Once more on extra quark-lepton generations and precision measurements

Precision measurements of $Z$-boson parameters and $W$-boson and $t$-quark masses put strong constraints on non $SU(2)\times U(1)$ singlet New Physics. We demonstrate that one extra generation passes electroweak constraints even when all new particle masses are well above their direct mass bounds.

Quadrupolar contact terms and Hyperfine Structure

In the interaction of two electric quadrupoles, there is at short distances a contact term proportional to the second derivative of a delta function. This contact term contributes to the hyperfine splitting of bound states of two particles with spin one or higher-for example the bound states of Omega minus and a nucleus of spin one.The contact hyperfine splitting occurs in states with orbital angular momentum one(p-wave), in contrast to the Fermi contact interaction which is in s-states.We find that these contact splittings will be observable with Omega minus atoms and help measure the quadrupole moment and charge radius of the hyperon.

Binary systems in QM and in QFT: CPT

Quasi-degenerate neutral systems like a (K, \bar{K}) type are investigated in Quantum Field Theory (QFT). A constant mass matrix as the one used in Quantum Mechanics (QM) can only be introduced as a linear approximation to QFT. We study the phenomenological consequences of the differences between the QFT and QM treatments. The role of ``spurious'' states with zero norm at the poles is emphasized. The K_L-K_S mass splitting triggers a tiny difference between the CP violating parameters ε_L and ε_S, without any violation of TCP. Non-vanishing semi-leptonic asymmetry delta_S - δ_L does not signal TCP violation (usual claims not withstanding), while A_{TCP} keeps vanishing when TCP is good symmetry.

Binary systems of neutral mesons in Quantum Field Theory

Quasi-degenerate binary systems of neutral mesons of the kaon type are investigated in Quantum Field Theory (QFT). General constraints cast by analyticity and discrete symmetries P, C, CP, TCP on the propagator (and on its spectral function) are deduced. Its poles are the physical masses; this unambiguously defines the propagating eigenstates. It is diagonalized and its spectrum thoroughly investigated. The role of ``spurious'' states, of zero norm at the poles, is emphasized, in particular for unitarity and for the realization of TCP symmetry. The K_L-K_S mass splitting triggers a tiny difference between their CP violating parameters ε_L and ε_S, without any violation of TCP. A constant mass matrix like used in Quantum Mechanics (QM) can only be introduced in a linear approximation to the inverse propagator, which respects its analyticity and positivity properties; it is however unable to faithfully describe all features of neutral mesons as we determine them in QFT, nor to provide any sensible parameterization of eventual effects of TCP violation. The suitable way to diagonalize the propagator makes use of a bi-orthogonal basis; it is inequivalent to a bi-unitary transformation (unless the propagator is normal, which cannot occur here). Problems linked with the existence of different ``in'' and ``out'' eigenstates are smoothed out. We study phenomenological consequences of the differences between the QFT and QM treatments. The non-vanishing of semi-leptonic asymmetry δ_S - δ_L does not signal, unlike usually claimed, TCP violation, while A_TCP keeps vanishing when TCP is realized. We provide expressions invariant by the rephasing of K0 and K0bar.

Progress in Classical and Quantum Variational Principles

We review the development and practical uses of a generalized Maupertuis least action principle in classical mechanics, in which the action is varied under the constraint of fixed mean energy for the trial trajectory. The original Maupertuis (Euler-Lagrange) principle constrains the energy at every point along the trajectory. The generalized Maupertuis principle is equivalent to Hamilton's principle. Reciprocal principles are also derived for both the generalized Maupertuis and the Hamilton principles. The Reciprocal Maupertuis Principle is the classical limit of Schrödinger's variational principle of wave mechanics, and is also very useful to solve practical problems in both classical and semiclassical mechanics, in complete analogy with the quantum Rayleigh-Ritz method. Classical, semiclassical and quantum variational calculations are carried out for a number of systems, and the results are compared. Pedagogical as well as research problems are used as examples, which include nonconservative as well as relativistic systems.

Z-lineshape versus 4th generation masses

The dependence of the Z-resonance shape on the location of the threshold of the N\bar{N} production (N is the 4th generation neutrino) is analyzed. The bounds on the existence of 4th generation are derived from the comparison of the theoretical expression for the Z-lineshape with the experimental data. The 4th generation is excluded at 95% C. L. for m_N<46.7\pm 0.2 GeV.

Mass of the higgs versus fourth generation masses

The predicted value of the higgs mass $m_H$ is analyzed assuming the existence of the fourth generation of leptons ($N, E$) and quarks ($U, D$). The steep and flat directions are found in the five-dimensional parameter space: $m_H$, $m_U$, $m_D$, $m_N$, $m_E$. The LEPTOP fit of the precision electroweak data is compatible (in particular) with $m_H \sim 300$ GeV, $m_N \sim 50$ GeV, $m_E \sim 100$ GeV, $m_U +m_D \sim 500$ GeV, and $|m_U -m_D| \sim 75$ GeV. The quality of fits drastically improves when the data on b- and c-quark asymmetries and new NuTeV data on deep inelastic scattering are ignored.

