Detection of thermal neutrons with the PRISMA-YBJ array in Extensive Air Showers selected by the ARGO-YBJ experiment

We report on a measurement of thermal neutrons, generated by the hadronic component of extensive air showers (EAS), by means of a small array of EN-detectors developed for the PRISMA project (PRImary Spectrum Measurement Array), novel devices based on a compound alloy of ZnS(Ag) and $^{6}$LiF. This array has been operated within the ARGO-YBJ experiment at the high altitude Cosmic Ray Observatory in Yangbajing (Tibet, 4300 m a.s.l.). Due to the tight correlation between the air shower hadrons and thermal neutrons, this technique can be envisaged as a simple way to estimate the number of high energy hadrons in EAS. Coincident events generated by primary cosmic rays of energies greater than 100 TeV have been selected and analyzed. The EN-detectors have been used to record simultaneously thermal neutrons and the air shower electromagnetic component. The density distributions of both components and the total number of thermal neutrons have been measured. The correlation of these data with the measurements carried out by ARGO-YBJ confirms the excellent performance of the EN-detector.

Acoustic search for high-energy neutrinos in Lake Baikal: status and perspectives

We report theoretical and experimental results of on-going feasibility studies to detect cosmic neutrinos acoustically in Lake Baikal. In order to examine ambient noise conditions and to develop respective pulse detection techniques a prototype device was created. The device is operating at a depth of 150 m at the site of the Baikal Neutrino Telescope and is capable to detect and classify acoustic signals with different shapes, as well as signals from neutrino-induced showers.

The prototype string for the km3-scale Baikal neutrino telescope

A prototype string for the future km3-scale Baikal neutrino telescope has been deployed in April, 2008 and is fully integrated into the NT200+ telescope. All basic string elements - optical modules (with 12"/13" hemispherical photomultipliers), 200MHz FADC readout and calibration system - have been redesigned following experience with NT200+. First results of in-situ operation of this prototype string are presented.

Search for a Diffuse Flux of High-Energy Extraterrestrial Neutrinos with the NT200 Neutrino Telescope

We present the results of a search for high energy extraterrestrial neutrinos with the Baikal underwater Cherenkov detector NT200, based on data taken in 1998 - 2002. Upper limits on the diffuse fluxes of $ν_e+ν_μ+ν_τ$, predicted by several models of AGN-like neutrino sources, are derived. For an $E^{-2}$ behavior of the neutrino spectrum, our limit is $E^2 Φ_ν(E)<8.1 10^{-7} cm^{-2} s^{-1} sr^{-1} GeV$ over an neutrino energy range $2 10^4 - 5 10^7 GeV$. The upper limit on the resonant $\barν_e$ diffuse flux is $Φ_{\barν_e}< 3.3 10^{-20} cm^{-2} s^{-1} sr^{-1} GeV^{-1}$.
