The Hamburg/SAO survey for emission-line galaxies. VI. The sixth list of 126 galaxies

We present the sixth list with results of the Hamburg/SAO Survey for Emission-Line Galaxies. The final list resulted from follow-up spectroscopy conducted with the 4.5m MMT telescope in 1996, and with 2.2m CAHA and 6m SAO telescopes in 2000 to 2003. The data of this snap-shot spectroscopy survey confirmed 134 emission-line objects out of 182 observed candidates and allowed their quantitative spectral classification and redshift determination. We classify 73 emission-line objects as definite or probable blue compact or HII galaxies (BCG), 8 as QSOs, 4 as Seyfert 1 and 2 galaxies. 30 low-excitation objects were classified as definite or probable starburst nuclei (SBN), 3 as dwarf amorphous nuclei starburst galaxies (DANS) and 2 as LINERs. Due to the low signal-to-noise ratio we could not classify 14 ELGs (NON). For another 9 galaxies we did not detect any significant emission lines. For 98 emission-line galaxies, the redshifts and/or line intensities are determined for the first time. For the remaining 28 previously-known ELGs we give either improved data the line intensities or some independent measurements. The detection rate of ELGs is ~70%. This paper completes the classification of strong-lined ELGs found in the zone of the Hamburg/SAO survey. Together with previously known BCG/HII galaxies in this zone, this sample of ~500 objects is the largest to date in a well bound region.

Studies of galaxies in voids. I. HI observations of Blue Compact Galaxies

We present here results of studies of the properties of galaxies located in very low density environments. We observed 26 blue compact galaxies (BCGs) from the Second Byurakan (SBS) and Case surveys located in voids with the radial velocities V < 11000 km/s, two BCGs in the void behind the Virgo cluster and 11 BCGs in denser environments. HI fluxes and profile widths, as well as estimates of total HI masses, are presented for the 27 detected galaxies (of which 6 are in three galaxy pairs and are not resolved by the radiotelescope beam). Preliminary comparisons of void BCGs with similar objects from intermediate density regions - in the general field and the Local Supercluster (sub-samples of BCGs in the SBS zone) and in the dense environment of the Virgo Cluster (a BCD sample) - are performed using the hydrogen-to-blue-luminosity ratio M(HI)/L_B. We find that for the same blue luminosity, for M_B > -18.0, BCGs in lower density environment have on average more HI. The slope (beta) of the M(HI)/L_B proportional to L^(beta) for BCGs shows a trend of steepening with decreasing bright galaxy density, being very close to zero for the densest environment considered here and reaching (beta) = -0.4 for voids.

The Hamburg/SAO Survey for Emission--Line Galaxies. V. The Fifth List of 161 Galaxies

We present the fifth list with results of the Hamburg/SAO Survey for Emission-Line Galaxies (HSS therein, SAO -- Special Astrophysical Observatory, Russia). The list is a result of follow-up spectroscopy conducted with the 2.2m CAHA and 4m Kitt Peak telescopes in 1999. The data of this snap-shot spectroscopy survey confirmed 166 emission-line objects out of 209 observed candidates and allowed their quantitative spectral classification and redshift determination. We could classify 98 emission-line objects as BCG/HII galaxies or probable BCGs, 5 -- as QSOs, 3 - as Seyfert galaxies, 2 - as super-associations in subluminous spiral galaxies. 25 low-excitation objects were classified as starburst nuclei (SBN), 24 as dwarf amorphous nuclei starburst galaxies (DANS) and 3 as LINERs. Due to low signal-to-noise ratio we could not classify 6 ELGs. Furthermore, for another 4 galaxies we did not detect any significant emission lines. For 131 emission-line galaxies, the redshifts and/or line intensities are determined for the first time. For the remaining 30 previously known ELGs we give either improved data of the line intensities or some independent measurements.

Environment status of blue compact galaxies and trigger of star formation

(abridged) The work studies active star formation (SF) and a possible trigger of SF bursts due to gravitational interaction. Following the study by Taylor et al. we extend the search for possible disturbing galaxies of various masses to a much larger sample of 86 BCGs from the sky region of Second Byurakan survey. The sample under study is separated by the criteria: EW([O III]5007 > 45 A and V < 6,000 km/s and should be representative of all low-mass galaxies which experience SF bursts. We argue that the moderate tidal disturbers should be taken into account, and incorporate the respective range of distances in the search for disturbing neighbours. The majority of the neighbours in the vicinity of the studied BCGs are found through the study of their environment among UZC galaxies, and the follow-up careful search of the fainter galaxies in the NED database. For the remaining BCGs, the neighbouring galaxies are found based on the results of the 6-m telescope spectroscopy. By studing the data on the radial velocities of galaxies in the vicinity of BCGs we found: 1) 33 of the studied BCGs (38.5 %) are associated with significantly brighter galaxies (DB > 1.5 mag); 2) 23 BCGs (26.5%) have neighbours either of comparable or significantly lower brightness; 3) 14 of the studied BCGs (16%) with no evident associated galaxy are either certain, or probable, mergers. We conclude that in \~80% (or more) BCGs from the studied sample, the SF bursts are triggered either by tidal action of various strengths from other galaxies, or due to mergers of low-mass galaxies. We briefly discuss the implications of our main conclusion for evolutionary links of BCGs to other types of low-mass galaxies. Among the ``isolated'' BCGs (without a bright neighbour) 43+-10% are probably disturbed by dwarf galaxies and 26+-8% have a merger morphology.

