Transverse momentum spectra of hadrons produced in central heavy-ion collisions

In-medium effects of transverse-mass distributions of quarks and gluons are considered assuming a possible local equilibrium for colorless quark objects like mesons and baryons created in central A+A collisions. It is shown that the average square of the transverse momentum for these partons grows and then saturates when the initial energy increases. Within the quark-gluon string model it leads to the energy dependence of hadron transverse mass spectra which is similar to that observed in heavy ion collisions. Comparison with other scenarios is given.

Inertial mechanism: dynamical mass as a source of particle creation

A kinetic theory of vacuum particle creation under the action of an inertial mechanism is constructed within a nonpertrubative dynamical approach. At the semi-phenomenological level, the inertial mechanism corresponds to quantum field theory with a time-dependent mass. At the microscopic level, such a dependence may be caused by different reasons: The non-stationary Higgs mechanism, the influence of a mean field or condensate, the presence of the conformal multiplier in the scalar-tensor gravitation theory etc. In what follows, a kinetic theory in the collisionless approximation is developed for scalar, spinor and massive vector fields in the framework of the oscillator representation, which is an effective tool for transition to the quasiparticle description and for derivation of non-Markovian kinetic equations. Properties of these equations and relevant observables (particle number and energy densities, pressure) are studied. The developed theory is applied here to describe the vacuum matter creation in conformal cosmological models and discuss the problem of the observed number density of photons in the cosmic microwave background radiation. As other example, the self-consistent evolution of scalar fields with non-monotonic self-interaction potentials (the W-potential and Witten - Di Vecchia - Veneziano model) is considered. In particular, conditions for appearance of tachyonic modes and a problem of the relevant definition of a vacuum state are considered.

Equation of State for Hot and Dense Matter: $σ$-$ω$-$ρ$ Model with Scaled Hadron Masses and Couplings

The proposed earlier relativistic mean-field model with hadron masses and coupling constants depending on the $σ$-meson field is generalized to finite temperatures. Within this approach we simulate the in-medium behavior of the hadron masses motivated by the Brown-Rho scaling. The high-lying baryon resonances and boson excitations as well as excitations of the $σ$, $ω$ and $ρ$ fields interacting via mean fields are incorporated into this scheme. Thermodynamic properties of hot and dense hadronic matter are elaborated with the constructed equation of state. Even at zero baryon density, effective masses of $σ$-$ω$-$ρ$-$N$ excitations abruptly drop down for $T\gsim 170$ MeV and reach zero at a critical temperature $T=T_{cσ}\sim 210$ MeV. Below $T_{cσ}$ (at $T\sim 190$ MeV) the specific heat gets a peak like at crossover. We demonstrate that our EoS can be matched with that computed on the lattice for high temperatures provided the baryon resonance couplings with nucleon are partially suppressed. In this case the quark liquid would masquerade as the hadron one. The model is applied to description of heavy ion collisions in a broad collision energy range. It might be especially helpful for studying phase diagram in the region near possible phase transitions.

QCD Matter: A Search for a Mixed Quark-Hadron Phase

Physics aspects of a JINR project to reach the planned 5A GeV energy for the Au and U beams and to increase the bombarding energy up to 10A GeV are discussed. The project aims to search for a possible formation of a strongly interacting mixed quark-hadron phase. The relevant problems are exemplified. A need for scanning heavy-ion interactions in bombarding energy, collision centrality and isospin asymmetry is emphasized.

Lattice QCD Constraints on the Nuclear Equation of State

Based on the quasi-particle description of the QCD medium at finite temperature and density we formulate the phenomenological model for the equation of state that exhibits crossover or the first order deconfinement phase transition. The models are constructed in such a way to be thermodynamically consistent and to satisfy the properties of the ground state nuclear matter comply with constraints from intermediate heavy--ion collision data. Our equations of states show quite reasonable agreement with the recent lattice findings on temperature and baryon chemical potential dependence of relevant thermodynamical quantities in the parameter range covering both the hadronic and quark--gluon sectors. The model predictions on the isentropic trajectories in the phase diagram are shown to be consistent with the recent lattice results. Our nuclear equations of states are to be considered as an input to the dynamical models describing the production and the time evolution of a thermalized medium created in heavy ion collisions in a broad energy range from SIS up to LHC.

