Memory Functions of the Additive Markov chains: Applications to Complex Dynamic Systems

A new approach to describing correlation properties of complex dynamic systems with long-range memory based on a concept of additive Markov chains (Phys. Rev. E 68, 061107 (2003)) is developed. An equation connecting a memory function of the chain and its correlation function is presented. This equation allows reconstructing the memory function using the correlation function of the system. Thus, we have elaborated a novel method to generate a sequence with prescribed correlation function. Effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method is demonstrated by simple model examples. Memory functions of concrete coarse-grained literary texts are found and their universal power-law behavior at long distances is revealed.

Competition between Two Kinds of Correlations in Literary Texts

A theory of additive Markov chains with long-range memory is used for description of correlation properties of coarse-grained literary texts. The complex structure of the correlations in texts is revealed. Antipersistent correlations at small distances, L < 300, and persistent ones at L > 300 define this nontrivial structure. For some concrete examples of literary texts, the memory functions are obtained and their power-law behavior at long distances is disclosed. This property is shown to be a cause of self-similarity of texts with respect to the decimation procedure.

Suppression of magnetic relaxation processes in melt-textured YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_x$ superconductors by a transverse ac magnetic field

The effect of the transverse AC magnetic field on relaxation process in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_x$ melt-textured superconductor was studied. A factor of 50 suppression of the relaxation rate could be achieved at the expense of some reduction in the maximum trapped field, with the magnetic-induction gradient being unchanged. This phenomenon is interpreted as a result of an increase of the pinning force after the action of the transverse AC magnetic field that is confirmed by the measurement of the trapped-induction distribution.

Rank distributions of words in additive many-step Markov chains and the Zipf law

The binary many-step Markov chain with the step-like memory function is considered as a model for the analysis of rank distributions of words in stochastic symbolic dynamical systems. We prove that the envelope curve for this distribution obeys the power law with the exponent of the order of unity in the case of rather strong persistent correlations. The Zipf law is shown to be valid for the rank distribution of words with lengths about and shorter than the correlation length in the Markov sequence. A self-similarity in the rank distribution with respect to the decimation procedure is observed.

Symbolic stochastic dynamical systems viewed as binary N-step Markov chains

A theory of systems with long-range correlations based on the consideration of binary N-step Markov chains is developed. In the model, the conditional probability that the i-th symbol in the chain equals zero (or unity) is a linear function of the number of unities among the preceding N symbols. The correlation and distribution functions as well as the variance of number of symbols in the words of arbitrary length L are obtained analytically and numerically. A self-similarity of the studied stochastic process is revealed and the similarity group transformation of the chain parameters is presented. The diffusion Fokker-Planck equation governing the distribution function of the L-words is explored. If the persistent correlations are not extremely strong, the distribution function is shown to be the Gaussian with the variance being nonlinearly dependent on L. The applicability of the developed theory to the coarse-grained written and DNA texts is discussed.

Macroturbulent Instability of the Flux Line Lattice in Anisotropic Superconductors

A theory of the macroturbulent instability in the system containing vortices of opposite directions (vortices and antivortices) in hard superconductors is proposed. The origin of the instability is connected with the anisotropy of the current capability in the sample plane. The anisotropy results in the appearance of tangential discontinuity of the hydrodynamic velocity of vortex and antivortex motion near the front of magnetization reversal. As is known from the classical hydrodynamics of viscous fluids, this leads to the turbulization of flow. The examination is performed on the basis of the anisotropic power-law current-voltage characteristics. The dispersion equation for the dependence of the instability increment on the wave number of perturbation is obtained, solved, and analyzed analytically and numerically. It is shown that the instability can be observed even at relatively weak anisotropy.

Direct Demonstration of the Anisotropic Origin of the Macroturbulent Instability in Type-II Superconductors

The physical nature of the macroturbulence in the vortex matter in YBCO superconductors is verified by means of magnetooptic study of the instability in a single crystal prepared specially for this purpose. The instability develops near those sample edges where the oppositely directed flow of vortices and antivortices, guided by twin boundaries, is characterized by the discontinuity of the tangential component of the hydrodynamic velocity. This fact directly indicates that the macroturbulence is analogous to the instability of fluid flow at a surface of a tangential velocity discontinuity in classical hydrodynamics, and is related to the anisotropic flux motion in the superconductor.

Binary N-Step Markov Chain as an Exactly Solvable Model of Long-Range Correlated Systems

A theory of systems with long-range correlations based on the consideration of binary N-step Markov chains is developed. In our model, the conditional probability that the i-th symbol in the chain equals zero (or unity) is a linear function of the number of unities among the preceding N symbols. The model allows exact analytical treatment. The correlation and distribution functions as well as the variance of number of symbols in the words of arbitrary length L are obtained analytically and numerically. A self-similarity of the studied stochastic process is revealed and the similarity transformation of the chain parameters is presented. The diffusion equation governing the distribution function of the L-words is explored. The applicability of the developed theory to the coarse-grained written and DNA texts is discussed.

Observation of Convergent Oscillations of the Flux Line Lattice as a Result of Magnetic Flux Jumping in Hard Superconductors

We have monitored new peculiarities of the dynamics of catastrophic avalanches of the magnetic flux in superconducting Nb, Nb-Ti, and YBaCuO samples: i) convergent oscillations of the magnetic flux; ii) a threshold for entering the huge flux avalanches in the shielding experiments; iii) a threshold for the exit of a residual flux in the trapping experiments. The observed phenomena are interpreted in terms of a theoretical model which takes into account the inertial properties of the vortex matter.

Hydrodynamic Instability of the Flux-antiflux Interface in Type-II Superconductors

The macroturbulence instability observed in fluxline systems during remagnetization of superconductors is explained. It is shown that when a region with flux is invaded by antiflux the interface can become unstable if there is a relative tangential flux motion. This condition occurs at the interface when the viscosity is anisotropic, e.g., due to flux guiding by twin boundaries in crystals. The phenomenon is similar to the instability of the tangential discontinuity in classical hydrodynamics. The obtained results are supported by magneto-optical observations of flux distribution on the surface of a YBCO single crystal with twins.

Nonlinear Effect of Transport Current on Response of Metals to Electromagnetic Radiation

The nonlinear interaction of DC current flowing in a thin metal film with an external low-frequency AC electromagnetic field is studied theoretically. The nonlinearity is related to the influence of the magnetic field of the DC current and the magnetic field of the wave on the form of electron trajectories. This magnetodynamic mechanism of nonlinearity is the most typical for pure metals at low temperatures. We find that such interaction causes sharp kinks in the temporal dependence of the AC electric field of the wave on surface of the sample. The phenomenon of amplification of the electromagnetic signal on the metal surface is predicted. We also calculate the nonlinear surface impedance and show that it turns out to be imaginary-valued and its modulus decreases drastically with the increase of the wave amplitude.

Temperature effect in the Casimir attraction of a thin metal film

The Casimir effect for conductors at arbitrary temperatures is theoretically studied. By using the analytical properties of the Green functions and applying the Abel-Plan formula to Lifshitz's equation, the Casimir force is presented as sum of a temperature dependent and vacuum contributions of the fluctuating electromagnetic field. The general results are applied to the system consisting of a bulk conductor and a thin metal film. It is shown that a characteristic frequency of the thermal fluctuations in this system is proportional to the square root of a thickness of the metal film. For the case of the sufficiently high temperatures when the thermal fluctuations play the main role in the Casimir interaction, this leads to the growth of the effective dielectric permittivity of the film and to a disappearance of the dependence of Casimir's force on the sample thickness.
