Accelerator-Feasible N-Body Nonlinear Integrable System

Nonlinear N-body integrable Hamiltonian systems, where N is an arbitrary number, attract the attention of mathematical physicists for the last several decades, following the discovery of some number of these systems. This paper presents a new integrable system, which can be realized in facilities such as particle accelerators. This feature makes it more attractive than many of the previous such systems with singular or unphysical forces.

On Quantum Integrable Systems

Many quantum integrable systems are obtained using an accelerator physics technique known as Ermakov (or normalized variables) transformation. This technique was used to create classical nonlinear integrable lattices for accelerators and nonlinear integrable plasma traps. Now, all classical results are carried over to a nonrelativistic quantum case.

Nonlinear optics as a path to high-intensity circular machines

What prevents us from building super-high intensity accelerators? The answer is case-specific, but it often points to one of the following phenomena: machine resonances, various tune shifts (and spreads), and instabilities. These three phenomena are interdependent in all present machines. In this paper we propose a path toward alleviating these phenomena by making accelerators nonlinear. This idea is not new: Orlov (1963) and McMillan (1967) have proposed initial ideas on nonlinear focusing systems for accelerators. However, practical implementations of such ideas proved elusive, until recently.

A search for integrable four-dimensional nonlinear accelerator lattices

Integrable nonlinear motion in accelerators has the potential to introduce a large betatron tune spread to suppress instabilities and to mitigate the effects of space charge and magnetic field errors. To create such an accelerator lattice one has to find magnetic and/or electric field combinations leading to a stable integrable motion. This paper presents families of lattices with one invariant where bounded motion can be easily created in large volumes of the phase space. In addition, it presents two examples of integrable nonlinear accelerator lattices, realizable with longitudinal-coordinate-dependent magnetic or electric fields with the stable nonlinear motion, which can be solved in terms of separable variables.

Ring for test of nonlinear integrable optics

Nonlinear optics is a promising idea potentially opening the path towards achieving super high beam intensities in circular accelerators. Creation of a tune spread reaching 50% of the betatron tune would provide strong Landau damping and make the beam immune to instabilities. Recent theoretical work has identified a possible way to implement stable nonlinear optics by incorporating nonlinear focusing elements into a specially designed machine lattice. In this report we propose the design of a test accelerator for a proof-of-principle experiment. We discuss possible studies at the machine, requirements on the optics stability and sensitivity to imperfections.

Nonlinear Integrable Ion Traps

Quadrupole ion traps can be transformed into nonlinear traps with integrable motion by adding special electrostatic potentials. This can be done with both stationary potentials (electrostatic plus a uniform magnetic field) and with time-dependent electric potentials. These potentials are chosen such that the single particle Hamilton-Jacobi equations of motion are separable in some coordinate systems. The electrostatic potentials have several free adjustable parameters allowing for a quadrupole trap to be transformed into, for example, a double-well or a toroidal-well system. The particle motion remains regular, non-chaotic, integrable in quadratures, and stable for a wide range of parameters. We present two examples of how to realize such a system in case of a time-independent (the Penning trap) as well as a time-dependent (the Paul trap) configuration.

Nonlinear Accelerator Lattices with One and Two Analytic Invariants

Integrable systems appeared in physics long ago at the onset of classical dynamics with examples being Kepler's and other famous problems. Unfortunately, the majority of nonlinear problems turned out to be nonintegrable. In accelerator terms, any 2D nonlinear nonintegrable mapping produces chaotic motion and a complex network of stable and unstable resonances. Nevertheless, in the proximity of an integrable system the full volume of such a chaotic network is small. Thus, the integrable nonlinear motion in accelerators has the potential to introduce a large betatron tune spread to suppress instabilities and to mitigate the effects of space charge and magnetic field errors. To create such an accelerator lattice one has to find magnetic and electrtic field combinations leading to a stable integrable motion. This paper presents families of lattices with one invariant where bounded motion can be easily created in large volumes of the phase space. In addition, it presents 3 families of integrable nonlinear accelerator lattices, realizable with longitudinal-coordinate-dependent magnetic or electric fields with the stable nonlinear motion, which can be solved in terms of separable variables.

Resonant Atom Traps for Electromagnetic Waves

Exitation of atomic levels due to interaction with electromagnetic waves has been the subject of numerous works, both experimental and theoretical. This topic became of interest in accelerator physics in relation to high efficiency charge exchange injection into rings for high beam power applications. Taking equations of resonant atom-wave interaction equations as a basis, this paper shows that there exist some interesting phenomena which lead to the existence of trapped electomagnetic waves (photon traps) in a medium that consists of atoms with transition frequencies in proximity to the wave frequency. These traps may exist in random and periodic lattices, and may have very low loss rate. The atomic medium can serve as an excellent wavegiude or tool to form and transmit electromagnetic waves for applications to accelerators and to electromagnetic devices in general, where high pressure gas use is acceptable. In addition, such traps in gases may accumulate substantial energy for a long period of time, leading to the possibility of creating objects similar (or equivalent) to ball lightning.

Arrays and the octahedron recurrence

Recently, in papers by Knutson, Tao and Woodward, Henriques and Kamnitzer, Pak and Vallejo have been constructed several interesting bijections of associativity and commutativity. In the first two papers bijections relate special sets of discretely concave functions (hives) on triangular grids and the octahedron recurrence plays the key role for these bijections. Pak and Vallejo related special sets of Young tableaux and constructions of these bijections based on standard algorithms in this theory, jeu de taquen, Schutzenberger involution, tableaux switching, etc. In this paper we investigate these constructions from the third point of view, combinatorics of arrays, theory worked out recently by the authors. Arrays naturally related as well to functions on the lattice of integers as to Young tableaux. In the tensor category of arrays, the bijections of associativity and commutativity arise naturally. We establish coincidence of our bijections with that defined in the first two papers and in the integer-valued set-up with the bijection in the third paper (that is, in particular, a solution of Conjecture 1 by Pak and Vallejo). In order to relate different approaches and to reveal combinatorics of the octahedron recurrence, we, first, show that the octahedron recurrence agrees with discrete convexity and, second, we construct another bijection using the octahedron recurrence, the functional form of the RSK correspondence.
