The Physics Programme Of The MoEDAL Experiment At The LHC

The MoEDAL experiment at Point 8 of the LHC ring is the seventh and newest LHC experiment. It is dedicated to the search for highly ionizing particle avatars of physics beyond the Standard Model, extending significantly the discovery horizon of the LHC. A MoEDAL discovery would have revolutionary implications for our fundamental understanding of the Microcosm. MoEDAL is an unconventional and largely passive LHC detector comprised of the largest array of Nuclear Track Detector stacks ever deployed at an accelerator, surrounding the intersection region at Point 8 on the LHC ring. Another novel feature is the use of paramagnetic trapping volumes to capture both electrically and magnetically charged highly-ionizing particles predicted in new physics scenarios. It includes an array of TimePix pixel devices for monitoring highly-ionizing particle backgrounds. The main passive elements of the MoEDAL detector do not require a trigger system, electronic readout, or online computerized data acquisition. The aim of this paper is to give an overview of the MoEDAL physics reach, which is largely complementary to the programs of the large multi-purpose LHC detectors ATLAS and CMS.

Histogram comparison as a powerful tool for the search of new physics at LHC. Application to CMSSM

We propose a rigorous and effective way to compare experimental and theoretical histograms, incorporating the different sources of statistical and systematic uncertainties. This is a useful tool to extract as much information as possible from the comparison between experimental data with theoretical simulations, optimizing the chances of identifying New Physics at the LHC. We illustrate this by showing how a search in the CMSSM parameter space, using Bayesian techniques, can effectively find the correct values of the CMSSM parameters by comparing histograms of events with multijets + missing transverse momentum displayed in the effective-mass variable. The procedure is in fact very efficient to identify the true supersymmetric model, in the case supersymmetry is really there and accessible to the LHC.

ATLAS silicon module assembly and qualification tests at IFIC Valencia

ATLAS experiment, designed to probe the interactions of particles emerging out of proton proton collisions at energies of up to 14 TeV, will assume operation at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in 2007. This paper discusses the assembly and the quality control tests of forward detector modules for the ATLAS silicon microstrip detector assembled at the Instituto de Fisica Corpuscular (IFIC) in Valencia. The construction and testing procedures are outlined and the laboratory equipment is briefly described. Emphasis is given on the module quality achieved in terms of mechanical and electrical stability.

Confronting Dark Energy Models with Astrophysical Data: Non-Equilibrium vs. Conventional Cosmologies

We discuss fits of cosmological dark energy models to the available data on high-redshift supernovae. We consider a conventional model with Cold Dark Matter and a cosmological constant (LambdaCDM), a model invoking super-horizon perturbations (SHCDM) and models based on Liouville strings in which dark energy is provided by a rolling dilaton field (Q-cosmology). We show that a complete treatment of Q-cosmology requires a careful discussion of non-equilibrium situations (off-shell effects). The two main high-redshift supernova data sets give compatible constraints on LambdaCDM and the other models. We recover the well-known result that LambdaCDM fits very well the combined supernova data sets, as does the super-horizon model. We discuss the model-dependent off-shell corrections to the Q-cosmology model that are relevant to the supernova data, and show that this model fits the data equally well. This analysis could be extended to other aspects of cosmological phenomenology, in particular to the CMB and Baryon Acoustic Oscillations, which have so far been treated using on-shell models.

Prospects for Scalar Leptoquark Discovery at the LHC

The discovery potential of the ATLAS detector for scalar leptoquark pair production at the LHC is discussed in this paper. The study is performed using a parameterized yet realistic simulation of the ATLAS detector response for the signal and the background. The channel LQLQ->(lq)(lq),where l=e,mu, is investigated for the first two generations and the decay mode LQLQ->(nu_tau b)(nu_tau b) for the third one. In both cases, a preliminary mass reach is found to be ~1.3 TeV for three years of LHC running at low luminosity.

The ATLAS Transition Radiation Tracker

The Transition Radiation Tracker is a combined tracking and electron identification detector, which is part of the ATLAS Inner Detector at the CERN LHC. Tracking is carried out by drift tubes, while the interleaved radiators produce detectable X-rays when electrons traverse them. The status of the construction and quality control tests will be discussed. The results of beam tests performed on detector prototypes and the expected performance in ATLAS will also be reviewed.

Search for new physics with ATLAS at the LHC

Due to the high energy and luminosity of the LHC, the ATLAS experiment has a huge discovery potential for new physics. A Standard Model Higgs boson can be discovered over the full range of allowed masses, and its mass should be measured with a precision of about 0.1%. The Higgs sector of the MSSM should be fully explored by searches for supersymmetric Higgs bosons. Squarks and gluinos can be discovered up to masses of 2.5 TeV and several precision measurements can be performed in the SUSY sector. The existence of particles predicted by other theories beyond the Standard Model has been also investigated.
