Symmetries of the quantum damped harmonic oscillator

For the non-conservative Caldirola-Kanai system, describing a quantum damped harmonic oscillator, a couple of constant-of-motion operators generating the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra can be found. The inclusion of the standard time evolution generator (which is not a symmetry) as a symmetry in this algebra, in a unitary manner, requires a non-trivial extension of this basic algebra and hence of the physical system itself. Surprisingly, this extension leads directly to the so-called Bateman dual system, which now includes a new particle acting as an energy reservoir. In addition, the Caldirola-Kanai dissipative system can be retrieved by imposing constraints. The algebra of symmetries of the dual system is presented, as well as a quantization that implies, in particular, a first-order Schrödinger equation. As opposed to other approaches, where it is claimed that the spectrum of the Bateman Hamiltonian is complex and discrete, we obtain that it is real and continuous, with infinite degeneracy in all regimes.

Coherent States of Accelerated Relativistic Quantum Particles, Vacuum Radiation and the Spontaneous Breakdown of the Conformal SU(2,2) Symmetry

We give a quantum mechanical description of accelerated relativistic particles in the framework of Coherent States (CS) of the (3+1)-dimensional conformal group SU(2,2), with the role of accelerations played by special conformal transformations and with the role of (proper) time translations played by dilations. The accelerated ground state $\tildeϕ_0$ of first quantization is a CS of the conformal group. We compute the distribution function giving the occupation number of each energy level in $\tildeϕ_0$ and, with it, the partition function Z, mean energy E and entropy S, which resemble that of an "Einstein Solid". An effective temperature T can be assigned to this "accelerated ensemble" through the thermodynamic expression dE/dS, which leads to a (non linear) relation between acceleration and temperature different from Unruh's (linear) formula. Then we construct the corresponding conformal-SU(2,2)-invariant second quantized theory and its spontaneous breakdown when selecting Poincaré-invariant degenerated θ-vacua (namely, coherent states of conformal zero modes). Special conformal transformations (accelerations) destabilize the Poincaré vacuum and make it to radiate.

Symmetry group of massive Yang-Mills theories without Higgs and their quantization

We analyze the symmetry group of massive Yang-Mills theories and their quantization strongly motivated by an already proposed alternative to the Standard Model of electroweak interactions without Higgs. In these models the mass generation of the intermediate vector bosons is based on a non-Abelian Stueckelberg mechanism where the dynamics of the Goldstone-like bosons is addressed by a partial-trace Non-Linear-Sigma piece of the Lagrangian. In spite of the high non-linearity of the scalar sector, the existence of an infinite number of symmetries, extending the traditional gauge group, allows us to sketch a group-theoretical quantization algorithm specially suited to non-linear systems, which departs from usual canonical quantization. On the quantum representation space of this extended symmetry group, a quantum Hamiltonian preserving the representation is given, whose classical analog reproduces the equations of motion.

A symmetry trip from Caldirola to Bateman damped systems

For the Caldirola-Kanai system, describing a quantum damped harmonic oscillator, a couple of constant-of-motion operators generating the Heisenberg algebra can be found. The inclusion of the standard time evolution symmetry in this algebra for damped systems, in a unitary manner, requires a non-trivial extension of this basic algebra and hence the physical system itself. Surprisingly, this extension leads directly to the so-called Bateman's dual system, which now includes a new particle acting as an energy reservoir. The group of symmetries of the dual system is presented, as well as a quantization that implies, in particular, a first-order Schrödinger equation. The usual second-order equation and the inclusion of the original Caldirola-Kanai model in Bateman's system are also discussed.

Symmetries of Non-Linear Systems: Group Approach to their Quantization

We report briefly on an approach to quantum theory entirely based on symmetry grounds which improves Geometric Quantization in some respects and provides an alternative to the canonical framework. The present scheme, being typically non-perturbative, is primarily intended for non-linear systems, although needless to say that finding the basic symmetry associated with a given (quantum) physical problem is in general a difficult task, which many times nearly emulates the complexity of finding the actual (classical) solutions. Apart from some interesting examples related to the electromagnetic and gravitational particle interactions, where an algebraic version of the equivalence principle naturally arises, we attempt to the quantum description of non-linear sigma models. In particular, we present the actual quantization of the partial-trace non-linear SU(2) sigma model as a representative case of non-linear quantum field theory.

Non-Canonical Perturbation Theory of Non-Linear Sigma Models

We explore the O(N)-invariant Non-Linear Sigma Model (NLSM) in a different perturbative regime from the usual relativistic-free-field one, by using non-canonical basic commutation relations adapted to the underlying O(N) symmetry of the system, which also account for the non-trivial (non-flat) geometry and topology of the target manifold.

A Quantizable Model of Massive Gauge Vector Bosons without Higgs

We incorporate the parameters of the gauge group G into the gauge theory of interactions through a non-linear partial-trace sigma-model Lagrangian on G/H. The minimal coupling of the new (Goldstone-like) scalar bosons provides mass terms to those intermediate vector bosons associated with the quotient G/H, without spoiling gauge invariance, remaining the H-vector potentials massless. The main virtue of a partial trace on G/H, rather than on the entire G, is that we can find an infinite-dimensional symmetry, with non-trivial Noether invariants, which ensures quantum integrability in a non-canonical quantization scheme. The present formalism is explicitly applied to the case G=SU(2)x U(1), as a Higgs-less alternative to the Standard Model of electroweak interactions, although it can also be used in low-energy phenomenological models for strong interactions.

