Coherent transverse instability of bunched beams in circular accelerators

Coherent transverse oscillations of a bunch in a ring accelerator are considered. Three different models of the bunch are used: a hollow bunch in a square potential well, a square bunch in a parabolic potential well, and a parabolic bunch in a parabolic well. The bunch space-charge field, wakefield, and chromaticity are taken into account in all the cases. The bunch eigenmodes and various instabilities are studied. The results are compared and analyzed to establish the range of applicability of the models. Role of the Landau damping due to dependence of the SC field on the longitudinal coordinate is discussed.

Effect of bunch shape on its TMCI spectrum and threshold with high space charge

Transverse mode coupling instability of bunched beam is investigated in the paper at different form of the bunches with space charge included. Equation of transverse motion of the bunch in parabolic potential well of synchrotron oscillations is derived and analysed. The bunch of constant density (flat bunch) is examined in detail to make comparison with the square well model. It is shown that both models result in very close instability thresholds of the flat bunch. Then different form bunches are investigated in the parabolic potential well. It is shown that decrease of the bunch r.m.s length leads to the growth of its threshold, that is the flat bunch model gives only a minimal estimation of the threshold. The results are treated in terms of Landau damping due to spread of the space charge tune shift.

Transverse mode coupling instability of the bunch with oscillating wake field and space charge

Transverse mode coupling instability of a single bunch caused by oscillating wake field is considered in the paper. The instability threshold is found at different frequencies of the wake with space charge tune shift taken into account. The wake phase advance in the bunch length from 0 up to $4π$ is investigated. It is shown that the space charge can push the instability threshold up or down dependent on the phase advance. Transition region is investigated thoroughly, and simple asymptotic formulas for the threshold are represented.

Threshold of transverse mode coupling instability with arbitrary space charge

Threshold of the transverse mode coupling instability is calculated in frameworks of the square well model at arbitrary value of space charge tune shift. A new method of calculation is developed beyond the traditional expansion technique. The square, resistive, and exponential wakes are investigated. It is shown that the instability threshold goes up without limit when the tune shift increases. A resemblance of the results to conventional case of the parabolic potential well is demonstrated and explained.

TMCI threshold with space charge and different wake fields

Transverse mode coupling instability of a bunch with space charge and wake field is considered within the frameworks of the boxcar model. Eigenfunctions of the bunch without wake are used as a basis for the solution of the equations with the wake field included. A dispersion equation for constant wake is presented in the form of an infinite continued fraction and also as the recursive relation with an arbitrary number of the basis functions. Realistic wake fields are considered as well including resistive wall, square, and oscillating wakes. It is shown that the TMCI threshold of the negative wake grows up in absolute value when the SC tune shift increases. Threshold of positive wake goes down at the increasing SC tune shift. The explanation is developed by an analysis of the bunch spectrum.

Dependence of the TMCI threshold on the space charge tune shift

Transverse mode coupling instability of a bunch with space charge is considered in frameworks of the boxcar model. Presented results demonstrate a monotonous growth of the TMCI threshold at increasing space charge tune shift, and do not support the supposition that the monotony can be violated at a higher SC.

Nonlinear effects at the Fermilab Recycler e-cloud instability

Theoretical analysis of e-cloud instability in the Fermilab Recycler is represented in the paper. The e-cloud in strong magnetic field is treated as a set of immovable snakes each being initiated by some proton bunch. It is shown that the instability arises because of injection errors of the bunches which increase in time and from bunch to bunch along the batch being amplified by the e-cloud electric field. The particular attention is given to nonlinear additions to the cloud field. It is shown that the nonlinearity is the main factor which restricts growth of the bunch amplitude. Possible role of the field free parts of the Recycler id discussed as well. Results of calculations are compared with experimental data demonstrating good correlation.

Transverse Mode Coupling Instability with Space Charge

Transverse mode coupling instability of a bunch with space charge and wake field is considered in frameworks of the boxcar model. Eigenfunctions of the bunch without wake are used as the basis for solution of the equations with the wake field included. Dispersion equation for the bunch eigentunes is obtained in the form of an infinite continued fraction. It is shown that influence of space charge on the instability essentially depends on the wake sign. In particular, threshold of the negative wake increases in absolute value until the space charge tune shift is rather small, and goes to zero at higher space charge. The explanation of this behavior is developed by analysis of the bunch spectrum. A comparison of the results with published articles is represented.

Single bunch transverse instability in a circular accelerator with chromaticity and space charge

The transverse instability of a bunch in a circular accelerator is elaborated in this paper. A new tree-modes model is proposed and developed to describe the most unstable modes of the bunch. This simple and flexible model includes chromaticity and space charge, and can be used with any bunch and wake forms. The dispersion equation for the bunch eigentunes is obtained in form of a third-order algebraic equation. The known head-tail and TMCI modes appear as the limiting cases which are distinctly bounded at zero chromaticity only. It is shown that the instability parameters depend only slightlyon the bunch model but they are rather sensitive to the wake shape. In particular, space charge effects are investigated in the paper and it is shown that their influence depends on sign of wake field enhancing the bunch stability if the wake is negative. The resistive wall wake is considered in detail including a comparison of single and collective effects. A comparison of the results with earlier publications is carried out.

Model of e-cloud instability in the Fermilab Recycler

Simple model of electron cloud is developed in the paper to explain e-cloud instability of bunched proton beam in the Fermilab Recycler. The cloud is presented as an immobile snake in strong vertical magnetic field. The instability is treated as an amplification of the bunch injection errors from the batch head to its tail. Nonlinearity of the e-cloud field is taken into account. Results of calculations are compared with experimental data demonstrating good correlation.

Transverse modes and instabilities of a bunched beam with space charge and resistive wall impedance

Transverse instability of a bunched beam is investigated with synchrotron oscillations, space charge, and resistive wall wakefield taken into account. Boxcar model is used for all-round analysis, and Gaussian distribution is invoked for details. The beam spectrum, instability growth rate and effects of chromaticity are studied in a wide range of parameters, both with head-tail and collective bunch interactions included. Effects of the internal bunch oscillations on the of collective instabilities is investigated thoroughly. Landau damping caused by the space charge tune spread is discussed, and the instability thresholds of different modes of Gaussian bunch are estimated.

The RFOFO Ionization Cooling Ring for Muons

Practical ionization cooling rings could lead to lower cost or improved performance in neutrino factory or muon collider designs. The ring modeled here uses realistic three-dimensional fields. The performance of the ring compares favorably with the linear cooling channel used in the second US Neutrino Factory Study. The normalized 6D emittance of an ideal ring is decreased by a factor of approximately 240, compared with a factor of only 15 for the linear channel. We also examine such \textit{real-world} effects as windows on the absorbers and rf cavities and leaving empty lattice cells for injection and extraction. For realistic conditions the ring decreases the normalized 6D emittance by a factor of 49.