The Hamburg/SAO Survey for Emission--Line Galaxies. IV. The Fourth List of 119 Galaxies

We present the fourth list with results of the Hamburg/SAO Survey for Emission-Line Galaxies (HSS hereafter, SAO - Special Astrophysical Observatory, Russia). The list is a result of the follow-up spectroscopy conducted with the 6m SAO RAS telescope in 1998, 1999 and 2000. The data of this snap-shot spectroscopy survey confirmed 127 emission-line objects out of 176 observed candidates and allowed their quantitative spectral classification. We could classify 76 emission-line objects as BCG/HII galaxies or probable BCGs, 8 - as QSOs, 2 - as Seyfert galaxies, 2 - as super-associations in a subluminous spiral and an irregular galaxy, and 37 as low-excitation objects - either starburst nuclei (SBN), or dwarf amorphous nuclei starburst galaxies (DANS). We could not classify 2 ELGs. Furthermore, for 5 galaxies we did not detect any significant emission lines. For 91 emission-line galaxies, the redshifts and/or line intensities are determined for the first time. Of the remaining 28 previously known ELGs we give either improved data on the line intensities or some independent measurements. The candidates were taken from three different samples selected by different criteria. Among our first priority candidates we achieved a detection rate of emission-line objects (ELGs + QSOs) of 68%, among which 51% are BCGs. Observations of a random selected sample among our second priority candidates showed that only ~10% are BCGs. We found that the confirmed BCGs have usually a blue colour ((B-R) < 1.0) and a non-stellar appearance in the APM database. Our third sample is comprised of second priority candidates fulfilling these criteria derived from the APM. Follow-up spectroscopy of a small subsample indicates that the expected detection rate for BCGs is ~40%.

VLA HI Line Observations of the Extremely Metal-Poor Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxy SBS 0335-052

We present the results of HI mapping with the NRAO VLA of one of the most metal-deficient blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies known, SBS 0335-052, with an oxygen abundance of only 1/40 that of the Sun. We study the structure and dynamics of the neutral gas in this chemically young object with a spatial resolution of 20.5"x15" (~ 5.4 x 3.9 kpc at an assumed distance of 54.3 Mpc), a sensitivity at the 2sigma detection level of ~2.0K or 7.5x10^19 cm^-2 and a velocity resolution of 21.2 km s^-1. We detected a large HI complex associated with this object with an overall size of about 66 by 22 kpc and elongated in the East-West direction. There are two prominent, slightly resolved peaks visible in the integrated HI map, separated in the East-West direction by 22 kpc (84"). The eastern peak is nearly coincident with the position of the optical galaxy SBS 0335-052. The western peak is about a factor of 1.3 brighter in the HI line and is identified with a faint blue compact dwarf galaxy, SBS 0335-052W, with m_B = 19.4, and a metallicity close to the lowest values known for BCDs, about 1/50 that of the Sun. The radial velocities of both systems are similar, suggesting that the two BCDs SBS 0335-052 and SBS 0335-052W constitute a pair of dwarf galaxies embedded in a common HI envelope. Alternatively, the BCDs can be the nuclei of two distinct interacting primordial HI clouds. The estimated total dynamical mass, assuming the BCDs form a bound system, is larger than 6x10^9 Msun. This is to be compared to a total gaseous mass M_gas = 2.1x10^9 Msun, and a total stellar mass Mstar < 10^8 Msun. Hence, the mass of the SBS 0335-052 system is dominated by dark matter (abridged).

The KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey. II. H-alpha Selected Survey List 1

The KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS) is a new objective-prism survey for extragalactic emission-line objects. It combines many of the features of previous slitless spectroscopic surveys with the advantages of modern CCD detectors, and is the first purely digital objective-prism survey for emission-line galaxies. Here we present the first list of emission-line galaxy candidates selected from our red spectral data, which cover the spectral range 6400 to 7200 Angstroms. In most cases, the detected emission line is H-alpha. The current survey list covers a one-degree-wide strip located at Dec (1950) = 29.5 degrees and spanning the RA range 12h 15m to 17h 0m. An area of 62.2 sq. degrees is covered. A total of 1128 candidate emission-line objects have been selected for inclusion in the survey list (18.1 per sq. degree). We tabulate accurate coordinates and photometry for each source, as well as estimates of the redshift and emission-line flux and equivalent width based on measurements of the digital objective-prism spectra. The properties of the KISS emission-line galaxies are examined using the available observational data.

The KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey. I. Description of the Survey

The KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS) is a new objective-prism survey for extragalactic emission-line objects. It combines many of the features of previous slitless spectroscopic surveys that were carried out with Schmidt telescopes using photographic plates with the advantages of modern CCD detectors. It is the first purely digital objective-prism survey, and extends previous photographic surveys to substantially fainter flux limits. In this, the first paper in the series, we give an overview of the survey technique, describe our data processing procedures, and present examples of the types of objects found by KISS. Our first H-alpha-selected survey list detects objects at the rate of 18.1 per square degree, which is 181 times higher than the surface density of the Markarian survey.Since the sample is line-selected, there is an imposed redshift limit of z ~ 0.095 due to the filter employed for the objective-prism observations. We evaluate the quality of the observed parameters derived from the survey data, which include accurate astrometry, photometry, redshifts, and line fluxes. Finally, we describe some of the many applications the KISS database will have for addressing specific questions in extragalactic astronomy. Subsequent papers in this series will present our survey lists of emission-line galaxy candidates.

HS 0822+3542 - a new nearby extremely metal-poor galaxy

We present the results of spectrophotometry and BVR CCD photometry, as well as integrated HI radio measurements of a new blue compact galaxy (BCG) HS 0822+3542 with extremely low oxygen abundance: 12+log(O/H) = 7.35, or 1/36 of solar value. The galaxy is the third most metal-deficient BCG after I Zw 18 and SBS 0335-052. Its very high mass fraction of gas (~95% of all visible mass) and blue colours of underlying nebulosity are also similar to those of SBS 0335-052. This suggests that HS 0822+3542 is one of the nearest and dimmest galaxies experiencing a recently-started first star formation (SF) episode. Its properties imply that for such galaxies there is a linear scaling of the main parameters, at least for the baryon mass range (0.3-20)x10^8 M_sun. The total mass estimate indicates that the galaxy is dynamically dominated by a dark matter (DM) halo, which itself is one of the least massive for galaxies.

The Hamburg/SAO Survey for Emission-Line Galaxies. III. The Third List of 81 Galaxies

We present the third list with results {Tables 2 to 6 are available only in electronic form at the CDS via anonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or via http://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.html. Figures A1 to A9 will be made available only in the electronic version of the journal.} of the Hamburg/SAO Survey for Emission-Line Galaxies (HSS therein, SAO - Special Astrophysical Observatory, Russia). This survey is based on the digitized objective-prism photoplate database of the Hamburg Quasar Survey (HQS). Here, we present new spectroscopic results of candidates which were obtained in 1998 with the 2.1 m KPNO and the 2.2 m Calar Alto telescopes. All candidates are selected in the declination band +35$^{\circ}$ to +40$^{\circ}$. The follow-up spectroscopy with the 2 m class telescopes confirmed 85 emission-line objects out of 113 observed candidates and allowed their quantitative spectral classification. For 80 of them, the redshifts are determined for the first time. For 5 previously known ELGs, line ratios are presented for the first time. We could classify 55 out of the 85 emission-line objects as BCG/H{\sc ii} galaxies or probable BCGs, 4 - as QSOs, 6 - as Seyfert galaxies, 1 - as super-association in a subluminous spiral galaxy, and 11 are low-excitation objects - either starburst nuclear (SBN), or dwarf amorphous nuclear starburst galaxies (DANS). We could not classify 8 ELGs. Further, for 8 more galaxies we did not detect any significant emission lines.

SBS 0335-052W - an Extremely Low Metallicity Dwarf Galaxy

We present Multiple Mirror Telescope (MMT) and Keck II telescope spectrophotometry and 3.5m Calar Alto telescope R, I photometry of the western component of the extremely low-metallicity blue compact galaxy SBS 0335-052. The components, separated by 22 kpc, appear to be members of a unique, physically connected system. It is shown that SBS 0335-052W consists of at least three stellar clusters and has the same redshift as SBS 0335-052. The oxygen abundance in its two brightest knots is extremely low, 12+log(O/H)= 7.22+/-0.03 and 7.13+/-0.08, respectively. These values are lower than in SBS 0335-052 and are nearly the same as those in I Zw 18. The (R-I) color profiles are very blue in both galaxies due to the combined effects of ionized gas and a young stellar population emission. We argue that SBS 0335-052W is likely to be a nearby, young dwarf galaxy.

