Scaling of waves in the Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld sandpile model

We study probability distributions of waves of topplings in the Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld model on hypercubic lattices for dimensions D>=2. Waves represent relaxation processes which do not contain multiple toppling events. We investigate bulk and boundary waves by means of their correspondence to spanning trees, and by extensive numerical simulations. While the scaling behavior of avalanches is complex and usually not governed by simple scaling laws, we show that the probability distributions for waves display clear power law asymptotic behavior in perfect agreement with the analytical predictions. Critical exponents are obtained for the distributions of radius, area, and duration, of bulk and boundary waves. Relations between them and fractal dimensions of waves are derived. We confirm that the upper critical dimension D_u of the model is 4, and calculate logarithmic corrections to the scaling behavior of waves in D=4. In addition we present analytical estimates for bulk avalanches in dimensions D>=4 and simulation data for avalanches in D<=3. For D=2 they seem not easy to interpret.

The Upper Critical Dimension of the Abelian Sandpile Model

The existing estimation of the upper critical dimension of the Abelian Sandpile Model is based on a qualitative consideration of avalanches as self-avoiding branching processes. We find an exact representation of an avalanche as a sequence of spanning sub-trees of two-component spanning trees. Using equivalence between chemical paths on the spanning tree and loop-erased random walks, we reduce the problem to determination of the fractal dimension of spanning sub-trees. Then, the upper critical dimension $d_u=4$ follows from Lawler's theorems for intersection probabilities of random walks and loop-erased random walks.

Expansion and Contraction of Avalanches in 2D Abelian Sandpile

We present a detailed analysis of large scale simulations of avalanches in the 2D Abelian sandpile model. We compare statistical properties of two different decompositions of avalanches into clusters of topplings and waves of topplings. Auxiliary critical exponents are introduced and the existence of the exponent governing the contraction of avalanches claimed in our previous work [Priezzhev et al, PRL 76,2093 (1996)] is confirmed. We also give more elaborated argumentation for the exact values of the exponents characterizing the statistics of waves.

Dynamics of Eulerian walkers

We investigate the dynamics of Eulerian walkers as a model of self-organized criticality. The evolution of the system is subdivided into characteristic periods which can be seen as avalanches. The structure of avalanches is described and the critical exponent in the distribution of first avalanches $τ=2$ is determined. We also study a mean square displacement of Eulerian walkers and obtain a simple diffusion law in the critical state. The evolution of underlying medium from a random state to the critical one is also described.

Introduction to the Sandpile Model

This article is based on a talk given by one of us (EVI) at the conference ``StatPhys-Taipei-1997''. It overviews the exact results in the theory of the sandpile model and discusses shortly yet unsolved problem of calculation of avalanche distribution exponents. The key ingredients include the analogy with the critical reaction-diffusion system, the spanning tree representation of height configurations and the decomposition of the avalanche process into waves of topplings.

Eulerian Walkers as a model of Self-Organised Criticality

We propose a new model of self-organized criticality. A particle is dropped at random on a lattice and moves along directions specified by arrows at each site. As it moves, it changes the direction of the arrows according to fixed rules. On closed graphs these walks generate Euler circuits. On open graphs, the particle eventually leaves the system, and a new particle is then added. The operators corresponding to particle addition generate an abelian group, same as the group for the Abelian Sandpile model on the graph. We determine the critical steady state and some critical exponents exactly, using this equivalence.

Self-organized criticality in self-directing walks

A new model of self-organized criticality is proposed. An algebra of operators is introduced which is similar to that used for the Abelian sandpile model. The structure of the configurational space is determined and the number of recurrent states is found.

The Kasteleyn model and a cellular automaton approach to traffic flow

We propose a bridge between the theory of exactly solvable models and the investigation of traffic flow. By choosing the activities in an apropriate way the dimer configurations of the Kasteleyn model on a hexagonal lattice can be interpreted as space-time trajectories of cars. This then allows for a calculation of the flow-density relationship (fundamental diagram). We further introduce a closely-related cellular automaton model. This model can be viewed as a variant of the Nagel-Schreckenberg model in which the cars do not have a velocity memory. It is also exactly solvable and the fundamental diagram is calculated.