Dynamical phase trajectories for relativistic nuclear collisions

Central collisions of gold nuclei are simulated by several existing models and the central net baryon density rho and the energy density eps are extracted at successive times, for beam kinetic energies of 5-40 GeV per nucleon. The resulting trajectories in the (rho, eps) phase plane are discussed from the perspective of experimentally exploring the expected first-order hadronization phase transition with the planned FAIR at GSI or in a low-energy campaign at RHIC.

Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions within 3-Fluid Hydrodynamics: Hadronic Scenario

A 3-fluid hydrodynamic model for simulating relativistic heavy-ion collisions is introduced. Alongside with two baryon-rich fluids, the new model considers time-delayed evolution of a third, baryon-free (i.e. with zero net baryonic charge) fluid of newly produced particles. Its evolution is delayed due to a formation time, during which the baryon-free fluid neither thermalizes nor interacts with the baryon-rich fluids. After the formation it starts to interact with the baryon-rich fluids and quickly gets thermalized. Within this model with pure hadronic equation of state, a systematic analysis of various observables at incident energies between few and about 160A GeV has been done as well as comparison with results of transport models. We have succeeded to reasonably reproduce a great body of experimental data in the incident energy range of E_{lab} = (1-160)A GeV. The list includes proton and pion rapidity distributions, proton transverse-mass spectra, rapidity distributions of Lambda and antiLambda hyperons, elliptic flow of protons and pions (with the exception of proton v2 at 40A GeV), multiplicities of pions, positive kaons, phi-mesons, hyperons and antihyperons, including multi-strange particles. This agreement is achieved on the expense of substantial enhancement of the interflow friction as compared to that estimated proceeding from hadronic free cross sections. However, we have also found out certain problems. The calculated yield of K^- is approximately by a factor of 1.5 higher than that in the experiment. We have also failed to describe directed transverse flow of protons and pion at E_{lab} > 40A GeV. This failure apparently indicates that the used EoS is too hard and thereby leaves room for a phase transition.

Semi-central In-In collisions and Brown-Rho scaling

In connection with the claim made at the Quark Matter 2005 Conference that the Brown-Rho scaling is ruled out by NA60 data we consider dimuon production from semi-central In+In collisions in a full dynamical model. It is shown that if only a modification of the density-dependent $ρ$-mass is allowed, the maximum of dimuon invariant mass spectra is only slightly below experimental one. The additional inclusion of the temperature-dependent modification factor shifts the spectrum maximum toward lower invariant masses making calculation results incompatible with data. A further study is needed to disentangle the BR dropping $ρ$ mass scaling and strong broadening.

Dilepton production from hydrodynamically expanding fireball

A hybrid model is put forward for describing relativistic heavy ion collisions. The early interaction stage responsible for entropy creation is calculated within the transport Quark-Gluon String Model resulting in an initial state. The passage to subsequent isoentropic expansion proceeds with exact account for all conservation laws. Relativistic 3D hydrodynamics with the mixed phase equation of state is applied to this expansion stage. Essential differences in evolution of a fireball, described within this model and one for the Bjorken regime, are noted. The in-medium modified $e^+e^-$ spectra are studied and confronted with the recent CERES/NA45 data for 8% central Pb+Au collisions at the bombarding energy 158 AGeV.

