A Mond Programme from Einstein Hilbert Action

In the usual derivation of Einstein's equation from action, the surface terms are neglected. Hawking \cite{hw} gave a derivation of the gravitational Hamiltonian keeping all surface terms. Using such surface terms Easson et.al.\cite{ea} showed that Friedmann equation could get modified and using the modified Friedmann equation they could explain the cosmic acceleration. We study the effect of surface terms on a galactic scale and find that the classical limit of the modified Friedmann equation will lead to a MOND like acceleration term.

SDSS J092712.64+294344.0: recoiling black hole or merging galaxies?

We report long-slit spectroscopic observations of SDSS J092712+294344 carried-out at the recently commissioned 2m telescope in IUCAA Girawali Observatory, India. This AGN-like source is known to feature three sets of emission lines at zem = 0.6972, 0.7020 and 0.7128. Different scenarios such as a recoiling black hole after asymmetric emission of gravitational waves, binary black holes and possible merging systems are proposed for this object. We test these scenarios by comparing our spectra with that from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), obtained 4 years prior to our observations. Comparing the redshifts of [OIII]4960,5008 we put a 3 sigma limit on the relative acceleration to be less than 32 km s^-1 yr^-1 between different emitting regions. Using the 2D spectra obtained at different position angles we show that the [OIII]5008 line from the zem = 0.7128 component is extended beyond the spectral point spread function. We infer the linear extent of this line emitting region is ~8 kpc. We also find a tentative evidence for an offset between the centroid of the [OIII]5008 line at zem = 0.7128 and the QSO trace when the slit is aligned at a position angle of 299 degrees. This corresponds to the zem = 0.7128 system being at an impact parameter of ~1 kpc with respect to the zem = 0.6972 in the north west direction. Based on our observations we conclude that the binary black hole model is most unlikely. The spatial extent and the sizes are consistent with both black hole recoil and merging scenarios.

Quasinormal modes of RN black hole space time with cosmic string in a Dirac field

We evaluate quasinormal mode frequencies for RN black hole space times with cosmic string perturbed by a massless Dirac field, using Pöschl-Teller potential method. We find that only in the case of RN black hole having small charge, the effect due to cosmic string will dominate when perturbed by a negatively charged Dirac field, but if we are perturbing with positively charged Dirac field decay will be less in the case of black hole having cosmic string compared to the RN black hole without string

Quasi-normal modes of spherically symmetric black hole spacetimes with cosmic string in a Dirac field

Dirac equation for a general black hole metric having a cosmic string is derived. The quasi-normal mode frequencies for Schwarzschild, RN extremal, SdS and near extremal SdS black hole space-times with cosmic string perturbed by a massless Dirac field are obtained using WKB approximation and found that in all these cases, decay is less in black holes having cosmic string compared to black holes with out string.

Generalized second law and entropy bound for a Reissner- Nordström black hole

It has been conjectured that black hole interacting with its surroundings will obey the Generalized Second Law ($GSL$) of thermodynamics. Conservation of $GSL$ is due to the fully thermal nature of Hawking radiation and an upper bound on entropy. We study these aspects for a Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot{\textbf{o}}$m ($RN$)black hole and conjecture that $GSL$ may be conserved if the equation of state of radiation near the horizon is modified. An upper bound on $S/E$, similar to the Bekenstein form evolves in the calculation.

Modulational instability of optical beams in photorefractive media in the presence of two wave and four wave mixing effects

Modulational instability in a photorefractive medium is studied in the presence of two wave mixing. We then propose and derive a model for forward four wave mixing in the photorefractive medium and investigate the modulational instability induced by four wave mixing effects. By using the standard linear stability analysis the instability gain is obtained. In both the cases, the geometry is such that the effect of self-phase-modulation self-focusing is suppressed and only the holographic focusing nonlinearity is acting.

Static Black Hole dressed with a massive Scalar field

A four-dimensional static black hole solution of Einstein equation conformally coupled to a massive and self interacting scalar field is obtained. A nontrivial scalar solution proposes a weak scalar hair. A dressed black hole shows a trace of scalar charge in the metric signalling the presence of scalar hair. A number of metrics with regular horizons and temperatures are also proposed.

