Limits on light-speed anisotropies from Compton scattering of high-energy electrons

The possibility of anisotropies in the speed of light relative to the limiting speed of electrons is considered. The absence of sidereal variations in the energy of Compton-edge photons at the ESRF's GRAAL facility constrains such anisotropies representing the first non-threshold collision-kinematics study of Lorentz violation. When interpreted within the minimal Standard-Model Extension, this result yields the two-sided limit of 1.6 x 10^{-14} at 95% confidence level on a combination of the parity-violating photon and electron coefficients kappa_{o+} and c. This new constraint provides an improvement over previous bounds by one order of magnitude.

A new limit on the light speed isotropy from the GRAAL experiment at the ESRF

When the electrons stored in the ring of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF, Grenoble) scatter on a laser beam (Compton scattering in flight) the lower energy of the scattered electron spectra, the Compton Edge (CE), is given by the two body photon-electron relativistic kinematics and depends on the velocity of light. A precision measurement of the position of this CE as a function of the daily variations of the direction of the electron beam in an absolute reference frame provides a one-way test of Relativistic Kinematics and the isotropy of the velocity of light. The results of GRAAL-ESRF measurements improve the previously existing one-way limits, thus showing the efficiency of this method and the interest of further studies in this direction.

Spin Entanglement in supramolecular structures

Molecular spin clusters are mesoscopic systems whose structural and physical features can be tailored at the synthetic level. Besides, their quantum behavior is directly accessible in laboratory and their magnetic properties can be rationalized in terms of microscopic spin models. Thus they represent an ideal playground within solid state systems to test concepts in quantum mechanics. One intriguing challenge is to control entanglement between molecular spins. Here we show how this goal can be pursued by discussing specific examples and referring to recent achievements.

About the strength of correlation effects in the electronic structure of iron

The strength of electronic correlation effects in the spin-dependent electronic structure of ferromagnetic bcc Fe(110) has been investigated by means of spin and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The experimental results are compared to theoretical calculations within the three-body scattering approximation and within the dynamical mean-field theory, together with one-step model calculations of the photoemission process. This comparison indicates that the present state of the art many-body calculations, although improving the description of correlation effects in Fe, give too small mass renormalizations and scattering rates thus demanding more refined many-body theories including non-local fluctuations.

Lowering the Light Speed Isotropy Limit: European Synchrotron Radiation Facility Measurements

The measurement of the Compton edge of the scattered electrons in GRAAL facility in European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble with respect to the Cosmic Microwave Background dipole reveals up to 10 sigma variations larger than the statistical errors. We now show that the variations are not due to the frequency variations of the accelerator. The nature of Compton edge variations remains unclear, thus outlining the imperative of dedicated studies of light speed anisotropy.

Measurement of eta photoproduction on the proton from threshold to 1500 MeV

Beam asymmetry and differential cross section for the reaction gamma+p->eta+p were measured from production threshold to 1500 MeV photon laboratory energy. The two dominant neutral decay modes of the eta meson, eta->2g and eta->3pi0, were analyzed. The full set of measurements is in good agreement with previously published results. Our data were compared with three models. They all fit satisfactorily the results but their respective resonance contributions are quite different. The possible photoexcitation of a narrow state N(1670) was investigated and no evidence was found.

Eta photoproduction off the neutron at GRAAL

The gamma n -> eta n quasi-free cross section reveals a resonant structure at W ~ 1.675 GeV. This structure may be a manifestation of a baryon resonance. A priori its properties, the possibly narrow width and the strong photocoupling to the neutron, look surprising. This structure may also signal the existence of a narrow state.

Probing the Light Speed Anisotropy with respect to the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation Dipole

We have studied the angular fluctuations in the speed of light with respect to the apex of the dipole of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation using the experimental data obtained with GRAAL facility, located at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble. The measurements were based on the stability of the Compton edge of laser photons scattered on the 6 GeV monochromatic electron beam. The results enable to obtain a conservative constraint on the anisotropy in the light speed variations Δc(θ)/c < 3 10^{-12}, i.e. with higher precision than from previous experiments.

The coordination dependence of electric-field gradients and hyperfine fields at 5sp impurities on fcc metal surfaces

We present a comparison between accurate \textit{ab initio} calculations and a high-quality experimental data set (1986-2002) of electric-field gradients and magnetic hyperfine fields of Cd at different sites on Ni, Cu, Pd and Ag surfaces. Experiments found a systematic rule to assign surface sites on (100) and (111) surfaces based on the main component of the electric-field gradient, a rule that does not work for (110) surfaces. Our calculations show that this particular rule is a manifestation of a more general underlying systematic behavior. When looked upon from this point of view, (100), (111) \emph{and} (110) surfaces behave in precisely the same way. The experimentally observed parabolic coordination number dependence of the Cd magnetic hyperfine field at Ni surfaces is verified as a general trend, but we demonstrate that individual cases can significantly deviate from it. It is shown that the hyperfine fields of other 5sp impurities at Ni surfaces have their own, typical coordination number dependence. A microscopic explanation for the different dependencies is given in terms of the details of the s-DOS near the Fermi level.

