Cornering Solar Radiative-Zone Fluctuations with KamLAND and SNO Salt

We update the best constraints on fluctuations in the solar medium deep within the solar Radiative Zone to include the new SNO-salt solar neutrino measurements. We find that these new measurements are now sufficiently precise that neutrino oscillation parameters can be inferred independently of any assumptions about fluctuation properties. Constraints on fluctuations are also improved, with amplitudes of 5% now excluded at the 99% confidence level for correlation lengths in the range of several hundred km. Because they are sensitive to correlation lengths which are so short, these solar neutrino results are complementary to constraints coming from helioseismology.

Resonant origin for density fluctuations deep within the Sun: helioseismology and magneto-gravity waves

We analyze helioseismic waves near the solar equator in the presence of magnetic fields deep within the solar radiative zone. We find that reasonable magnetic fields can significantly alter the shapes of the wave profiles for helioseismic g-modes. They can do so because the existence of density gradients allows g-modes to resonantly excite Alfven waves, causing mode energy to be funnelled along magnetic field lines, away from the solar equatorial plane. The resulting wave forms show comparatively sharp spikes in the density profile at radii where these resonances take place. We estimate how big these waves might be in the Sun, and perform a first search for observable consequences. We find the density excursions at the resonances to be too narrow to be ruled out by present-day analyses of p-wave helioseismic spectra, even if their amplitudes were to be larger than a few percent. (In contrast it has been shown in (Burgess et al. 2002) that such density excursions could affect solar neutrino fluxes in an important way.) Because solar p-waves are not strongly influenced by radiative-zone magnetic fields, standard analyses of helioseismic data should not be significantly altered. The influence of the magnetic field on the g-mode frequency spectrum could be used to probe sufficiently large radiative-zone magnetic fields should solar g-modes ever be definitively observed. Our results would have stronger implications if overstable solar g-modes should prove to have very large amplitudes, as has sometimes been argued.

Large mixing angle oscillations as a probe of the deep solar interior

We re-examine the sensitivity of solar neutrino oscillations to noise in the solar interior using the best current estimates of neutrino properties. Our results show that the measurement of neutrino properties at KamLAND provides new information about fluctuations in the solar environment on scales to which standard helioseismic constraints are largely insensitive. We also show how the determination of neutrino oscillation parameters from a combined fit of KamLAND and solar data depends strongly on the magnitude of solar density fluctuations. We argue that a resonance between helioseismic and Alfven waves might provide a physical mechanism for generating these fluctuations and, if so, neutrino-oscillation measurements could be used to constrain the size of magnetic fields deep within the solar radiative zone.

Spin waves in the magnetized plasma of a supernova and its excitation by neutrino fluxes

The spin effects on electromagnetic waves in a strongly magnetized plasma with rare collisions is considered with the help of relativistic kinetic equations, which takes into account the electron spin dynamics in the selfconsistent electric and magnetic fields. It is shown that for electromagnetic waves propagating almost perpendicular to ambient magnetic field the spin effects become essential in the vicinity of electron gyrofrequency and the corresponding wave dispersion and growth rate of the electromagnetic spin waves in the presence of intense quasi monoenergetic fluxes of neutrino is determined.

Gauge invariance and weak forces in an isotropic medium

We demonstrate that the neutrino kinetic equation derived by the standard Bogolyubov method is formally gauge non-invariant and give a recipe how to recast it to the gauge invariant form recovering the standard Lorentz form weak force term which apparently conserves the lepton current. The analogy with the QED plasma case is traced which in asymptotic regions implies substitution of electric charge $e$ by the induced electric charge $e_ν^{ind}$ of neutrino within the phase factor connecting neutrino gauge invariant and non-invariant distribution functions.

Neutrino kinetics in a magnetized dense plasma

The relativistic kinetic equations (RKE) for lepton plasma in the presence of a strong external magnetic field are derived in Vlasov approximation. The new RKE for the electron spin distribution function includes the weak interaction with neutrinos originated by the axial vector current ($\sim c_A$) and provided by the parity nonconservation. In a polarized electron gas Bloch equation describing the evolution of the magnetization density perturbation is derived from the electron spin RKE being modified in the presence of neutrino fluxes. Such modified hydrodynamical equation allows to obtain the new dispersion equation in a magnetized plasma from which the neutrino driven instability of spin waves can be found. It is shown that this instability is more efficient e.g. in a magnetized supernova than the analogous one for Langmuir waves enhanced in an isotropic plasma.