Lattice QCD Constraints on Hybrid and Quark Stars

A QCD-motivated dynamical-quasiparticle model with parameters adjusted to reproduce the lattice-QCD equation of state is extrapolated from region of high temperatures and moderate baryonic densities to the domain of high baryonic densities and zero temperature. The resulting equation of state matched with realistic hadronic equations of state predicts a phase transition into the quark phase at higher densities than those reachable in neutron star interiors. This excludes the possibility of the existence of hybrid (hadron-quark) stars. Pure quark stars are possible and have low masses, small radii and very high central densities. Similar results are obtained for a simple bag model with massive quarks, fitted to reproduce the same lattice results. Self-bound quark matter is also excluded within these models. Uncertainties in the present extrapolation re discussed. Comparison with standard bag models is made.

Canonical Strangeness and Distillation Effects in Hadron Production

Strangeness canonical ensemble for Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics is reconsidered for excited nuclear systems with non-vanishing net strangeness. A new recurrence relation method is applied to find the partition function. The method is first generalized to the case of quantum strangeness canonical ensemble. Uncertainties in calculation of the K+/pi+ excitation function are discussed. A new scenario based on the strangeness distillation effect is put forward for a possible explanation of anomalous strangeness production observed at the bombarding energy near 30 AGeV. The peaked maximum in the K+/pi+ ratio is considered as a sign of the critical end-point reached in evolution of the system rather than a latent heat jump emerging from the onset of the first order deconfinement phase transition.

Equation of state of deconfined matter within dynamical quasiparticle description

A simple quasiparticle model, motivated by lowest-order perturbative QCD, is proposed. It is applied to interpret the lattice QCD equation of state. A reasonable reproduction of the lattice data is obtained. In contrast to existing quasiparticle models, the present model is formulated in dynamical rather than thermodynamical terms, and is easily applicable to a system with finite baryon density. In particular, the model simulates the confinement property.

Statistical Multifragmentation of Non-Spherical Expanding Sources in Central Heavy-Ion Collisions

We study the anisotropy effects measured with INDRA at GSI in central collisions of Xe+Sn at 50 A.MeV and Au+Au at 60, 80, 100 A.MeV incident energy. The microcanonical multifragmentation model with non-spherical sources is used to simulate an incomplete shape relaxation of the multifragmenting system. This model is employed to interpret observed anisotropic distributions in the fragment size and mean kinetic energy. The data can be well reproduced if an expanding prolate source aligned along the beam direction is assumed. An either non-Hubblean or non-isotropic radial expansion is required to describe the fragment kinetic energies and their anisotropy. The qualitative similarity of the results for the studied reactions suggests that the concept of a longitudinally elongated freeze-out configuration is generally applicable for central collisions of heavy systems. The deformation decreases slightly with increasing beam energy.

Evolution of Baryon-Free Matter Produced in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

A 3-fluid hydrodynamic model is introduced for simulating heavy-ion collisions at incident energies between few and about 200 AGeV. In addition to the two baryon-rich fluids of 2-fluid models, the new model incorporates a third, baryon-free (i.e. with zero net baryonic charge) fluid which is created in the mid-rapidity region. Its evolution is delayed due to a formation time $τ$, during which the baryon-free fluid neither thermalizes nor interacts with the baryon-rich fluids. After formation it thermalizes and starts to interact with the baryon-rich fluids. It is found that for $τ$=0 the interaction strongly affects the baryon-free fluid. However, at reasonable finite formation time, $τ$=1 fm/c, the effect of this interaction turns out to be substantially reduced although still noticeable. Baryonic observables are only slightly affected by the interaction with the baryon-free fluid.

Three-Fluid Simulations of Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

A relativistic 3-fluid 3D hydrodynamic model has been developed for describing heavy-ion collisions at incident energies between few and $\sim$ 200 A$\cdot$GeV. In addition to two baryon-rich fluids which simulate mutually decelerating counterflows of target and projectile nucleons, the new model incorporates evolution of a third, retarded baryon-free fluid created by this decelerated baryonic matter. Different equations of state, including those with the deconfinement phase transition, are treated. A reasonable agreement with experiment is illustrated by proton rapidity spectra, their dependence on collision centrality and beam energy.
