Topological Pauli Phase and Fractional Quantization of Orbital Angular Momentum in the Problems of Classical and Quantum Physics

Physical problems for which the existence of non-trivial topological Pauli phase (i.e. fractional quantization of angular orbital angular momenta that is possible in 2D case) is essential are discussed within the framework of two-dimensional Helmholtz, Schroedinger and Dirac equations. As examples in classical field theory we consider a "wedge problem" -- a description of a field generated by a point charge between two conducting half-planes -- and a Fresnel diffraction from knife-edge. In few-electron circular quantum dots the choice between integer and half-integer quantization of orbital angular momenta is defined by the Pauli principle. This is in line with precise experimental data for the ground state energy of such quantum dots in a perpendicular magnetic field. In a gapless graphene, as in the case of gapped one, in the presence of overcharged impurity this problem can be solved experimentally, e.g., using the method of scanning tunnel spectroscopy.

On the design of experiments to study extreme field limits

We propose experiments on the collision of high intensity electromagnetic pulses with electron bunches and on the collision of multiple electromagnetic pulses for studying extreme field limits in the nonlinear interaction of electromagnetic waves. The effects of nonlinear QED will be revealed in these laser plasma experiments.

Boost modes for a massive fermion field

We have shown that Wightman function of a free quantum field generates any complete set of solutions of relativistic wave equations. Using this approach we have constructed the complete set of solutions to 2d Dirac equation consisting of eigenfunctions of the generator of Lorentz rotations (boost operator). It is shown that at the surface of the light cone the boost modes for a fermion field contain $δ$-function of a complex argument. Due to the presence of such singularity exclusion even of a single mode with an arbitrary value of the boost quantum number makes the set of boost modes incomplete.

Multiple colliding electromagnetic pulses: a way to lower the threshold of $e^+e^-$ pair production from vacuum

The scheme of simultaneous multiple pulse focusing on one spot naturally arises from the structural features of projected new laser systems, such as ELI and HiPER. It is shown that the multiple pulse configuration is beneficial for observing $e^+e^-$ pair production from vacuum under the action of sufficiently strong electromagnetic fields. The field of the focused pulses is described using a realistic three-dimensional model based on an exact solution of the Maxwell equations. The $e^+e^-$ pair production threshold in terms of electromagnetic field energy can be substantially lowered if, instead of one or even two colliding pulses, multiple pulses focused on one spot are used. The multiple pulse interaction geometry gives rise to subwavelength field features in the focal region. These features result in the production of extremely short $e^+e^-$ bunches.

Strong Field Ionization Rate for Arbitrary Laser Frequencies

A simple, analytical, nonrelativistic ionization rate formula for atoms and positive ions in intense ultraviolet and x-ray electromagnetic fields is derived. The rate is valid at arbitrary values of the Keldysh parameter and confirmed by results from ab initio numerical solutions of the single active electron, time-dependent Schroedinger equation. The proposed rate is particularly relevant for experiments employing the new free electron laser (FEL) sources under construction worldwide.

Quantum Dot Version of Berry's Phase: Half-Integer Orbital Angular Momenta

We show that Berry's geometrical (topological) phase for circular quantum dots with an odd number of electrons is equal to πand that eigenvalues of the orbital angular momentum run over half-integer values. The non-zero value of the Berry's phase is provided by axial symmetry and two-dimensionality of the system. Its particular value (π) is fixed by the Pauli exclusion principle. Our conclusions agree with the experimental results of T. Schmidt {\it at el}, \PR B {\bf 51}, 5570 (1995), which can be considered as the first experimental evidence for the existence of a new realization of Berry's phase and half-integer values of the orbital angular momentum in a system of an odd number of electrons in circular quantum dots.

