Magnetic circular dichroism of THz modes and selection rules of Raman-active optical phonons in the polar altermagnet candidate \ce{Mn2Mo3O8}

We investigated the magnetic and vibrational excitations in the collinear altermagnet candidate \ce{Mn2Mo3O8} by temperature dependent Raman scattering and magneto-optical THz time-domain transmission spectroscopy. By comparison to \textit{ab initio} calculations accurately capturing the eigenfrequencies of the vibrational eigenmodes, we identify all optical phonons, including the lowest-lying Raman modes of $A_1$ and $E_2$ type, which had remained elusive in a previous Raman study. Moreover, we compare the selection rules for optically active phonons in the paramagnetic and the magnetically ordered phases of \ce{Mn2Mo3O8} and analyze the Raman selection rules with respect to pseudo-angular momentum conservation. No evidence of the expected splitting of the degenerate paramagnetic $E_2$ optical phonons into modes with circular polarization upon magnetic ordering could be resolved, likely due to weak spin-orbit coupling typical for Mn$^{2+}$. In contrast, we observe strong magnetic circular dichroism at a broad THz excitation band, emerging in the magnetically ordered state. This band, potentially originating from two-magnon excitations, is only electric-dipole active and features a field-dependent two-component fine structure. Its magnetic circular dichroism vanishes above the spin-flop transition at 4~T.

Large magnon dichroism and other optical properties of hexagonal ferrite h-Lu0.6Sc0.4FeO3 with altermagnetic A2 spin ordering

Multiferroic hexagonal h-Lu0.6Sc0.4FeO3 single crystals with non-collinear spins were studied using the THz and Raman scattering spectroscopies and ellipsometry. Antiferromagnetic resonances, or magnons, were found at about 0.85 THz and 1.2 THz. These magnons harden as temperature increases and disappear above 130 K. This behavior is consistent with the magnetic susceptibility and a phase transition to a previously reported weak ferromagnetic state. A strong dichroism at the resonance with the AFM doublet has been observed at zero external magnetic field using both conventional circular polarization and THz vector vortex beams. This observation is attributed to the strong altermagnetic properties of h-Lu0.6Sc0.4FeO3 with a broken PT symmetry. The splitting of the magnon doublet in an external magnetic field applied long the c axis yields a g-factor of 3.0 for the Fe3+ ions. Raman spectra of the optical phonons revealed a Fano-type asymmetry due to their interaction with a continuum of polar excitations. Electronic transitions were studied with ellipsometry and the results were compared with the modelled using DFT+eDMFT.

Ferroaxial phonons in chiral and polar NiCo2TeO6

Perfect circular dichroism has been observed in the Raman scattering by the optical phonons in single chiral domain NiCo2TeO6 crystals. The selection rules for the optical phonons are determined by the combination of the chiral structure C and the electric polarization P along the c-axis. These two symmetry operations are equivalent to the ferroaxial order (C dot P) = A, so the observed optical phonons are referred to as "ferroaxial". For a given Raman scattering geometry the observed effect may also be described as a complete non-reciprocal propagation of the optical phonons, whose preferable vector direction is determined by the sign of C dot P. The combination of Raman scattering and polarization plane rotation of the transmitted white light allows for identification of the direction of electric polarization P in mono domain chiral crystals.

Optical conductivity and vibrational spectra of the narrow-gap semiconductor FeGa$_3$

Intermetallic narrow-gap semiconductors have been intensively explored due to their large thermoelectric power at low temperatures and a possible role of strong electronic correlations in their unusual thermodynamic and transport properties. Here we study the optical spectra and vibrational properties of $\mathrm{FeGa_3}$ single crystal. The optical conductivity indicates that $\mathrm{FeGa_3}$ has a direct band gap of $\sim 0.7$\,eV, consistent with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Most importantly, we find a substantial spectral weight also below 0.4~eV, which is the energy of the indirect (charge) gap found in resistivity measurements and ab initio calculations. We find that the spectral weight below the gap decreases with increasing temperature, which indicates that it originates from the impurity states and not from the electronic correlations. Interestingly, we did not find any signatures of the impurity states in vibrational spectra. The infrared and Raman vibrational lines are narrow and weakly temperature dependent. The vibrational frequencies are in excellent agreement with our DFT calculations, implying a modest role of electronic correlations. Narrow M\" ossbauer spectral lines also indicate high crystallinity of the sample.

Filling an emulsion drop with motile bacteria

We have measured the spatial distribution of motile Escherichia coli inside spherical water droplets emulsified in oil. At low cell concentrations, the cell density peaks at the water-oil interface; at increasing concentration, the bulk of each droplet fills up uniformly while the surface peak remains. Simulations and theory show that the bulk density results from a `traffic' of cells leaving the surface layer, increasingly due to cell-cell scattering as the surface coverage rises above $\sim 10\%$. Our findings show similarities with the physics of a rarefied gas in a spherical cavity with attractive walls.

Enhanced diffusion of nonswimmers in a three-dimensional bath of motile bacteria

We show, using differential dynamic microscopy, that the diffusivity of non-motile cells in a three-dimensional (3D) population of motile E. coli is enhanced by an amount proportional to the active cell flux. While non-motile mutants without flagella and mutants with paralysed flagella have quite different thermal diffusivities and therefore hydrodynamic radii, their diffusivities are enhanced to the same extent by swimmers in the regime of cell densities explored here. Integrating the advective motion of non-swimmers caused by swimmers with finite persistence-length trajectories predicts our observations to within 2%, indicating that fluid entrainment is not relevant for diffusion enhancement in 3D.

Dynamics of hard-sphere suspension using Dynamic Light Scattering and X-Ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy: dynamics and scaling of the Intermediate Scattering Function

Intermediate Scattering Functions (ISF's) are measured for colloidal hard sphere systems using both Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (XPCS). We compare the techniques, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each. Both techniques agree in the overlapping range of scattering vectors. We investigate the scaling behaviour found by Segre and Pusey [1] but challenged by Lurio et al. [2]. We observe a scaling behaviour over several decades in time but not in the long time regime. Moreover, we do not observe long time diffusive regimes at scattering vectors away from the peak of the structure factor and so question the existence of a long time diffusion coefficients at these scattering vectors.

Ageing dynamics of colloidal hard sphere glasses

We report results of dynamic light scattering measurements of the coherent intermediate scattering function (ISF) of glasses of hard spheres for several volume fractions and a range of scattering vectors around the primary maximum of the static structure factor. The ISF shows a clear crossover from an initial fast decay to a slower non-stationary decay. Ageing is quantified in several different ways. However, regardless of the method chosen, the perfect "aged" glass is approached in a power-law fashion. In particular, the coupling between the fast and slow decays, as measured by the degree of stretching of the ISF at the crossover, also decreases algebraically with waiting time. The non-stationarity of this coupling implies that even the fastest detectable processes are themselves non-stationary.

Arrest of flow and emergence of activated processes at the glass transition of a suspension of particles with hard sphere-like interactions

By combining aspects of the coherent and self intermediate scattering functions, measured by dynamical light scattering on a suspension of hard sphere-like particles, we show that the arrest of particle number density fluctuations spreads from the position of the main structure factor peak. Taking the velocity auto-correlation function into account we propose that as density fluctuations are arrested the system's ability to respond to diffusing momentum currents is impaired and, accordingly, the viscosity increases. From the stretching of the coherent intermediate scattering function we read a quantitative manifestation of the undissipated thermal energy, the source of those, ergodicity restoring, processes that short-circuit the sharp transition to a perfect glass.
