Unperturbed inverse kinematics nucleon knockout measurements with a 48 GeV/c carbon beam

From superconductors to atomic nuclei, strongly-interacting many-body systems are ubiquitous in nature. Measuring the microscopic structure of such systems is a formidable challenge, often met by particle knockout scattering experiments. While such measurements are fundamental for mapping the structure of atomic nuclei, their interpretation is often challenged by quantum mechanical initial- and final-state interactions (ISI/FSI) of the incoming and scattered particles. Here we overcome this fundamental limitation by measuring the quasi-free scattering of 48 GeV/c 12C ions from hydrogen. The distribution of single protons is studied by detecting two protons at large angles in coincidence with an intact 11B nucleus. The 11B detection is shown to select the transparent part of the reaction and exclude the otherwise large ISI/FSI that would break the 11B apart. By further detecting residual 10B and 10Be nuclei, we also identified short-range correlated (SRC) nucleon-nucleon pairs, and provide direct experimental evidence for the separation of the pair wave-function from that of the residual many-body nuclear system. All measured reactions are well described by theoretical calculations that do not contain ISI/FSI distortions. Our results thus showcase a new ability to study the short-distance structure of short-lived radioactive atomic nuclei at the forthcoming FAIR and FRIB facilities. These studies will be pivotal for developing a ground-breaking microscopic understanding of the structure and properties of nuclei far from stability and the formation of visible matter in the universe.

Charm production nearby threshold in pA-interactions at 70 GeV

The results of the SERP-E-184 experiment at the U-70 accelerator (IHEP, Protvino) are presented. Interactions of the 70 GeV proton beam with C, Si and Pb targets were studied to detect decays of charmed $D^0$, $\overline D^0$, $D^+$, $D^-$ mesons and $Λ_c^+$ baryon near their production threshold. Measurements of lifetimes and masses are shown a good agreement with PDG data. The inclusive cross sections of charm production and their A-dependencies were obtained. The yields of these particles are compared with the theoretical predictions and the data of other experiments. The measured cross section of the total open charm production ($σ_{\mathrm {tot}}(c\overline c)$ = 7.1 $\pm $ 2.3(stat) $\pm $1.4(syst) $μ$b/nucleon) at the collision c.m. energy $\sqrt {s}$ = 11.8 GeV is well above the QCD model predictions. The contributions of different species of charmed particles to the total cross section of the open charm production in proton-nucleus interactions vary with energy.

Soft photon registration at Nuclotron

First results of a soft photon yield in nucleus-nuclear interactions at 3.5 GeV per nucleon are presented. These photons have been registered at Nuclotron (LHEP, JINR) by an electromagnetic calorimeter built in the SVD Collaboration. The obtained spectra confirm the excess yield in the energy region less than 50 MeV in comparison with theoretical predictions and agree with previous experiments at high-energy interactions.

Possibilities for reduction of transverse projected emittances by partial removal of transverse to longitudinal beam correlations

We show that if in the particle beam there are linear correlations between energy of particles and their transverse positions and momenta (linear beam dispersions), then the transverse projected emittances always can be reduced by letting the beam to pass through magnetostatic system with specially chosen nonzero lattice dispersions. The maximum possible reduction of the transverse projected emittances occurs when all beam dispersions are zeroed, and the values of the lattice dispersions required for that are completely defined by the values of the beam dispersions and the beam rms energy spread and are independent from any other second-order central beam moments. Besides that, we prove that, alternatively, one can also use the lattice dispersions to remove linear correlations between longitudinal positions of particles and their transverse coordinates (linear beam tilts), but in this situation solution for the lattice dispersions is nonunique and the reduction of the transverse projected emittances is not guaranteed.

Detection of $D^{\pm}$ mesons production in pA-interactions at 70 GeV

The results of analysis SERP-E-184 experiment data, obtained with 70 GeV proton beam irradiation of active target with carbon, silicon and lead plates are presented. For 3-prongs charged charmed mesons decays, event selection criteria were developed and detection efficiency was calculated with detailed simulation using FRITIOF7.02 and GEANT3.21 programs. Signals of decays were found and charm production inclusive cross sections estimated at near threshold energy. The lifetimes and A-dependence of cross section were measured. Yields of D mesons and their ratios in comparison with data of other experiments and theoretical predictions are presented.

Relations between Projected Emittances and Eigenemittances

We give necessary and sufficient conditions that two sets of positive real numbers must satisfy in order to be realizable as eigenemittances and projected emittances of a beam matrix. The information provided by these conditions sets limits on what one can to achieve when designing a beam line to perform advanced emittance manipulations.

Low Sensitivity Option for Transverse Optics of the FLASH Linac at DESY

The aim of the FLASH linac is to create electron bunches of small transverse emittance and high current for the free electron laser facility FLASH at DESY. Available operational experience indicates that in order to optimize SASE signal at different wavelengths or to fine-tune the FEL wavelength, empirical adjustment of the machine parameters is required and, therefore, the sensitivity of the beamline to small changes in the beam energy and in the magnet settings becomes one of the important issues which affects both, the final performance and the reproducibility of the results after breaks in operation. In this article the transverse optics of the FLASH beamline with low sensitivity to changes in beam energy and quadrupole settings is presented. This optics is in operation since spring 2006 and has shown a superior performance with respect to the previous setup of the transverse focusing.

Apochromatic Beam Transport in Drift-Quadrupole Systems

Though a straight drift-quadrupole system can not be made an achromat, there exists an example of a bend-free drift-quadrupole system which can transport certain incoming beam ellipses without introducing first-order chromatic distortions. In this paper we show that such a possibility is not a rare special case, but a general property. For every drift-quadrupole system there exists an unique set of Twiss parameters, which will be transported through that system without first order chromatic distortions. Moreover, we prove that at the same time these Twiss parameters minimize the absolute values of the system chromaticities and also bring the second order effect of the betatron oscillations on the longitudinal dynamics to the minimal possible value.

Error Emittance and Error Twiss Functions in the Problem of Reconstruction of Difference Orbit Parameters by Usage of BPMs with Finite Resolution

The problem of errors, arising due to finite BPM resolution, in the difference orbit parameters, which are found as a least squares fit to the BPM data, is one of the standard problems of the accelerator physics. In this article we present a "dynamical point of view" on this problem, which allows us to describe properties of the BPM measurement system in terms of the usual accelerator physics concepts of emittance and betatron functions.

Large Energy Acceptance Dogleg for the XFEL Injector

The option to install two injectors is foreseen at the European XFEL Facility. The injectors will be located on top of each other in the same building, both with the offset of 2.75 m with respect to the main linac axis. The translation system (dogleg) from the injector axis to the main linac axis has to fulfill very tight requirements of the chromatic properties, because the energy chirp required for the downstream bunch length compression in magnetic chicanes will be created upstream in the injector linac. In this paper we present such an large energy acceptance dogleg and discuss the optical principles which form the basis of its design.

Third-Order Apochromatic Drift-Quadrupole Beamline

In this paper we present the design of a straight drift-quadrupole system which can transport certain beam ellipses (apochromatic beam ellipses) without influence of the second and of the third order chromatic and geometric aberrations of the beamline transfer map.
