CsI(Tl) for WIMP dark matter searches

We report a study of CsI(Tl) scintillator to assess its applicability in experiments to search for dark matter particles. Measurements of the mean scintillation pulse shapes due to nuclear and electron recoils have been performed. We find that, as with NaI(Tl), pulse shape analysis can be used to discriminate between electron and nuclear recoils down to 4 keV. However, the discrimination factor is typically (10-15)% better than in NaI(Tl) above 4 keV. The quenching factor for caesium and iodine recoils was measured and found to increase from 11% to ~17% with decreasing recoil energy from 60 to 12 keV. Based on these results, the potential sensitivity of CsI(Tl) to dark matter particles in the form of neutralinos was calculated. We find an improvement over NaI(Tl) for the spin independent WIMP-nucleon interactions up to a factor of 5 assuming comparable electron background levels in the two scintillators.

Narrow muon bundles from muon pair production in rock

We revise the process of muon pair production by high-energy muons in rock using the recently published cross-section. The three-dimensional Monte Carlo code MUSIC has been used to obtain the characteristics of the muon bundles initiated via this process. We have compared them with those of conventional muon bundles initiated in the atmosphere and shown that large underground detectors, capable of collecting hundreds of thousands of multiple muon events, can discriminate statistically muon induced bundles from conventional ones. However, we find that the enhancement of the measured muon decoherence function over that predicted at small distances, recently reported by the MACRO experiment, cannot be explained by the effect of muon pair production alone, unless its cross-section is underestimated by a factor of 3.

Fermion dominated composite superstring model and unified description of hadron and lepton degrees of freedom in it

New string dynamics is formulated on the basis of the extended set of supergauge constraints including not only supergauge Virasoro conditions but also nilpotent supercurrent constraints . This approach arises from a natural generalization of the classical operator many-string vertices. The formulation of this model leads to three two-dimensional surfaces for description of hadron strings. It gives some dynamical generalization of Chan-Paton factor for string amplitudes in terms of operator vertices. Supersymmetry on the 2-d world surface is present but ten-dimensional supersymmetry is absent. In this approach two-dimensional fermion string fields make it possible to give a unified description of hadron and lepton degrees of freedom and of its dynamics. This model allows to solve the problem of elimination of the most part of parity twins in the baryon spectrum. One-loop (and many-loops perhaps) amplitudes in this model are finite due to the extended set of supergauge constraints and to the significant excess of the total number of fermion two-dimensional fields over the number of boson 2-d fields.

Characteristics of Alpha, Gamma and Nuclear Recoil Pulses from NaI(Tl) at 10-100 keV Relevant to Dark Matter Searches

Measurements of the shapes of scintillation pulses produced by nuclear recoils, alpha particles and photons in NaI(Tl) crystals at visible energies of 10-100 keV have been performed in order to investigate possible sources of background in NaI(Tl) dark matter experiments and, in particular, the possible origin of the anomalous fast time constant events observed in the UK Dark Matter Collaboration experiments at Boulby mine. Pulses initiated by X-rays (via photoelectric effect close to the surface of the crystal) were found not to differ from those produced by high-energy photons (via Compton electrons inside the crystal) within experimental errors. However, pulses induced by alpha particles (degraded from an external MeV source) were found to be ~10% faster than those of nuclear recoils, but insufficiently fast to account for the anomalous events.

A Three-Dimensional Code for Muon Propagation through the Rock: MUSIC

We present a new three-dimensional Monte-Carlo code MUSIC (MUon SImulation Code) for muon propagation through the rock. All processes of muon interaction with matter with high energy loss (including the knock-on electron production) are treated as stochastic processes. The angular deviation and lateral displacement of muons due to multiple scattering, as well as bremsstrahlung, pair production and inelastic scattering are taken into account. The code has been applied to obtain the energy distribution and angular and lateral deviations of single muons at different depths underground. The muon multiplicity distributions obtained with MUSIC and CORSIKA (Extensive Air Shower simulation code) are also presented. We discuss the systematic uncertainties of the results due to different muon bremsstrahlung cross-sections.

A possible description of the quantum numbers in a hadronic string model

We consider a critical composite superconformal string model to desribe hadronic interactions. We present a new approach of introducing hadronic quantum numbers in the scattering amplitudes. The physical states carry the quantum numbers and form a common system of eigenfunctions of the operators in this string model. We give explicit constructions of the quantum number operators.

Critical Composite Superconformal String

In the paper the nilpotent conditions of BRST operator for new superconformal string model were found. This string includes anticommutation $2-d$ fields additional to the standard Neveu-Schwarz superconformal set which carry quark quantum numbers. In this case the superconformal symmetry is realized by a non-linear way. In the superconformal composite string new constraints for 1 and 1/2 conformal dimension should be added to the standard system of Virasoro superalgebra constraints for 2 and 3/2 conformal dimensions. The number $N$ of the constraints and numbers $D$ and $D'$ of bosonic and fermionic $2-d$ fields are connected by a simple relationship $D'/2+D-3N-15=0.$ Also perspectives of the critical composite superconformal string are discussed.