Phase effects on synchronization by dynamical relaying in delay-coupled systems

Synchronization in an array of mutually coupled systems with a finite time-delay in coupling is studied using Josephson junction as a model system. The sum of the transverse Lyapunov exponents is evaluated as a function of the parameters by linearizing the equation about the synchronization manifold. The dependence of synchronization on damping parameter, coupling constant and time-delay is studied numerically. The change in the dynamics of the system due to time-delay and phase difference between the applied fields is studied. The case where a small frequency detuning between the applied fields is also discussed.

Phase synchronization in an array of driven Josephson junctions

We consider an array of N Josephson junctions connected in parallel and explore the condition for chaotic synchronization. It is found that the outer junctions can be synchronized while they remain uncorrelated to the inner ones when an external biasing is applied. The stability of the solution is found out for the outer junctions in the synchronization manifold. Symmetry considerations lead to a situation wherein the inner junctions can synchronize for certain values of parameter. In the presence of a phase difference between the applied fields, all the junctions exhibit phase synchronization. It is also found that chaotic motion changes to periodic in the presence of phase differences.

Massive Charged Scalar Quasinormal Modes of Reissner-Nördstrom Black Hole Surrounded by Quintessence

We evaluate the complex frequencies of the normal modes for the massive charged scalar field perturbations around a Reissner-Nördstrom black hole surrounded by a static and spherically symmetric quintessence using third order WKB approximation approach. Due to the presence of quintessence, quasinormal frequencies damp more slowly. We studied the variation of quasinormal frequencies with charge of the black bole, mass and charge of perturbating scalar field and the quintessential state parameter.

Absorption cross section of RN black hole

The behavior of a charged scalar field in the RN black hole space time is studied using WKB approximation. In the present work it is assumed that matter waves can get reflected from the event horizon. Using this effect, the Hawking temperature and the absorption cross section for RN black hole placed in a charged scalar field are calculated. The absorption cross section $σ_{abs}$ is found to be inversely proportional to square of the Hawking temperature of the black hole.

Photometric Scaling Relations for Bulges of Galaxies

We study the photometric parameters of the bulges of galaxies of different Hubble types including ellipticals, lenticulars, early and late type spirals and early type dwarf galaxies. Analyzing the distributions of various photometric parameters, and two- and three-dimensional correlations between them, we find that there is a difference in the correlations exhibited by bright (M_K < -22) and faint bulges, irrespective of their Hubble type. Importantly, the bright bulges, which include typically E/S0 galaxies and bulges of early type spirals, are tightly distributed around a common photometric plane (PP), while their fainter counter parts, mainly bulges of late type spirals and dwarf galaxies show significant deviation from the planar distribution. We show that the specific entropy, determined from the bulge structural parameters, systematically increases as we move from late to early Hubble types. We interpret this as evidence for hierarchical merging and passive evolution scenarios for bright and faint bulges respectively.

Phase transitions and bubble nucleations for a phi^6 model in curved spacetime

Condsidering a massive self-interacting phi ^6 scalar field coupled arbitrarily to a (2+1) dimensional Bianchi type-I spacetime, we evaluate the one-loop effective potential. It is found that phi ^6 potential can be regularized in (2+1) dimensional curved spacetime. A finite expression for the energy-momentum tensor is obtained for this model. Evaluating the finite temperature effective potential, the temperature dependence of phase transitions is studied. The crucial dependence of the phase transitions on the spacetime curvature and on the coupling to gravity are also verified. We also discuss the nucleation of bubbles in a phi ^6 model. It is found that there exists an exact solution for the damped motion of the bubble in the thin wall regime.

First Order Phase Transitions in a Bianchi type-I universe

Considering the theory of induced gravity coupled to matter fields, taking the $ϕ^6$ interaction potential model we evaluate the one-loop effective potential in a (3+1)dimensional Bianchi type-I spacetime. It is proved that the $ϕ^6$ theory can be regularised in (3+1)dimensional curved spacetime. We evaluate the finite temperature effective potential and study the temperature dependence of phase transitions. The nature of phase transitions in the early universe is clarified to be of first order. The effects of spacetime curvature and arbitrary field coupling on the phase transitions in the early universe are also discussed.
