The solar neutrino puzzle: present situation and future scenarios

We present a short review of the existing evidence in favor of neutrino mass and neutrino oscillations which come from different kinds of experiments. We focus our attention in particular on solar neutrinos, presenting a global updated phenomenological analysis of all the available data and we comment on different possible future scenarios.

Determination of Neutrino mixing parameters after SNO oscillation evidence

An updated analysis of all available neutrino oscillation evidence in Solar experiments (SK day and night spectra, global rates from Homestake, SAGE and GALLEX) including the latest SNO CC and NC data is presented. Assuming that the shape of the SNO CC energy spectrum is undistorted and using the information provided by SNO we obtain, for the fraction of electron neutrinos remaining in the solar beam at energies $\gsim 5$ MeV: $ϕ_{CC}/ϕ_{NC}=0.34^{+0.05}_{-0.04},$ which is nominally $\sim 30σ$ away from the standard value. The fraction of oscillating neutrinos which into active ones is computed to be: $ (Φ_{NC}-Φ_{CC})/(Φ_{SSM}-Φ_{CC})=0.92^{+0.39}_{-0.20} $ nearly $5σ$ deviations from the pure sterile oscillation case. The data is still compatible with an important fraction of sterile component in the solar beam (up to 20% of the total). In the framework of two active neutrino oscillations we determine individual neutrino mixing parameters and their errors in the region of no spectrum distortion ($Δ< T_e> <1%$), we obtain $Δm^2= 4.5^{+2.7}_{-1.4}\times 10^{-5} \eV^2, \quad \tan^2θ=0.40^{+0.10}_{-0.08}. $ This is in agreement with the best $chi^2$ solution in the LMA region.

Solving the solar neutrino problem with kamLAND and BOREXINO

We analyze the expected signals of two future neutrino experiments, kamLAND and BOREXINO. We show that with just these experiments, we will hopefully be able to determine which of the existing solutions to the solar neutrino problem is the real solution. We also analyze existing solar neutrino data and determine the best-fit points in the oscillation-parameter space finding that with the inclusion of SNO-charged current, the global-rates analysis gives a favored LMA solution with a goodness of fit (g.o.f) of just 32.63%, whereas the g.o.f of the SMA solution is 9.83%. Nonetheless, maximal and quasi-maximal mixing is not favored. If we include the Superkamiokande spectrum in our χ^2 analysis, we obtain a LMA solution with a g.o.f. of 84.38%.

Global analysis of Solar neutrino oscillation evidence including SNO and implications for Borexino

An updated analysis of all available neutrino oscillation evidence in Solar experiments including the latest $SNO$ data is presented. Predictions for total rates and day-night asymmetry in Borexino are calculated. Our analysis features the use of exhaustive computation of the neutrino oscillation probabilities and the use of an improved statistical $χ^2$ minimization. In the framework of two neutrino oscillations we conclude that the best fit to the data is obtained in the LMA region with parameters $(Δm^2, \tan^2θ) = (5.2 \times 10^{-5} \eV^2, 0.47)$, ($χ^2_{min}/n=0.82$, $n=38$ degrees of freedom). Although less favored, solutions in the LOW and VAC regions are still possible with a reasonable statistical significance. The best possible solution in the SMA region gets as maximum a statistical significance as low as $\sim 3%$. We study the implications of these results for the prospects of Borexino and the possibility of discriminating between the different solutions. The expected normalized Borexino signal is 0.62 at the best fit LMA solution while the DN asymmetry is negligible (approximately $10^{-5}$). In the LOW region the signal is in the range $\sim 0.6-0.7$ at 90% confidence level while the asymmetry is $\simeq 1-20%$. As a consequence, the combined Borexino measurements of the total event rate with a error below $\pm 5-10%$ and day-night total rate asymmetry with a precision comparable to the one of SuperKamiokande, will have a strong chance of distinguishing or at least strongly favoring one of the Solar neutrino solutions provided by present data.

Solar neutrino experiments and Borexino perspectives

We present an updated analysis of all the data available about solar neutrinos, including the charged current SNO results. The best fit of the data is obtained in the Large Mixing Angle region, but different solutions are still possible. We also study the perspectives of Borexino and conclude that this experiment, with a parallel analysis of total rate and day-night asymmmetry, should be able to discriminate between the different possible solutions.

Effective Lagrangians in bound state calculations

In order to investigate specific aspects of bound state calculations in a non-relativistic framework, we consider the energy-levels of a massive scalar particle, which moves in an external field and interacts in addition with a massless scalar particle. The discussion includes the following topics: dimensionally regularized bound-state calculations, ultraviolet finiteness of bound-state observables and their independence of the off-mass-shell behavior of Green functions, non-renormalizable interactions, structure of the non-relativistic two-point function, power counting and matching.