A non-resonant dark-side solution to the solar neutrino problem

We re-analyse spin-flavour precession solutions to the solar neutrino problem in the light of the recent SNO CC result as well as the 1258--day Super-Kamiokande data and the upper limit on solar anti-neutrinos. In a self-consistent magneto-hydrodynamics approach the resulting scheme has only 3 effective parameters: $Δm^2$, $μB_\perp$ and the neutrino mixing angle $θ$. We show how a rates-only analysis for fixed $μB_\perp$ slightly favours spin-flavour precession (SFP) solutions over oscillations (OSC). In addition to the resonant solution (RSFP for short), there is a new non-resonant solution (NRSFP) in the ``dark-side''. Both RSFP and NRSFP lead to flat recoil energy spectra in excellent agreement with the latest SuperKamiokande data. We also show that in the presence of a neutrino transition magnetic moment of $10^{-11}$ Bohr magneton, a magnetic field of 80 KGauss eliminates all large mixing solutions other than the so-called LMA solution.

Solar neutrino problem accounting for self-consistent magnetohydrodynamics solution for solar magnetic fields

The analysis of the resonant spin-flavour (RSF) solutions to the solar neutrino problem in the framework of simplest analytic solutions to the solar magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) equations is presented. We performed the global fit of the recent solar neutrino data, including event rates as well as day and night recoil electron spectra induced by solar neutrino interactions in SuperKamiokande. We compare quantitatively our simplest MHD-RSF fit with vacuum oscillation (VAC) and MSW--type (SMA, LMA and LOW) solutions to the solar neutrino problem using a common well-calibrated theoretical calculation and fit procedure and find MHD-RSF fit to be somewhat better than those obtained for the favored neutrino oscillation solutions. We made the predictions for future experiments to disentangle the MHD-RSF scenario from other scenarios.

The Simplest Resonant Spin--Flavour Solution to the Solar Neutrino Problem

We re-analyse the resonant spin-flavour (RSF) solutions to the solar neutrino problem in the framework of analytic solutions to the solar magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) equations. By substantially eliminating the arbitrariness associated to the magnetic field profile due to both mathematical consistency and physical requirements we propose the simplest scheme (MHD-RSF, for short) for solar neutrino conversion using realistic static MHD solutions. Using such effective two-parameter scheme we perform the first global fit of the recent solar neutrino data, including event rates as well as zenith angle distributions and recoil electron spectra induced by solar neutrino interactions in Superkamiokande. We compare quantitatively our simplest MHD-RSF fit with vacuum oscillation (VAC) and MSW-type (SMA, LMA and LOW) solutions to the solar neutrino problem using a common well-calibrated theoretical calculation and fit procedure. We find our MHD-RSF fit to be somewhat better than those obtained for the favored neutrino oscillation solutions, though not in a statistically significant way. We briefly discuss the prospects to disentangle our MHD-RSF scenario at future solar neutrino experiments, giving some predictions for the SNO experiment.

MSW Solutions to the Solar Neutrino Problem in Presence of Noisy Matter Density Fluctuations

We study the effect of random matter density fluctuations in the sun on resonant neutrino conversion in matter by solving numerically the evolution equation for the neutrino system including the full effect of the random matter density fluctuations of given amplitude and correlation length. In order to establish the possible effect on the MSW solutions to the solar neutrino problem we perform a global analysis of all the existing observables including the measured total rates as well as the Super-Kamiokande measurement on the time dependence of the event rates during the day and night and the recoil electron energy spectrum. We find the effects of random noise to be larger for small mixing angles and they are mostly important for correlation lengths in the range few 100 km $\lesssim L_0\lesssim$ few 1000 km. They can be understood as due to a parametric resonance occuring when the phase acquired by the oscillating neutrino state on one fluctuation length L_0 is a multiple of 2$π$. We find that this resonant parametric condition is mainly achieved for low energy neutrinos such as the pp-neutrinos and therefore its effect is mostly seen on the total event rates while the other Super-Kamiokande observables are very marginally sensitive to the presence of noise due to the higher energy threshold.

Neutrino scattering on polarized electron target as a test of neutrino magnetic moment

We suggest to use a polarized electron target for improving the sensitivity of the search for the neutrino magnetic moment to the level $\sim 3\cdot10^{-13}μ_B$ in the processes of neutrino (antineutrino) -- electron scattering. It is shown that in this case the weak interaction term in the total cross section is significantly suppressed comparing with unpolarized case, but the electromagnetic term does not depend on electron polarization.

Resonant Spin-Flavor Precession Solution to the Solar Neutrino Problem and electron antineutrinos from the Sun

We have found allowed squared mass difference, magnetic field, mixing angle - regions for the Resonant Spin-Flavor Precession Solution to the Solar Neutrino Problem fitted with the data of all acting solar neutrino experiments. The typical mass difference region varying in dependence on the mixing angle is allowed for some discrete magnetic field regions in a wide range for the fixed neutrino transition magnetic moment. Except of the first allowed range with the lowest field strength the magnetic field amplitude within other discrete allowed regions depend essentially on the shape of a regular magnetic field profile in the convective zone of the Sun. For the non-zero neutrino mixing one can find at 99.9% C.L. an upper limit on the mixing, originated by the non-observation of electron antineutrinos in the SuperKamiokande detector. This limit occurs also sensitive to the magnetic field profile. While at 67% C.L. there is another more stringent upper limit coming from inconsistency of the gallium experiments with others. A new allowed region appears in the case of an additional assumption that the Homestake data are 1.3 times less than the experimental event rate.

