The Hydrodynamic Equations of Superfluid Mixtures in Magnetic Traps

The hydrodynamics equations of binary mixtures of Bose gases, Fermi gases, and mixtures of Bose and Fermi gases in the presence of external potentials are derived. These equations can be applied to current experiments on mixtures of atomic gases confined in magnetic traps.

An Adaptive Finite Element Approach to Atomic-Scale Mechanics - The Quasicontinuum Method

Mixed atomistic and continuum methods offer the possibility of carrying out simulations of material properties at both larger length scales and longer times than direct atomistic calculations. The quasi-continuum method links atomistic and continuum models through the device of the finite element method which permits a reduction of the full set of atomistic degrees of freedom. The present paper gives a full description of the quasicontinuum method, with special reference to the ways in which the method may be used to model crystals with more than a single grain. The formulation is validated in terms of a series of calculations on grain boundary structure and energetics. The method is then illustrated in terms of the motion of a stepped twin boundary where a critical stress for the boundary motion is calculated and nanoindentation into a solid containing a subsurface grain boundary to study the interaction of dislocations with grain boundaries.

Quasicontinuum Models of Interfacial Structure and Deformation

Microscopic models of the interaction between grain boundaries (GBs) and both dislocations and cracks are of importance in understanding the role of microstructure in altering the mechanical properties of a material. A recently developed mixed atomistic and continuum method is extended to examine the interaction between GBs, dislocations and cracks. These calculations elucidate plausible microscopic mechanisms for these defect interactions and allow for the quantitative evaluation of critical parameters such as the stress to nucleate a dislocation at a step on a GB and the force needed to induce GB migration.

Alkali Bose Condensate Mixtures

We show that binary mixtures of Bose-condensates of alkali atoms have a great variety of ground state and vortex structures which can be accessed experimentally by varying the particle numbers of different alkalis. We have constructed a simple algorithm to determine the density profiles of these states, and have worked out their phase diagrams within Thomas-Fermi approximation. Many structures of the alkali binary contain a coexisting region, which is the analog of the long sought $^{3}$He-$^{4}$He interpenetrating superfluids in ultra-low temperature physics.

Local Spin-Gauge Symmetry of the Bose-Einstein Condensates in Atomic Gases

The Bose-Einstein condensates of alkali atomic gases are spinor fields with local ``spin-gauge" symmetry. This symmetry is manifested by a superfluid velocity ${\bf u}_{s}$ (or gauge field) generated by the Berry phase of the spin field. In ``static" traps, ${\bf u}_{s}$ splits the degeneracy of the harmonic energy levels, breaks the inversion symmetry of the vortex nucleation frequency ${\bf Ω}_{c1}$, and can lead to {\em vortex ground states}. The inversion symmetry of ${\bf Ω}_{c1}$, however, is not broken in ``dynamic" traps. Rotations of the atom cloud can be generated by adiabatic effects without physically rotating the entire trap.
