A quantum kinetic equation for particle production in the Schwinger mechanism

A quantum kinetic equation is derived for the description of pair production in a time-dependent homogeneous electric field $E(t)$. As a source term, the Schwinger mechanism for particle creation is incorporated. Possible particle production due to collisions and collisional damping are neglected. The main result is a kinetic equation of non-Markovian character. In the low density approximation, the source term is reduced to the leading part of the well known Schwinger formula for the probability of pair creation. We discuss the momentum and time dependence of the derived source term and compare with other approaches.

The quark condensate in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions

We compute the modification of the quark condensate $<\bar{q} q>$ in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions and estimate the 4-volume, where the quark condensate is small ($<\bar{q}q>/<\bar{q} q>_0\leq$ 0.1--0.3) using hadron phase-space distributions obtained with the quark-gluon string model. As a function of the beam energy the 4-volume rises sharply at a beam energy $E_{lab}/A \simeq$ (2--5) GeV, remains roughly constant up to beam energies $\simeq 20$ GeV and rises at higher energies. At low energies the reduction of the condensate is mainly due to baryons, while at higher energies the rise of the 4-volume is due to the abundant mesons produced. Based on our results we expect that moderate beam energies on the order of 10 GeV per nucleon are favourable for studying the restoration of chiral symmetry in a baryon-rich environment in nucleus-nucleus collisions.

A Mixed Phase Model and the 'Softest Point' Effect

Particularities of the statistical mixed phase model for describing the deconfinement phase transition and physics constraints on the model parameters, are discussed. The modifications proposed concern an improved treatment of hadron-hadron interactions within the nonlinear mean-field model of nuclear matter and an inclusion of the one-gluon exchange correction into the quark-gluon sector of the mixed phase thermodynamic potential. It is shown that the mixed phase model successfully reproduces both the available lattice data on the QCD deconfinement transition and thermodynamic characteristics of hadron systems evaluated within the modern models. The 'softest point' of the equation of state resulting in a possible formation of a long-lived fireball in nuclear collisions (the 'softest point' effect) is analyzed. The obtained results are confronted with the data on the two-phase model. Some manifestation of the mixed phase formation and deconfinement transition is estimated in fireball expansion dynamics. We discuss experimental possibilities of observing the softest point effect as a signal of the deconfinement phase transition.

Dynamical derivation of a quantum kinetic equation for particle production in the Schwinger mechanism

A quantum kinetic equation has been derived for the description of pair production in a time-dependent homogeneous electric field $E(t)$. As a source term, the Schwinger mechanism for particle creation is incorporated. Possible particle production due to collisions and collisional damping are neglected. The main result is a closed kinetic equation of the non-Markovian type. In the low density approximation, the source term is reduced to the leading part of the well known Schwinger formula for the probability of pair creation. We compare the formula obtained with other approaches and discuss the differences.

Towards exotic nuclei via binary reaction mechanism

Assuming a binary reaction mechanism, the yield of isotopes near the heaviest $N=Z$ neutron-deficit nucleus $^{100}$Sn is studied with a microscopic transport model. The large influence of nuclear shell structure and isotope composition of the colliding nuclei on the production of exotic nuclei is demonstrated. It is shown that the reaction $^{54}$Fe+$^{106}$Cd seems to be most favourable for producing primary exotic Sn isotopes which may survive if the excitation energy in the entrance reaction channel is less than about 100 MeV. In the case of large differences in the charge (mass) numbers between entrance and exit channels the light fragment yield is essentially fed from the decay of excited primary heavier fragments. The existence of optimal energies for the production of some oxygen isotopes in the binary mechanism is demonstrated for the $^{32}$S+$^{197}$Au reaction.

Relativistic quantum kinetic equation of the Vlasov type for systems with internal degrees of freedom

We present an approach to derive a relativistic kinetic equation of the Vlasov type. Our approach is especially reliable for the description of quantum field systems with many internal degrees of freedom. The method is based on the Heisenberg picture and leads to a kinetic equation which fulfills the conservation laws. We apply the approach to the standard Walecka Lagrangian and an effective chiral Lagrangian.

Towards a New Strategy of Searching for QCD Phase Transition in Heavy Ion Collisions

We reconsider the Hung and Shuryak arguments in favour of searching for the deconfinement phase transition in heavy ion collisions {\em downward} from the nominal SPS energy, at $E_{lab} \approx 30 \ GeV/A$ where the fireball lifetime is the longest one. Using the recent lattice QCD data and the mixed phase model, we show that the deconfinement transition might occur at the bombarding energies as low as $E_{lab}=3 - 5 \ GeV/A$. Attention is drawn to the study of the mixed phase of nuclear matter in the collision energy range $E_{lab}= 2-10 \ GeV/A$.

Decay Anisotropy of $e^+e^-$ Sources from $pN$ and $pd$ collisions

A full calculation of lepton-pair angular characteristics is carried out for $e^+e^-$ pairs created in $pp$, $pn$ and $pd$ collisions at intermediate energies. It is demonstrated that the proposed new observable, the dilepton decay anisotropy, quite sensitively changes for different sources and may be useful for their disentangling. The relevance of the dilepton decay anisotropy is shown in the context of a puzzling energy behavior for the ratio of the lepton yield from $pd$ to $pp$ reactions as observed at the BEVALAC.
