Hermitian structures on a class of quaternionic Kähler manifolds

Any quaternionic Kähler manifold $(\bar N,g_{\bar N},\mathcal Q)$ equipped with a Killing vector field $X$ with nowhere vanishing quaternionic moment map carries an integrable almost complex structure $J_1$ that is a section of the quaternionic structure $\mathcal Q$. Using the HK/QK correspondence, we study properties of the almost Hermitian structure $(g_{\bar N},\tilde J_1)$ obtained by changing the sign of $J_1$ on the distribution spanned by $X$ and $J_1X$. In particular, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for its integrability and for it being conformally Kähler. We show that for a large class of quaternionic Kähler manifolds containing the one-loop deformed c-map spaces, the structure $\tilde J_1$ is integrable. We do also show that the integrability of $\tilde J_1$ implies that $(g_{\bar N},\tilde J_1)$ is conformally Kähler in dimension four, but not in higher dimensions. In the special case of the one-loop deformation of the quaternionic Kähler symmetric spaces dual to the complex Grassmannians of two-planes we construct a third canonical Hermitian structure $(g_{\bar N},\hat J_1)$. Finally, we give a complete local classification of quaternionic Kähler four-folds for which $\tilde J_1$ is integrable and show that these are either locally symmetric or carry a cohomogeneity $1$ isometric action generated by one of the Lie algebras $\mathfrak{o}(2)\ltimes\mathfrak{heis}_3(\mathbb R)$, $\mathfrak{u}(2)$, or $\mathfrak{u}(1,1)$.

Complete quaternionic Kähler manifolds with finite volume ends

We construct examples of complete quaternionic Kähler manifolds with an end of finite volume, which are not locally homogeneous. The manifolds are aspherical with fundamental group which is up to an infinite cyclic extension a semi-direct product of a lattice in a semi-simple group with a lattice in a Heisenberg group. Their universal covering is a cohomogeneity one deformation of a symmetric space of non-compact type.

Curvature of quaternionic Kähler manifolds with $S^1$-symmetry

We study the behavior of connections and curvature under the HK/QK correspondence, proving simple formulae expressing the Levi-Civita connection and Riemann curvature tensor on the quaternionic Kähler side in terms of the initial hyper-Kähler data. Our curvature formula refines a well-known decomposition theorem due to Alekseevsky. As an application, we compute the norm of the curvature tensor for a series of complete quaternionic Kähler manifolds arising from flat hyper-Kähler manifolds. We use this to deduce that these manifolds are of cohomogeneity one.

Symmetries of quaternionic Kähler manifolds with $S^1$-symmetry

We study symmetry properties of quaternionic Kähler manifolds obtained by the HK/QK correspondence. To any Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ of infinitesimal automorphisms of the initial hyper-Kähler data we associate a central extension of $\mathfrak{g}$, acting by infinitesimal automorphisms of the resulting quaternionic Kähler manifold. More specifically, we study the metrics obtained by the one-loop deformation of the $c$-map construction, proving that the Lie algebra of infinitesimal automorphisms of the initial projective special Kähler manifold gives rise to a Lie algebra of Killing fields of the corresponding one-loop deformed $c$-map space. As an application, we show that this construction increases the cohomogeneity of the automorphism groups by at most one. In particular, if the initial manifold is homogeneous then the one-loop deformed metric is of cohomogeneity at most one. As an example, we consider the one-loop deformation of the symmetric quaternionic Kähler metric on $SU(n,2)/S(U(n)\times U(2))$, which we prove is of cohomogeneity exactly one. This family generalizes the so-called universal hypermultiplet ($n=1$), for which we determine the full isometry group.

On certain Kähler quotients of quaternionic Kähler manifolds

We prove that, given a certain isometric action of a two-dimensional Abelian group A on a quaternionic Kähler manifold M which preserves a submanifold N\subset M, the quotient M'=N/A has a natural Kähler structure. We verify that the assumptions on the group action and on the submanifold N\subset M are satisfied for a large class of examples obtained from the supergravity c-map. In particular, we find that all quaternionic Kähler manifolds M in the image of the c-map admit an integrable complex structure compatible with the quaternionic structure, such that N\subset M is a complex submanifold. Finally, we discuss how the existence of the Kähler structure on M' is required by the consistency of spontaneous {\cal N}=2 to {\cal N}=1 supersymmetry breaking.

On pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with many Killing spinors

Let $M$ be a pseudo-Riemannian spin manifold of dimension $n$ and signature $s$ and denote by $N$ the rank of the real spinor bundle. We prove that $M$ is locally homogeneous if it admits more than ${3/4}N$ independent Killing spinors with the same Killing number, unless $n\equiv 1 \pmod 4$ and $s\equiv 3 \pmod 4$. We also prove that $M$ is locally homogeneous if it admits $k_+$ independent Killing spinors with Killing number $λ$ and $k_-$ independent Killing spinors with Killing number $-λ$ such that $k_++k_->{3/2}N$, unless $n\equiv s\equiv 3\pmod 4$. Similarly, a pseudo-Riemannian manifold with more than ${3/4}N$ independent \emph{conformal} Killing spinors is \emph{conformally} locally homogeneous. For (positive or negative) definite metrics, the bounds ${3/4}N$ and ${3/2}N$ in the above results can be relaxed to ${1/2}N$ and $N$, respectively. Furthermore, we prove that a pseudo-Riemannnian spin manifold with more than ${3/4}N$ parallel spinors is flat and that ${1/4}N$ parallel spinors suffice if the metric is definite. Similarly, a Riemannnian spin manifold with more than ${3/8}N$ Killing spinors with the Killing number $λ\in \bR$ has constant curvature $4λ^2$. For Lorentzian or negative definite metrics the same is true with the bound ${1/2}N$. Finally, we give a classification of (not necessarily complete) Riemannian manifolds admitting Killing spinors, which provides an inductive construction of such manifolds.

Cones over pseudo-Riemannian manifolds and their holonomy

By a classical theorem of Gallot (1979), a Riemannian cone over a complete Riemannian manifold is either flat or has irreducible holonomy. We consider metric cones with reducible holonomy over pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. First we describe the local structure of the base of the cone when the holonomy of the cone is decomposable. For instance, we find that the holonomy algebra of the base is always the full pseudo-orthogonal Lie algebra. One of the global results is that a cone over a compact and complete pseudo-Riemannian manifold is either flat or has indecomposable holonomy. Then we analyse the case when the cone has indecomposable but reducible holonomy, which means that it admits a parallel isotropic distribution. This analysis is carried out, first in the case where the cone admits two complementary distributions and, second for Lorentzian cones. We show that the first case occurs precisely when the local geometry of the base manifold is para-Sasakian and that of the cone is para-Kählerian. For Lorentzian cones we get a complete description of the possible (local) holonomy algebras in terms of the metric of the base manifold.

Special complex manifolds

We introduce the notion of a special complex manifold: a complex manifold (M,J) with a flat torsionfree connection \nabla such that (\nabla J) is symmetric. A special symplectic manifold is then defined as a special complex manifold together with a \nabla-parallel symplectic form ω. This generalises Freed's definition of (affine) special Kähler manifolds. We also define projective versions of all these geometries. Our main result is an extrinsic realisation of all simply connected (affine or projective) special complex, symplectic and Kähler manifolds. We prove that the above three types of special geometry are completely solvable, in the sense that they are locally defined by free holomorphic data. In fact, any special complex manifold is locally realised as the image of a holomorphic 1-form α: C^n \to T^* C^n. Such a realisation induces a canonical \nabla-parallel symplectic structure on M and any special symplectic manifold is locally obtained this way. Special Kähler manifolds are realised as complex Lagrangian submanifolds and correspond to closed forms α. Finally, we discuss the natural geometric structures on the cotangent bundle of a special symplectic manifold, which generalise the hyper-Kähler structure on the cotangent bundle of a special Kähler manifold.

Killing spinors are Killing vector fields in Riemannian Supergeometry

A supermanifold M is canonically associated to any pseudo Riemannian spin manifold (M_0,g_0). Extending the metric g_0 to a field g of bilinear forms g(p) on T_p M, p\in M_0, the pseudo Riemannian supergeometry of (M,g) is formulated as G-structure on M, where G is a supergroup with even part G_0\cong Spin(k,l); (k,l) the signature of (M_0,g_0). Killing vector fields on (M,g) are, by definition, infinitesimal automorphisms of this G-structure. For every spinor field s there exists a corresponding odd vector field X_s on M. Our main result is that X_s is a Killing vector field on (M,g) if and only if s is a twistor spinor. In particular, any Killing spinor s defines a Killing vector field X_s.