SBS 0335-052W - a new, extremely low metallicity dwarf galaxy

It is shown that SBS 0335-052W has the same redshift as SBS 0335-052 and has an extremely low oxygen abundance, 12 + log (O/H) = 7.45+-0.22, comparable to those in I Zw 18 and SBS 0335--052. The (R-I) color profiles are very blue in both galaxies due to the combined effect of ionized gas and a young stellar population. We argue that SBS 0335--052W is likely to be a nearby young dwarf galaxy with age not exceeding 10^8 yr. The implications of this conclusion to the question of galaxy formation and to the properties of primeval dwarf galaxies are discussed.

HST observations of the blue compact dwarf SBS 0335-052: a probable young galaxy

We present HST WFPC2 V and I images and GHRS UV spectrophotometry of the spectral regions around Ly$_alpha$ and OI 1302 of the extremely metal-deficient (Z~Zsun/41) blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy SBS 0335-052. All the star formation in the BCD occurs in six super-star clusters (SSC) with ages =< 3-4 Myr. Dust is clearly present and mixed spatially with the SSCs. There is a supershell of radius ~380 pc, delineating a large supernova cavity. The instantaneous star formation rate is ~0.4 Msun yr^-1. Strong narrow Ly$α$ emission is not observed. Rather there is low intensity broad (FWZI = 20 A) Ly$α$ emission superposed on even broader Ly$α$ absorption by the HI envelope. This broad low-intensity emission is probably caused by resonant scattering of Ly$α$ photons. The BCD appears to be a young galaxy, undergoing its very first burst of star formation. This conclusion is based on the following evidence: 1) the underlying extended low-surface-brightness component is very irregular and filamentary, suggesting that a significant part of the emission comes from ionized gas; 2) it has very blue colors (-0.34 =< (V-I)$_0$ =< 0.16), consistent with gaseous emission colors; 3) the OI 1302 line is not detected in absorption in the GHRS spectrum, setting an upper limit for N(O)/N(H) in the HI envelope of the BCD of more than 3000 times smaller than the value in Orion.

SBS 0335-052, a probable nearby young dwarf galaxy: evidence pro and con

The results of Multiple Mirror Telescope spectrophotometry of the extremely low-metallicity blue compact galaxy (BCG) SBS 0335-052 are presented. The oxygen abundance in central brightest part of the galaxy is found to be 12 + log(O/H) = 7.33+-0.01. The N/O, Ne/O, S/O and Ar/O abundance ratios are close to those derived in other BCGs, suggesting that heavy element enrichment in the HII region is due to massive star evolution. We detect auroral [OIII] 4363 emission in the inner part of HII region with a diameter of 3.6 kpc and find that the HII region inside this diameter is hot, T_e~20000K. The oxygen abundance in this region is nearly constant (12 + log(O/H) = 7.1 - 7.3), implying effective mixing of ionized gas on short time-scales. We also discuss the origin of blue underlying extended low-intensity emission detected in SBS 0335-052. The (V-I) and (R-I) color distributions suggest that a significant contribution to the extended envelope is due to ionized gas emission. However, the observed equivalent width of Hbeta emission in the extended envelope is 2-3 times lower than the value expected in the case of pure gaseous emission. These findings suggest that, along with the blue young (~10^7yr) stellar clusters, an older stellar population with age ~10^8yr may be present in the extended envelope of SBS 0335-052, having a total mass conclude that SBS 0335-052 is a young nearby dwarf galaxy with age ~10^8 yr.

A new family of non--linear filters for background subtraction of wide--field surveys

In this paper the definitions and the properties of a newle dedicated set of high-frequency filters based on smoothing-and-clipping are briefly described. New applications for reduction of wide--field 2048x2048 CCD spectral and direct images of a new deep survey KISS (KPNO International Spectral Survey) are also presented. The developed software is available both as a C subroutine and as an installed MIDAS environment command.

Detection of a Second Optical Component in the HI cloud associated with the Young Dwarf Galaxy SBS 0335-052: New Data from the 6--m Telescope

The Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxy SBS 0335--052 is one of the most metal--deficient galaxies known and one of the best candidates for a young dwarf galaxy in the process of formation. A VLA HI map reveals an unusual structure: the neutral gas is distributed in a very extended disk, about 15 times larger than the Holmberg optical diameter of the BCG. There are two peaks of high density. The eastern peak is close to the position of SBS 0335--052 whereas the western HI peak is associated with a faint compact optical galaxy. A 6--m telescope spectrum of this object shows Halpha, Hbeta, and [OIII] 5007 emission with a redshift close to that of SBS 0335--052. We suggest that it may be a young and chemically unevolved dwarf galaxy.