Extra Generations, Discrepancies of Electroweak Precision Data and Mass of the Higgs

The latest electroweak precision data are analyzed assuming the existence of the fourth generation of leptons ($N, E$) and quarks ($U, D$), which are not mixed with the known three generations. If all four new particles are heavier than $Z$ boson, quality of the fit for the one new generation is as good as for the Standard Model. In the case of neutral leptons with masses around 50 GeV (``partially heavy extra generations'') the minimum of $χ^2$ is between one and two extra generations. The predicted value of the higgs mass $m_H$ in the presence of the fourth generation can be made rather large. The quality of fits drastically improves when the data on b- and c-quark asymmetries and new NuTeV data on deep inelastic scattering are ignored.

Extra generations and discrepancies of electroweak precision data

It is shown that additional chiral generations are not excluded by the latest electroweak precision data if one assumes that there is no mixing with the known three generations. In the case of ``heavy extra generations'', when all four new particles are heavier than $Z$ boson, quality of the fit for the one new generation is as good as for zero new generations (Standard Model). In the case of neutral leptons with masses around 50 GeV (``partially heavy extra generations'') the minimum of $χ^2$ is between one and two extra generations.

On the production of a lepton pair in the collision of ultrarelativistic neutral particle with nonzero magnetic moment with nuclei

Explicit formulas which describe muon pair production in reaction $γν\to μ^+ μ^- ν$ through neutrino magnetic moment are obtained and used to derive in the leading approximation cross section of muon pair production in $νN$-scattering due to neutrino magnetic moment. This cross section appears to be proportional to $\log^4 E_ν$. Comparison with experimental data on tridents production provides an upper bound $μ_{ν_μ} < 4*10^{-8} μ_B$, which is approximately two orders of magnitude weaker than that from $ν_μe$ elastic scattering data.

Precision measurements, extra generations and heavy neutrino

The existence of extra chiral generations with all fermions heavier than $M_Z$ is strongly disfavored by the precision electroweak data. The exclusion of one additional generation of heavy fermions in SUSY extension of Standard Model is less forbidden if chargino and neutralino have low degenerate masses with $Δm \simeq 1$ GeV. However the data are fitted nicely even by a few extra generations, if one allows neutral leptons to have masses close to 50 GeV. Such heavy neutrino can be searched in the reaction $e^+ e^- \to N\bar{N}γ$ at LEP-200 with total final luminosity of $2600 pb^{-1}$.

On the search for 50 GeV neutrinos

Using the computer code CompHEP we estimate the number of events and the background, at LEP II and TESLA, for the reaction $e^+ e^- \to N\bar{N}γ$, where $N$ is a hypothetical Dirac neutrino with mass of the order of 50 GeV.

Extra quark-lepton generations and precision measurements

The existence of extra chiral generations with all fermions heavier than M_Z is strongly disfavoured by the precision electroweak data. However the data are fitted nicely even by a few extra generations, if one allows neutral leptons to have masses close to 50 GeV. The data allow inclusion of one additional generation of heavy fermions in SUSY extension of Standard Model if chargino and neutralino have masses close to 60 GeV with Δm =~ 1 GeV.

Enhanced electroweak radiative corrections in SUSY and precision data

Enhanced radiative corrections generated in SUSY extensions of the Standard Model make the fit of the precision data ($Z$-boson decay parameters and $W$-boson mass) worse. This negative effect is washed out for heavy enough squarks due to decoupling property of SUSY models. We find that even for light squarks the enhanced radiative corrections can be small. In this case substantial $\tilde{t}_L \tilde{t}_R$ mixing is necessary.

Theory of Z boson decays

The precision data on Z boson decays from LEP-I and SLC colliders are compared with the predictions based on the Minimal Standard Theory. The Born approximation of the theory is based on three most accurately known observables: G_mu -- the four fermion coupling constant of muon decay, m_Z -- the mass of the Z boson, and alpha(m_Z) -- the value of the running fine structure constant at the scale of m_Z. The electroweak loop corrections are expressed, in addition, in terms of the masses of higgs, m_H, of the top and bottom quarks, m_t and m_b, and of the strong interaction constant alpha_s(m_Z). The main emphasis of the review is focused on the one-electroweak-loop approximation. Two electroweak loops have been calculated in the literature only partly. Possible manifestations of new physics are briefly discussed.

Enhanced Electroweak Radiative Corrections in SUSY: Gluon-free Observables

Large top quark mass is responsible for the enhancement of the oblique radiative corrections in SUSY models. We present the analytical formulas for these corrections to the $W$-boson mass $m_W$ and to $Z$ $l^+ l^-$ coupling constants. The comparison with the result of the Standard Model fit is made.

LEP, SLC and the Standard Model

A simple way of deriving and analyzing electroweak radiative corrections to the $Z$ boson decays is presented in the framework of the Standard Model. This paper is an updated and revised version of a plenary talk given at the Second Sakharov Conference; Lebedev Physical Institute, Moscow, May 20-24, 1996.