Thermal Vacuum Radiation in Spontaneously Broken Second-Quantized Theories on Curved Phase Spaces of Constant Curvature

We construct second-quantized (field) theories on coset spaces of pseudo-unitary groups U(p,q)$. The existence of degenerated quantum vacua (coherent states of zero modes) leads to a breakdown of the original pseudo-unitary symmetry. The action of some spontaneously broken symmetry transformations destabilize the vacuum and make it to radiate. We study the structure of this thermal radiation for curved phase spaces of constant curvature: complex projective spaces CP^{N-1}=SU(N)/U(N-1) and open complex balls CD^{N-1}=SU(1,N-1)/U(N-1). Positive curvature is related to generalized Fermi-Dirac (FD) statistics, whereas negative curvature is connected with generalized Bose-Einstein (BE) statistics, the standard cases being recovered for N=2. We also make some comments on the contribution of the vacuum (dark) energy to the cosmological constant and the phenomenon of inflation.

Group-quantization of non-linear sigma models: particle on S^2 revisited

We present the quantum mechanics of "partial-trace" non-linear sigma models, on the grounds of a fully symmetry-based procedure. After the general scheme is sketched, the particular example of a particle on the two-sphere is explicitly developed. As a remarkable feature, no explicit constraint treatment is required nor ordering ambiguities do appear. Moreover, the energy spectrum is recovered without extra terms in the curvature of the sphere.

Lagrangian Formalism on Jet-Gauge and Jet-Diffeomorphism Groups: Towards a Unification of Gravity with Internal Gauge Interactions

In this talk the description of gauge theories associated with internal symmetries is extended to the case in which the symmetry group is the space-time translation group (recovering Einstein's theory) using the standard jet-bundle formalism. We also reformulate these theories introducing the idea of jet-gauge and jet-diffeomorphism groups. Finally, we attempt to a simple, yet non-trivial, mixing of gravity and electromagnetism (or more general internal interaction) by turning to gauge symmetry a central extension of the Poincare group.

Group Approach to the Quantization of the Pöschl-Teller dynamics

The quantum dynamics of a particle in the Modified Pöschl-Teller potential is derived from the group $SL(2,R)$ by applying a Group Approach to Quantization (GAQ). The explicit form of the Hamiltonian as well as the ladder operators is found in the enveloping algebra of this basic symmetry group. The present algorithm provides a physical realization of the non-unitary, finite-dimensional, irreducible representations of the $SL(2,R)$ group. The non-unitarity manifests itself in that only half of the states are normalizable, in contrast with the representations of SU(2) where all the states are physical.

Group-cohomology refinement to classify $G$-symplectic manifolds

``Pseudo-cohomology'', as a refinement of Lie group cohomology, is soundly studied aiming at classifying of the symplectic manifolds associated with Lie groups. In this study, the framework of symplectic cohomology provides fundamental new insight, which enriches the analysis previously developed in the setting of Cartan-Eilenberg $H^2(G,U(1))$ cohomology.

Revisited gauge principle: towards a unification of space-time and internal gauge interactions

The minimal coupling principle is revisited under the quantum perspectives of the space-time symmetry. This revision is better realized on a Group Approach to Quantization (GAQ) where group cohomology and extensions of groups play a preponderant role. We firstly consider the case of the electromagnetic potential; the Galilei and/or Poincare group is (non-centrally) extended by the "local" U(1) group. This group can also be seen as a central extension, parametrized by both the mass and the electric charge, of an infinite-dimensional group, on which GAQ leads to the dynamics of a particle moving in the presence of an electromagnetic field. Then we try the gravitational interaction of a particle by turning into "local" the space-time translations. However, promoting to "local" the space-time subgroup of the true symmetry of the quantum free relativistic particle, i.e. the centrally extended by U(1) Poincare group, results in a new electromagnetic-like force of pure gravitational origin. This is a consequence of the space-time translations not being an invariant subgroup of the extended Poincare group and constitutes a preliminary attempt to a non-trivial mixing of space-time and internal gauge interactions.

New insights in particle dynamics from group cohomology

The dynamics of a particle moving in background electromagnetic and gravitational fields is revisited from a Lie group cohomological perspective. Physical constants characterising the particle appear as central extension parameters of a group which is obtained from a centrally extended kinematical group (Poincare or Galilei) by making local some subgroup. The corresponding dynamics is generated by a vector field inside the kernel of a presymplectic form which is derived from the canonical left-invariant one-form on the extended group. A non-relativistic limit is derived from the geodesic motion via an Inonu-Wigner contraction. A deeper analysis of the cohomological structure reveals the possibility of a new force associated with a non-trivial mixing of gravity and electromagnetism leading to in principle testable predictions.

Extended diffeomorphism algebras in (quantum) gravitational physics

We construct an explicit representation of the algebra of local diffeomorphisms of a manifold with realistic dimensions. This is achieved in the setting of a general approach to the (quantum) dynamics of a physical system which is characterized by the fundamental role assigned to a basic underlying symmetry. The developed mathematical formalism makes contact with the relevant gravitational notions by means of the addition of some extra structure. The specific manners in which this is accomplished, together with their corresponding physical interpretation, lead to different gravitational models. Distinct strategies are in fact briefly outlined, showing the versatility of the present conceptual framework.

Space-time dynamics from algebra representations

We present a model for introducing dynamics into a space-time geometry. This space-time structure is constructed from a C*-algebra defined in terms of the generators of an irreducible unitary representation of a finite-dimensional Lie algebra G. This algebra is included as a subalgebra in a bigger algebra F, the generators of which mix the representations of G in a way that relates different space-times and creates the dynamics. This construction can be considered eventually as a model for 2-D quantum gravity.