A potential test of the CP properties and Majorana nature of neutrinos

The scattering of solar neutrinos on electrons may reveal their CP properties, which are particularly sensitive to their Majorana nature. The cross section is sensitive to the neutrino dipole moments through an interference of electro-magnetic and weak amplitudes. We show how future solar neutrino experiments with good angular resolution and low energy threshold, such as Hellaz, can be sensitive to the resulting azimuthal asymmetries in event number, and could therefore provide valuable information on the CP properties and the nature of the neutrinos, provided the solar magnetic field direction is fixed.

Neutrino Spin-Flavor Conversions and Electron Antineutrino emission from the Sun with Random Magnetic Field

The magnetic field in the solar convective zone has a random small-scale component with the r.m.s. value substancially exceeding the strength of a regular large-scale field. For two Majorana neutrino flavors and two helicities in the presence of a neutrino transition magnetic moment and nonzero neutrino mixing we analize the displacement of the allowed (Delta m^2 - sin^2 2theta)-parameter region reconciled for all Underground experiments with solar neutrinos in dependence on the r.m.s. magnetic field value b. In contrary with the RSFP scenario with a regular large-scale magnetic field, we find an effective production of electron antineutrinos in the Sun even for small neutrino mixing through the cascade conversions like nu_eL -> \bar{nu}_muR -> \bar{nu}_eR. It was found that usual SMA and LMA MSW parameter regions maybe forbidden while opening LOW MSW as the allowed one from the non-observation of \bar{nu}_eR in the SK experiment if random magnetic fields have strengths b > 100 kG and correlation lengths shorter than L_0 < 1000 km.

Probing Neutrino Magnetic Moments at Underground Detectors with Artificial Neutrino Sources

Neutrino-electron scattering can be used to probe neutrino electromagnetic properties at low-threshold underground detectors with good angular and recoil electron energy resolution. We propose to do this using a number of artificial neutrino and anti-neutrino sources such as $^{51}Cr_{24}$ and $^{90}Sr-Y$. The neutrino flux is known to within one percent, in contrast to the reactor case and one can reach lower neutrino energies. For the $^{90}Sr-Y$ source we estimate that the signal expected for a neutrino magnetic moment of $μ_ν=6 \times 10^{-11}μ_{B}$ will be comparable to that expected in the SM and corresponds to a 30% enhancement in the total number of expected events.

Testing for New Physics with Low-Energy Anti-Neutrino Sources: LAMA as a Case Study

Some electroweak models with extended neutral currents, such as those based on the $E_6$ group, lead to an increase of the $\barν-e$ scattering cross section at energies below 100 keV. We propose to search for the heavy Z' boson contribution in an experiment with a high-activity artificial neutrino source and with a large-mass detector. We present the case for the LAMA experiment with a large NaI(Tl) detector located at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory. The neutrino flux is known to within a one percent accuracy, in contrast to the reactor case and one can reach lower neutrino energies. Both features make our proposed experiment more sensitive to extended gauge models, such as the $χ$ model. For a low enough background the sensitivity to the $Z_χ$ boson mass would reach 600 GeV for one year running of the experiment.

MHD waves as a source of matter density fluctuations within solar interior

It is shown that in the presence of a background magnetic field within solar interior a cavity for low frequency MHD eigen modes (with periods 1-10 days) near equatorial plane can arise. The lower boundary of the cavity coincides with the centre of the Sun while the upper one corresponds to the Alfven resonant layer where high accumulation of wave energy takes place. The localization and the width of the Alfven resonance layer are determined by: (i) the node number of eigen modes n = 1, 2,..., (ii) by the angle of oblique propagation of waves with respect to the magnetic field, and (iii) by a low magnitude of the background magnetic field itself, B=1-100 G. The amplitude of eigen oscillations in a resonant layer determines the density fluctuation value that is restricted through the imaginary part of eigen frequences. For large node numbers n>>1 there appear many narrow resonant layers where a neutrino propagates through a large density fluctuation δρ/ρwith the oscillation length that is much bigger than the width of a resonant layer. It is shown that neutrino crosses many such bumps on the exponential background profile that motivates to consider these MHD waves as a plausible matter noise for the MSW solution to the Solar Neutrino Problem (SNP).
