Hadron interactions in the U-70 energy range: results and problems

From late 1967 until the early 1970s, the Soviet proton synchrotron (better known as the Serpukhov accelerator or U-70), with a nominal laboratory energy of up to 76 GeV, was the world leader. During these few years, several results of fundamental significance were obtained (partially in collaboration with physicists from CERN, France, and other countries). Let us briefly outline the main provisions of the paradigm that reigned at that time in the field of strong interaction theory.

Fragmentation Functions:Modifications and new Applications

We present a heavy quark fragmentation mechanism based on a modified version of the standard model of quark fragmentation, taking into account peculiarities of the Regge trajectories of quarkonia containing heavy quarks. The modified model describes the experimental data more satisfactorily both for meson and baryon production.

Can effective four-dimensional scalar theory be asymptotically free in a spacetime with extra dimensions?

We trace what happens with asymptotically free behavior of the running coupling in $ϕ^{3}$ theory in six-dimensional space-time if to compactify two spatial dimensions on a 2D closed manifold. The result can be considered as an effective 4D theory of infinitely many KK-type scalar fields with triple interactions. The effective \emph{dimensional} coupling inherits running to zero at high mass scales in a modified form depending on the size of the compact manifold. Some physical implications are discussed.

On the $ ρ$ and $ σ_{tot} $ measurement by the TOTEM Collaboration: in the wake of recent discoveries

The physical interpretation of these data changes accordingly.

Asymptotic Regimes of Hadron Scattering in QCD

Possible modes of asymptotic behavior of the amplitudes of hadron scattering in QCD are discussed. It is shown that the condition of triviality of the scattering matrix when the interaction of the fundamental fields is turned off leads to the impossibility of cross-sections that do not decrease with energy in the case of pure gluodynamics. It is also shown that in the presence of at least one type of massive quark the ban is lifted. Some consequences of the presence of an infrared fixed point are also discussed.

ExDiff Monte Carlo generator for Exclusive Diffraction. Version 1.0. Physics and manual

ExDiff is a Monte Carlo event generator for simulation of Exclusive Diffractive processes in proton-proton collisions. The present version includes reactions: elastic scattering $pp\to pp$ at 7, 8, 13, 14~TeV; $pp\to p+R+p$, $R = f_0(1710),\, f_2(1950)$ at 13~TeV. In the future versions many processes of Central Exclusive Diffractive Production will be added.

The Size Seems to Matter or Where Lies the "Asymptopia"?

We discuss an apparent correlation between the onset of the rising regime for the total cross-sections and the slowdown of the rise of the forward slopes with energy. It is shown that even at highest energies achieved with the LHC the proper sizes of the colliding protons comprise the bulk of the the interaction region. This seems to witness that the "asymptopia" - a hypothetical "truly asymptotic" regime - lies at energies no less than $\mathcal{O}$(100 TeV). In the course of reasoning we also discuss the question of the dependence of the effective sizes of hadrons in collision on the type of their interaction.

The Stationary Points and Structure of High-Energy Scattering Amplitude

The ISR and the 7 TeV LHC data indicate that the differential cross-section of elastic proton-proton scattering remains almost energy-independent at the transferred momentum $t\approx - 0.21\, \mathrm{GeV}^{2}$ at the level of $\approx 7.5 \mathrm{\ mb}/\mathrm{GeV}^{2}$. This property of $ dσ/dt$ (the "first" stationary point) appears due to the correlated growth of the total cross-section and the local slope parameter and can be expressed as a relation between the latter quantities. We anticipate that this property will be true up to 13 TeV. This enables us to normalize the preliminary TOTEM data for $ dσ/dt$ at 13 TeV and $ 0.05 < |t| < 3.4\, \mathrm{GeV}^{2}$ and predict the values of $ dσ/dt$ at this energy. These data give an evidence of the second stationary point at $t\approx - 2.3\,\mathrm{GeV}^{2}$ at the level of $\approx 33 \mathrm{\ nb}/\mathrm{GeV}^{2}$. The energy evolution of $ dσ/dt$ looks as if the high energy elastic scattering amplitude is a sum of two similar terms. We argue that the existence of the two stationary points and the two-component structure of the high energy elastic scattering amplitude are general properties for all elastic processes.

Is There a Hollow Inside the Proton?

We discuss a recently proposed interpretation of some model descriptions of the proton-proton elastic scattering data as a manifestation of alleged relative transparency of the central part of the interaction region in the impact parameter space. We argue that the presence of nonzero real part of the elastic scattering amplitude in the unitarity condition enables to conserve the traditional interpretation.

Modelling and characterization of a pneumatically actuated peristaltic micropump

There is an emerging class of microfluidic bioreactors which possess long-term, closed circuit perfusion under sterile conditions with in vivo-like flow parameters. Integrated into microfluidics, peristaltic-like pneumatically actuated displacement micropumps are able to meet these requirements. We present both a theoretical and experimental characterization of such pumps. In order to examine volume flow rate, we have developed a mathemati- cal model describing membrane motion under external pressure. The viscoelasticity of the membrane and hydrodynamic resistance of the microfluidic channel have been taken into account. Unlike other models, the developed model includes only the physical parameters of the pump and allows the estimation of their impact on the resulting flow. The model has been validated experimentally.

On a Possible Stationary Point in High-Energy Scattering

We discuss a curious observation: at energies from the ISR and up to the LHC, inclusively, the differential cross-section of elastic proton-proton scattering remains almost energy-independent at the transferred momentum t =-0.21 GeV^2 at the level of 7,5 mb/GeV^2.The latter value can be considered as a prediction for dsigma/dt at 13 TeV. We also obtain a lower bound for the forward pp slope at 13 GeV.

Single and double diffractive dissociation and the problem of extraction of the proton-Pomeron cross-section

Diffractive dissociation processes are analysed in the framework of covariant reggeization. We have considered the general form of hadronic tensor and its asymptotic behaviour for $t\rightarrow 0$ in the case of conserved tensor currents before reggeization. Resulting expressions for differential cross-section of single dissociation (SD) process ($pp \rightarrow p M$), double dissociation (DD) ($pp\rightarrow M_1 M_2$) and for the proton-Pomeron cross-section are given in detail, and corresponding problems of the approach are discussed.

High-Energy Scattering vs Static QCD Strings

We discuss the shape of the interaction region of the elastically scattered protons stipulated by the high-energy Pomeron exchange which turns out to be very similar with the shape of the static string representing the confining QCD flux tube. This similarity disappears when we enter the LHC energy region, which corresponds to many-Pomeron exchanges. Reversing the argument we conjecture a modified relationship between the width and the length of the confining string at very large lengths.
