On the dynamics of color magnetic monopoles in full QCD

We present first results on the dynamics of monopoles in full QCD with N_f=2 flavors of dynamical quarks. Among the quantities being studied are the monopole density and the monopole screening length, the static potential as well as the profile of the color electric flux tube. Furthermore, we derive the low-energy effective monopole action.

Glueball and gluelump spectrum in abelian projected QCD

We study glueball and gluelump spectra calculated after abelian projection in both quenched and $N_f=2$ full QCD. The abelian projection is made after MA gauge fixing. We demonstrate that both spectra can be recovered despite the problem with positivity. We suggest the interpretation of some of the gluelump states in the language of the abelian projected theory.

Continuum limit in abelian projected SU(2) lattice gauge theory

We study the continuum limit of the abelian string tension and the density of abelian monopoles calculated after carefully fixing the maximal abelian gauge by employing the simulated annealing algorithm. We present the evidence that the abelian string tension converges to the nonabelian one in the continuum limit. For the monopole density we confirm earlier findings that the density of the properly defined infrared monopoles has correct scaling while the total density seems divergent in the continuum limit due to ultraviolate contributions. We also compare with results obtained with the usual iterative gauge fixing algorithm.

Is the chiral U(1) theory trivial?

The chiral U(1) theory differs from the corresponding vector theory by an imaginary contribution to the effective action which amounts to a phase factor in the partition function. The vector theory, i.e. QED, is known to be trivial in the continuum limit. It is argued that the presence of the phase factor will not alter this result and the chiral theory is non-interacting as well.

On the eta-invariant in the 4D chiral U(1) theory

In contrast to its counterpart in a vector theory, the effective action of a chiral gauge theory may have a non-vanishing imaginary part. It consists of the so-called Chern-Simons form, which encodes the anomaly and a gauge invariant piece related to the eta-invariant of some extended Dirac operator. We investigate the imaginary part of the effective action in the 4D chiral U(1) theory within the continuum fermion approach. Perturbative analysis indicates in general a non-vanishing imaginary part of the effective action. However, after anomaly cancellation we find only a small value of the imaginary part for the investigated configurations.

Lattice chiral fermions in the background of non-trivial topology

We address the problem of numerical simulations in the background non-trivial topology in the chiral Schwinger model. An effective fermionic action is derived which is in accord with established analytical results, and which satisfies the anomaly equation. We describe a numerical evaluation of baryon number violating amplitudes, specifically the 't Hooft vertex.

Chiral Fermions on the Lattice

A recently proposed method for regularizing chiral gauge theories non-perturbatively is discussed in detail. The result is an effective action which can be computed from the lattice gauge field, and which is suited for numerical simulations.

Lattice Chiral Schwinger Model: Selected Results

We discuss a method for regularizing chiral gauge theories. The idea is to formulate the gauge fields on the lattice, while the fermion determinant is regularized and computed in the continuum. A simple effective action emerges which lends itself to numerical simulations.

Lattice Chiral Schwinger Model in the Continuum Formulation

We pursue further an approach to lattice chiral fermions in which the fermions are treated in the continuum. To render the effective action gauge invariant, counterterms have to be introduced. We determine the counterterms for smooth gauge fields, both analytically and numerically. The final result is that the imaginary part of the effective action can be computed analytically from the lattice gauge field, while the real part is given by one half of the action of the corresponding vector model.

Instantons or Monopoles? Dyons

Non-abelian gauge theories can be cast into abelian gauge theories with monopoles. We ask what becomes of the instantons after abelian projection. Instantons are found to consist of closed dyon loops. It is shown that the electric charge of the dyons is quantized. The implication of this result for the dynamics of the Yang-Mills vacuum is briefly discussed.

Dual Superconductor Scenario of Confinement: A Systematic Study of Gribov Copy Effects

We perform a study of the effects from maximal abelian gauge Gribov copies in the context of the dual superconductor scenario of confinement, on the basis of a novel approach for estimation of systematic uncertainties from incomplete gauge fixing. We present numerical results, in SU(2) lattice gauge theory, using the overrelaxed simulated annealing gauge fixing algorithm. We find abelian and non-abelian string tensions to differ significantly, their ratio being 0.92(4) at BETA = 2.5115. An approximate factorization of the abelian potential into monopole and photon contributions has been confirmed, the former giving rise to the abelian string tension.

Monopoles in Compact U(1) -- Anatomy of the Phase Transition

We present evidence that the existence of a first order phase transition in compact U(1) with Wilson action is not related to monopole loops wrapping around the toroidal lattice, as has been previously suggested. Our analysis is based on the suppression of such loops by `soft boundary conditions' that correspond to an infinitely large chemical potential for the monopoles on the boundary, during the updating process. It is observed that the double peak structure characteristic for the first order phase transition reappears at sufficiently large lattice sizes and separations from the lattice boundary.

First-Order Signals in Compact QED with Monopole Suppressed Boundaries

Pure gauge compact QED on hypercubic lattices is considered with periodically closed monopole currents suppressed. We compute observables on sublattices which are nested around the centre of the lattice in order to locate regions where translation symmetry is approximately recovered. Our Monte Carlo simulations on $24^4$-lattices give indications for a first-order nature of the U(1) phase transition.

New algorithm for gauge fixing in SU(2) lattice gauge theory

An overrelaxed variant of simulated annealing is applied to the problem of maximally abelian gauge fixing. The superiority of this algorithm over the commonly used relaxation procedure is demonstrated. Biases on non gauge invariant quantities due to gauge fixing ambiguities are discussed.
