A simplified model for monopole catalysis of nucleon decay

We present a simple model where a nucleon is treated as the Skyrmion, both monopole and Skyrmion are smooth solutions of the classical field equations, the baryon number non-conservation is explicitly built in and is due to the classical analogue of the triangle anomaly, and there is no necessity to consider leptons. We show by numerical analysis that there are no static classical solutions with non-zero baryon number on top of the monopole, i.e., that the monopole catalysis of Skyrmion decay indeed proceeds classically.

Free energy of an SU(2) monopole-antimonopole pair

We present a high-statistic numerical study of the free energy of a monopole-antimonopole pair in pure SU(2) theory. We find that the monopole-antimonopole interaction potential exhibits a screened behavior, as one would expect in presence of a monopole condensate. Screening occurs both in the low-temperature, confining phase of the theory, and in the high-temperature deconfined phase, with no evidence of a discontinuity of the screening mass across the transition. The mass of the object responsible for the screening at low temperature is approximately twice the established value for the lightest glueball, indicating a prevalent coupling to glueball excitations. At high temperature, the screening mass increases. We contrast the behavior of the quantum system with that of the corresponding classical system, where the monopole-antimonopole potential is of the Coulomb type.

Is the electric charge conserved in brane world?

We discuss whether electric charge conservation may not hold in four-dimensional world in models with infinite extra dimensions, i.e., whether escape of charged particles from our brane is consistent with effectively four-dimensional electrodynamics on the brane. We introduce a setup with photon localized on the brane and show that charge leakage into extra dimension is allowed within this setup. The electric field induced on the brane by escaping charge does not obey four-dimensional Maxwell's equations; this field gradually disappears in a causal way. We also speculate on the possibility of the escape of colored particles and formation of colorless free quark states on the brane.

Brane world: disappearing massive matter

In a brane (domain wall) scenario with an infinite extra dimension and localized gravity, bulk fermions and scalars often have bound states with zero 4-dimensional mass. In this way massless matter residing on the brane may be obtained. We consider what happens when one tries to introduce small, but non-vanishing mass to these matter fields. We find that the discrete zero modes turn into quasi-localized states with finite 4-dimensional mass and finite width. The latter is due to tunneling of massive matter into extra dimension. We argue that this phenomenon is generic to fields that can have bulk modes. We also point out that in theories meant to describe massive scalars, the 4-dimensional scalar potential has, in fact, power-law behavior at large distances.

Relaxation of the cosmological constant at inflation?

We suggest that the cosmological constant has been relaxed to its present, very small value during the inflationary stage of the evolution of the Universe. This requires relatively low scale, very long duration and unconventional source of inflation. We present a concrete mechanism of the cosmological constant relaxation at the inflationary epoch.

Quantum Cosmology

We comment on two issues in quantum cosmology, in the context of the Wheeler-De Witt equation and wave function of the Universe: (i) arrow of time and interpretation of the wave function in the classically allowed regions; (ii) stability of an approximation of the Born-Oppenheimer type in classically forbidden regions of the scale factor.

Potential between external monopole and antimonopole in SU(2) lattice glu odynamics

We present the results of a study of the free energy of a monopole pair in pure SU(2) theory at finite temperature, both below and above the deconfinement tran sition. We find a Yukawa potential between monopoles in both phases. At low temp erature, the screening mass is compatible with the lightest glueball mass. At hi gh temperature, we observe an increased screening mass with no apparent disconti nuity at the phase transition.

Ruling out a higher spin field solution to the cosmological constant problem

We consider the modification of Newton's gravity law in Dolgov's higher spin models designed to compensate the cosmological constant. We find that the effective Planck mass is unacceptably large in these models. We also point out that the properties of gravitational waves are entirely different in these models as compared to general relativity.