On e^+e^- pair production by a focused laser pulse in vacuum

The probability of electron-positron pair creation by a focused laser pulse is calculated. For description of the focused laser pulse we use a 3-dimensional model of the electromagnetic field which is based on an exact solution of Maxwell equations. There exists two types of focused waves: e- and h-polarized waves with only either electric, or magnetic vector being transverse respectively. It is shown that pair production is possible only in $e$-polarized electromagnetic wave. The dependence of the pair production probability on the intensity of the laser pulse is obtained. It is argued that there exists a natural physical limit for attainable focused laser pulse intensities. This limit is posed by the pulse energy loss due to the effect of pair creation.

Unruh quantization in presence of a condensate

We have shown that the Unruh quantization scheme can be realized in Minkowski spacetime in the presence of Bose-Einstein condensate containing infinite average number of particles in the zero boost mode and located basically inside the light cone. Unlike the case of an empty Minkowski spacetime the condensate provides the boundary conditions necessary for the Fulling quantization of the part of the field restricted only to the Rindler wedge of Minkowski spacetime.

Pair creation by homogeneous electric field from the point of view of an accelerated observer

With a special choice of gauge the operator of the Klein-Fock-Gordon equation in homogeneous electric field respects boost symmetry. Using this symmetry we obtain solutions for the scalar massive field equation in such a background (boost modes in the electric field). We calculate the spectrum of particles created by the electric field, as seen by an accelerated observer at spatial infinity of the right wedge of Minkowski spacetime. It is shown that the spectrum and the total number of created pairs measured by a remote uniformly accelerated observer in Minkowski spacetime are precisely the same as for inertial observers.

An example of a uniformly accelerated particle detector with non-Unruh response

We propose a scalar background in Minkowski spacetime imparting constant proper acceleration to a classical particle. In contrast to the case of a constant electric field the proposed scalar potential does not create particle-antiparticle pairs. Therefore an elementary particle accelerated by such field is a more appropriate candidate for an "Unruh-detector" than a particle moving in a constant electric field. We show that the proposed detector does not reveal the universal thermal response of the Unruh type.

Boundary conditions in the Unruh problem

We have analyzed the Unruh problem in the frame of quantum field theory and have shown that the Unruh quantization scheme is valid in the double Rindler wedge rather than in Minkowski spacetime. The double Rindler wedge is composed of two disjoint regions ($R$- and $L$-wedges of Minkowski spacetime) which are causally separated from each other. Moreover the Unruh construction implies existence of boundary condition at the common edge of $R$- and $L$-wedges in Minkowski spacetime. Such boundary condition may be interpreted as a topological obstacle which gives rise to a superselection rule prohibiting any correlations between $r$- and $l$- Unruh particles. Thus the part of the field from the $L$-wedge in no way can influence a Rindler observer living in the $R$-wedge and therefore elimination of the invisible "left" degrees of freedom will take no effect for him. Hence averaging over states of the field in one wedge can not lead to thermalization of the state in the other. This result is proved both in the standard and algebraic formulations of quantum field theory and we conclude that principles of quantum field theory does not give any grounds for existence of the "Unruh effect".

Quantum field aspect of Unruh problem

It is shown using both conventional and algebraic approach to quantum field theory that it is impossible to perform quantization on Unruh modes in Minkowski spacetime. Such quantization implies setting boundary condition for the quantum field operator which changes topological properties and symmetry group of spacetime and leads to field theory in two disconnected left and right Rindler spacetimes. It means that "Unruh effect" does not exist.

Description of Relativistic Heavy--Light Quark--Antiquark Systems via Dirac Equations

Starting from the QCD Lagrangian and taking into account both perturbative and nonperturbative effects, we use the method of vacuum correlators to derive the Dirac equation (rigorously for the Coulomb interaction and heuristically for the confining potential) for a system consisting of a light quark and heavy antiquark. As a result the confining potential is a Lorentz scalar, and the Coulomb part the fourth component of a 4-vector. The energy spectrum of the Dirac equation is considered for these potentials. Numerical calculations of energy eigenvalues $E=E_{nκ}$ are performed, and some exact solutions of the Dirac equation in the case $E=0$ are found. An effective-potential method convenient for qualitative study of the solutions of the Dirac equation is developed. The connection with experimental spectra of $D$- and $B$-mesons is briefly discussed.
