ ions in the temperature range from 20 K to 65 K can be explained by the resonant phonon relaxation process with the involvement of the lowest excited crystalline-electric-field electronic states of Er3+. These results are consistent with a local phase separation effects. Possible mechanisms of the ESR line broadening at lower temperatures are discussed. EPR study of some rare-earth ions (Dy3+, Tb3+ and Nd3+) in YBa2Cu3O6 compound

We investigate the low temperature X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of YBa2Cu3O6 compounds with x = 6.0 doped with Dy3+, Tb3+, and Nd3+. The EPR spectra of Dy3+ and Tb3+ have been identified. The EPR of Tb3+ is used also to study the effect of suppression of high Tc superconductivity. The EPR of Nd3+ is probably masked by the intense resonance of Cu2+. All experimental EPR results compare well with theoretical estimations.

Magnetic Anisotropy in La_0.8Sr_0.2MnO_3: Electron Spin Resonance

We report on Ferromagnetic-Resonance experiments in a single crystal of La_0.8Sr_0.2MnO_3 in the temperature range from 4 to 300 K. The observed anisotropy of the resonance line changes on crossing the transition from the orthorhombic O-phase to the rhombohedral R-phase at T~100 K and indicates a reorientation of the spins at about 130 K.

Crystal Field and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya Interaction in orbitally ordered La_{0.95}Sr_{0.05}MnO_3: An ESR Study

We present a comprehensive analysis of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction and crystal-field parameters using the angular dependence of the paramagnetic resonance shift and linewidth in single crystals of La_{0.95}Sr_{0.05}MnO_3 within the orthorhombic Jahn-Teller distorted phase. The Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction (~ 1K) results from the tilting of the MnO_6 octahedra against each other. The crystal-field parameters D and E are found to be of comparable magnitude (~ 1K) with D ~= -E. This indicates a strong mixing of the |3z^2-r^2> and |x^2-y^2> states for the real orbital configuration.

ESR study in lightly doped La_(1-x)Sr_(x)MnO_(3)

This is the first systematic ESR investigation of La_(1-x)Sr_(x)MnO_(3) single crystals for Sr concentrations x < 0.2. The rich phase diagram of this compound, which is dominated by the Jahn-Teller effect of Mn^(3+), is a matter of actual interest in connection with giant magnetoresistance phenomena. The ESR signal, which is due to both Mn^(3+) and Mn^(4+), directely probes the suppression of the Jahn-Teller distortion with increasing Sr concentration and reveals all characteristic structural and magnetic phase transitions.
