The Local Incompressibility of Fractional Quantum Hall States at a Filling Factor of 3/2

We studied neutral excitations in a two-dimensional electron system with an orbital momentum $ΔM = 1$ and spin projection over magnetic field axis $ΔS_z = 1$ in the vicinity of a filling factor of 3/2. It is shown that the 3/2 state is a singular point in the filling factor dependence of the spin ordering of the two-dimensional electron system. In the vicinity of $ν=3/2$, a significant increase in the relaxation time ($τ= 13$ $μ\text{s}$) for the excitations to the ground state is exhibited even though the number of vacancies in the lowest energy level is macroscopically large. The decrease of the relaxation rate is related to the spin texture transformation in the ground state induced by spin flips and electron density rearrangement. We claim the 3/2 state is a locally incompressible fractional quantum Hall state.

Large violation of the flavour SU(3) symmetry in $η$MAID2018 isobar model

We demonstrate that the explanation of the neutron anomaly around $W\sim 1685$MeV in $γN\to ηN$ reactions provided by the $η$MAID2018 isobar model is based on large violation of the flavour SU(3) symmetry in hadron interactions. This is yet another example of how conventional explanation (without invoking exotic narrow nucleon resonance) of the neutron anomaly metamorphoses into unconventional physics picture of hadron interactions. A possibility to mend the flavour SU(3) symmetry for some of resonances in $η$MAID model is discussed.

Three-particle electron-hole complexes in two-dimensional electron systems

Three-particle complexes consisting of two holes in the completely filled zero electron Landau level and an excited electron in the unoccupied first Landau level are investigated in a quantum Hall insulator. The distinctive features of these three-particle complexes are an electron-hole mass symmetry and the small energy gap of the quantum Hall insulator itself. Theoretical calculations of the trion energy spectrum in a quantizing magnetic field predict that, besides the ground state, trions feature a hierarchy of excited bound states. In agreement with the theoretical simulations, we observe new photoluminescence lines related to the excited trion states. A relatively small energy gap allows the binding of three-particle complexes with magnetoplasma oscillations and formation of plasmarons. The plasmaron properties are investigated experimentally.

Artificially constructed plasmaron and plasmon-exciton molecule in 2D-metals

Resonant optical excitation was used to create a macroscopic non-equilibrium ensemble of dark excitons with unprecedentedly long lifetime in a two-dimensional (2D) electron system placed in a quantizing magnetic field. Exotic three-particle and four-particle states, plasmarons and plasmon-exciton molecules, coupled with the surrounding electrons through the collective plasma oscillations are engineered. Plasmarons and plasmon-exciton molecules are manifested as new features in the recombination spectra of non-equilibrium systems. Magnetoplasmarons and magnetotrions in a two-dimensional Hall insulator.

Search for narrow resonances in $πp$ elastic scattering from the EPECUR experiment

The analysis of high-precision $π^{\pm}p \to π^{\pm}p$ cross section data from the EPECUR Collaboration based on the multichannel $K$-matrix approach is presented. The sharp structures seen in these data are studied in terms of both opening thresholds and new resonance contributions. Some prominent features are found to be due to the opening $KΣ$ channel. However, a complete description of the data is improved with the addition of two narrow resonant structures at $W\sim 1.686$ and $W\sim 1.720$ GeV. These structures are interpreted as manifestations of $S_{11}$ and $P_{11}$ resonances. The underlying nature of the observed phenomena is discussed.

Demonstration of Communication using Neutrinos

Beams of neutrinos have been proposed as a vehicle for communications under unusual circumstances, such as direct point-to-point global communication, communication with submarines, secure communications and interstellar communication. We report on the performance of a low-rate communications link established using the NuMI beam line and the MINERvA detector at Fermilab. The link achieved a decoded data rate of 0.1 bits/sec with a bit error rate of 1% over a distance of 1.035 km, including 240 m of earth.

First CNGS events detected by LVD

The CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso (CNGS) project aims to produce a high energy, wide band $ν_μ$ beam at CERN and send it toward the INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS), 732 km away. Its main goal is the observation of the $ν_τ$ appearance, through neutrino flavour oscillation. The beam started its operation in August 2006 for about 12 days: a total amount of $7.6~10^{17}$ protons were delivered to the target. The LVD detector, installed in hall A of the LNGS and mainly dedicated to the study of supernova neutrinos, was fully operating during the whole CNGS running time. A total number of 569 events were detected in coincidence with the beam spill time. This is in good agreement with the expected number of events from Montecarlo simulations.

On-line recognition of supernova neutrino bursts in the LVD detector

In this paper we show the capabilities of the Large Volume Detector (INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratory) to identify a neutrino burst associated to a supernova explosion, in the absence of an "external trigger", e.g., an optical observation. We describe how the detector trigger and event selection have been optimized for this purpose, and we detail the algorithm used for the on-line burst recognition. The on-line sensitivity of the detector is defined and discussed in terms of supernova distance and electron anti-neutrino intensity at the source.

Study of the effect of neutrino oscillations on the supernova neutrino signal in the LVD detector

The LVD detector, located in the INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratory (Italy), studies supernova neutrinos through the interactions with protons and carbon nuclei in the liquid scintillator and interactions with the iron nuclei of the support structure. We investigate the effect of neutrino oscillations in the signal expected in the LVD detector. The MSW effect has been studied in detail for neutrinos travelling through the collapsing star and the Earth. We show that the expected number of events and their energy spectrum are sensitive to the oscillation parameters, in particular to the mass hierarchy and the value of $θ_{13}$, presently unknown. Finally we discuss the astrophysical uncertainties, showing their importance and comparing it with the effect of neutrino oscillations on the expected signal.

Tensor Ayy and vector Ay analyzing powers in the H(d,d')X and ^{12}C(d,d')X reactons at initial deuteron momenta of 9 GeV/c in the region of baryonic resonances excitation

The angular dependence of the tensor Ayy and vector Ay analyzing powers in the inelastic scattering of deuterons with a momentum of 9.0 GeV/c on hydrogen and carbon have been measured. The range of measurements corresponds to the baryonic resonance excitation with masses 2.2--2.6 GeV/c^2. The Ayy data being in good agreement with the previous results demonstrate an approximate $t$ scaling up to -1.5 (GeV/c)^2. The large values of A_y show a significant role of the spin-dependent part of the elementary amplitude of the NN->NN* reaction. The results of the experiment are compared with model predictions of the plane-wave impulse approximation.

Quasi-coherent interaction of protons with Si28 at Tp=1GeV

The total, elastic and inelastic cross-sections for quasi-coherent interactions of protons with Si28 have been measured using hadron-gamma coincidence method at the energy 1 GeV. The limits for the existence of long-lived excited states of the Si28 nucleus have been obtained in the range of energies from 0 to 0.8 GeV.