False vacuum decay in de Sitter space-time

We suggest a technique that explicitly accounts for the structure of an initial state of quantum field in the semiclassical calculations of path integral in curved space-time, and consider decay of metastable state (conformal vacuum of scalar particles above false classical vacuum) in background de Sitter space-time as an example. Making use of this technique, we justify the Coleman-De Luccia approach to the calculation of the decay probability. We propose an interpretation of the Hawking-Moss instanton as a limiting case of constrained instantons. We find that an inverse process of the transition from true vacuum to false one is allowed in de Sitter space-time, and calculate the corresponding probability.

Non-renormalization of induced charges and constraints on strongly coupled theories

It is shown that global fermionic charges induced in vacuum by slowly varying, topologically non-trivial background scalar fields are not renormalized provided that expansion in momenta of background fields is valid. This suggests that strongly coupled theories obey induced charge matching conditions which are analogous, but generally not equivalent, to 't Hooft anomaly matching conditions. We give a few examples of induced charge matching. In particular, the corresponding constraints in softly broken supersymmetric QCD suggest non-trivial low energy mass pattern, in full accord with the results of direct analyses.

Tunneling of Bound Systems at Finite Energies: Complex Paths Through Potential Barriers

We adapt the semiclassical technique, as used in the context of instanton transitions in quantum field theory, to the description of tunneling transmissions at finite energies through potential barriers by complex quantum mechanical systems. Even for systems initially in their ground state, not generally describable in semiclassical terms, the transmission probability has a semiclassical (exponential) form. The calculation of the tunneling exponent uses analytic continuation of degrees of freedom into a complex phase space as well as analytic continuation of the classical equations of motion into the complex time plane. We test this semiclassical technique by comparing its results with those of a computational investigation of the full quantum mechanical system, finding excellent agreement.

The Semiclassical Description of Tunneling in Scattering with Multiple Degrees of Freedom

We describe a computational investigation of tunneling at finite energy in a weakly coupled quantum mechanical system with two degrees of freedom. We compare a full quantum mechanical analysis to the results obtained by making use of a semiclassical technique developed in the context of instanton-like transitions in quantum field theory. This latter technique is based on an analytic continuation of the degrees of freedom into a complex phase space, and the simultaneous analytic continuation of the equations of motion into the complex time plane.

Induced charges as probes of low energy effective theories

We suggest that the correspondence between gauge theories strongly coupled in the infrared and their low energy effective theories may be probed by introducing topologically non-trivial background scalar fields. We argue that one loop expressions for the global charges induced in vacuum by these background fields are in some cases exact in the fundamental theory, and hence should be matched in the effective theory. These matching conditions are sometimes inequivalent to 't Hooft ones. A few examples of induced charge matching are presented.

Free energy of an SU(2) monopole-antimonopole pair

We induce an external ${Z}_2$ monopole-antimonopole pair in an SU(2) lattice gauge system and measure its free energy as a way to probe the vacuum structure. We discuss the motivation and computational methodology of the investigation and illustrate our preliminary results.

Cosmology with non-minimal scalar field: graceful entrance into inflation

We propose a scenario of the beginning of inflation in which the non-vacuum value of the scalar field that drives inflation develops dynamically due to the non-minimal coupling to gravity. In this scenario, inflation emerges as an intermediate stage of the evolution of the Universe, well after the Planck epoch, from a fairly general initial state.

Baryogenesis via neutrino oscillations

We propose a new mechanism of leptogenesis in which the asymmetries in lepton numbers are produced through the CP-violating oscillations of ``sterile'' (electroweak singlet) neutrinos. The asymmetry is communicated from singlet neutrinos to ordinary leptons through their Yukawa couplings. The lepton asymmetry is then reprocessed into baryon asymmetry by electroweak sphalerons. We show that the observed value of baryon asymmetry can be generated in this way, and the masses of ordinary neutrinos induced by the seesaw mechanism are in the astrophysically and cosmologically interesting range. Except for singlet neutrinos, no physics beyond the Standard Model is required.