Isospin effects on two-particle correlation functions in E/A = 61 MeV 36Ar + 112,124Sn reactions

Small-angle, two-particle correlation functions have been measured for 36Ar+ 112,124Sn collisions at E/A = 61 MeV. Total momentum gated neutron-proton (np) and proton-proton (pp) correlations are stronger for the 124Sn-target. Some of the correlation functions for particle pairs involving deuterons or tritons (nd, pt, and nt) also show a dependence on the isospin of the emitting source.

Structure optimization effects on the electronic properties of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$

We present detailed first-principles calculations for the normal state electronic properties of the high T$_C$ superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$, by means of the linearized augmented plane wave (LAPW) method within the framework of density functional theory (DFT). As a first step, the body centered tetragonal (BCT) cell has been adopted, and optimized regarding its volume, $c/a$ ratio and internal atomic positions by total energy and force minimizations. The full optimization of the BCT cell leads to small but visible changes in the topology of the Fermi surface, rounding the shape of CuO$_2$ barrels, and causing both the BiO bands, responsible for the pockets near the \textit{M} 2D symmetry point, to dip below the Fermi level. We have then studied the influence of the distortions in the BiO plane observed in nature by means of a $\sqrt{2}\times\sqrt{2}$ orthorhombic cell (AD-ORTH) with $Bbmb$ space group. Contrary to what has been observed for the Bi-2201 compound, we find that for Bi-2212 the distortion does not sensibly shift the BiO bands which retain their metallic character. As a severe test for the considered structures we present Raman-active phonon frequencies ($q = 0$) and eigenvectors calculated within the frozen-phonon approximation. Focussing on the totally symmetric A$_{g}$ modes, we observe that for a reliable attribution of the peaks observed in Raman experiments, both $c$- and a-axis vibrations must be taken into account, the latter being activated by the in-plane orthorhombic distortion.

Precise Measurement of Sigma Beam Asymmetry for Positive Pion Photoproduction on the Proton from 800 to 1500 Mev

The Sigma beam asymmetry for positive pion photoproduction on the proton has been measured over an angular range of 40-170 deg at photon energies from 0.8 to 1.5 GeV. The resulting data set includes 237 accurate points, 136 of these belonging to an almost unexplored domain above 1.05 GeV. Data of such high precision provide severe constraints for partial wave analyses. The influence of this experiment on the GW multipole analysis is demonstrated. Significant changes are found in multipoles connected to the S31(1620) and P13(1720) resonances. Comparisons using the MAID analysis are also presented.

Broken-Bond Rule for the Surface Energies of Noble Metals

Using two different full-potential ab-initio techniques we introduce a simple, universal rule based on the number of broken first-neighbor bonds to determine the surface energies of the three noble metals Cu, Ag and Au. When a bond is broken, the rearrangement of the electronic charge for these metals does not lead to a change of the remaining bonds. Thus the energy needed to break a bond is independent of the surface orientation. This novel finding can lead to the development of simple models to describe the energetics of a surface like step and kink formation, crystal growth, alloy formation, equilibrium shape of mesoscopic crystallites and surface faceting.

Differential cross section measurement of eta photoproduction on the proton from threshold to 1100 MeV

The differential cross section for the reaction p(gamma, eta p) has been measured from threshold to 1100 MeV photon laboratory energy. For the first time, the region of the S11(1535) resonance is fully covered in a photoproduction experiment and allows a precise extraction of its parameters at the photon point. Above 1000 MeV, S-wave dominance vanishes while a P-wave contribution is observed whose nature will have to be clarified. These high precision data together with the already measured beam asymmetry data will provide stringent constraints on the extraction of new couplings of baryon resonances to the eta meson.

Deuteron photo-disintegration with polarised photons in the energy range 30 - 50 MeV

The reaction d(\vecγ,np) has been studied using the tagged and polarised LADON gamma ray beam at an energy 30 - 50 MeV to investigate the existence of narrow dibaryonic resonances recently suggested from the experimental measurements in a different laboratory. The beam was obtained by Compton back-scattering of laser light on the electrons of the storage ring ADONE. Photo-neutron yields were measured at five neutron angle \vartheta_n = 22, 55.5, 90, 125 and 157 degrees in the center of mass system. Our results do not support the existence of such resonances.