Radiative large-angle Bhabha scattering in collinear kinematics

The process of large-angle high energy electron-positron scattering with emission of one hard photon almost collinear to one of the charged particles momenta is considered. The differential cross section with radiative corrections due to emission of virtual and soft real photons calculated to a power accuracy is presented. Emission of two hard photons and total expressions for radiative correction are given in leading logarithmical approximation. The latter are illustrated by numeric estimates. A relation of the results with structure function formalism is discussed.

The resummed thrust distribution in DIS

We present preliminary results on the resummation of leading and next-to-leading logarithms for the thrust distribution in deep inelastic scattering. Our predictions, expanded to O(alpha_s^2), are compared to corresponding results from the Monte Carlo programs DISASTER++ and DISENT.

The solution to a multichannel Bethe potential and its application to pion-nucleus reactions

We solve a radial Schrödinger equation for the case of a multichannel square well plus an exponential potential in one of the channels. The solution is obtained by summing exactly the infinite terms of the perturbative series for the evolution operator of the system. Analytical expressions for the scattering matrix and the scattering length are given, a Deser-like formula which connects approximate ground energies and scattering length is obtained for a particular case. Possible physical applications of these results are discussed briefly.

Some O(α^2) Annihilation Type Contributions to the Orthopositronium Width

We consider some radiative corrections to the lowest order annihilation diagram for the orthopositronium decay rate. The insertion of the renormalized vertex correction in the annihilation graph gives $1.6283 (α/π)^2 Γ_0$. We compute also the contribution of the square of the lowest order annihilation amplitude, which turns out to be $0.1702 (α/π)^2 Γ_0$. Finally, we obtain a term $α^2 \lnαΓ_0$ arising from the correction to the light-light scattering block due to the exchange of one coulombic photon, in agreement with earlier computations.

The Physics of $K^0 -\bar K^0$ Mixing: $\widehat{B}_K$ and $ΔM_{LS}$ in the Chiral Quark Model

We compute the $\widehat B_K$ parameter and the mass difference $ΔM_{LS}$ of the $K^0-\bar K^0$ system by means of the chiral quark model. The chiral coefficients of the relevant $ΔS=2$ and $ΔS=1$ chiral lagrangians are computed via quark-loop integration. We include the relevant effects of one-loop corrections in chiral perturbation theory. The final result is very sensitive to non-factorizable corrections of $O(α_S N)$ coming from gluon condensation. The size of the gluon condensate is determined by fitting the experimental value of the amplitude $K^+ \to π^+π^0$. By varying all the relevant parameters we obtain $\widehat{B}_K= 0.87 \pm 0.33\ .$ We evaluate within the model the long-distance contributions to $ΔM_{LS}$ induced by the double insertion of the $ΔS = 1$ chiral lagrangian and study the interplay between short- and long-distance amplitudes. By varying all parameters we obtain $ΔM_{LS}^{th}/ΔM_{LS}^{exp} = 0.76 ^{+0.64}_{-0.34} .$ Finally, we investigate the phenomenological constraints on the Kobayashi-Maskawa parameter Im $λ_t$ entering the determination of $ε'/ε$.

The $ΔS = 1$ Weak Chiral Lagrangian as the Effective Theory of the Chiral Quark Model

We use the chiral quark model to estimate the coefficients of the weak chiral lagrangian as obtained from the bosonization of the ten relevant operators of the $ΔS = 1$ effective quark lagrangian. All contributions of order $N_c^2$ as well as $N_c$ and $α_s N_c$ are included. The chiral coefficients are given in terms of $f_π$, the quark and gluon condensates and the scale-dependent NLO Wilson coefficients of the corresponding operators. In addition, they depend on the constituent quark mass $M$, a parameter characteristic of the model. The $γ_5$-scheme dependence of the chiral coefficients, computed via dimensional regularization, and the Fierz transformation properties of the operator basis are discussed in detail. We apply our result to the evaluation of the hadronic matrix elements for the decay $K^0 \rightarrow 2 π$, consistently including the renormalization induced by the meson loops. The effect of this renormalization is sizable and introduces a long-distance scale dependence that matches in the physical amplitudes the short-distance scale dependence of the Wilson coefficients.

The $ΔI = 1/2$ Selection Rule

We compute the isospin $I= 0$ and 2 amplitudes for the decay of a kaon into two pions by estimating the relevant hadronic matrix elements in the chiral quark model. The results are parametrized in terms of the quark and gluon condensates and of the constituent quark mass $M$. The latter is a parameter characteristic of the model, that we restrict by matching the results in the two $γ_5$-schemes (HV and NDR) of dimensional regularization. We find that, for values of these parameters within the current determinations, the $ΔI= 1/2$ selection rule is well reproduced by means of the cumulative effects of short-distance NLO Wilson coefficients, penguin diagrams, non-factorizable soft-gluon corrections and meson-loop renormalization.
