Tunable Light Scattering in Cast Organic Scintillators via BaSO$_4$ Nanoparticle Doping: A Short Summary

We summarize the fabrication and optical characterization of small-format (2 x 2 x 2 cm$^3$) cast organic scintillators based on Eljen EJ-290 resin, doped with barium sulfate (BaSO$_4$) powder at mass fractions from 0 % to 5 %. The goal is to tune the scattering length of the scintillator largely independently of its absorption and light output, so that scintillation light is localized on a controllable spatial scale matched to the fiber pitch of wavelength-shifting (WLS) fiber read-out. The scattering length is found to decrease from 6.05(8) cm at 1 % to 0.83(1) cm at 5 %, while the absolute light yield falls by only about 15 %. These results are a first proof of concept that the photon-transport scale in cast scintillators can be engineered on purpose, enabling position-sensitive scintillator tiles for fiber-readout sampling calorimeters and large-area muon trackers. Wavelength-shifter coated polystyrene as an easy-to-build and low-cost plastic scintillator detector

We studied the light yield of a pure polystyrene slide coated with wavelength-shifter molecules, coupled to a photomultiplier, using beta particles from a 90-Sr source, as a possible easy-to-build, low-cost plastic scintillator detector. Comparison measurements were performed with an uncoated polystyrene slide as well as with uncoated and coated PMMA slides, the latter which can only produce Cherenkov light when being traversed by charged particles. The results with the single (double) coated polystyrene slides show about 4.9 (6.3) times higher detected photon yield compared to the uncoated slide. For comparison, the light yield of a polystyrene-based extruded plastic scintillator material doped with PTP and POPOP was measured as well. The absolute detected light yield motivates future studies for developing easy-to-build, low-cost polystyrene-based plastic scintillator detectors.

PWO crystals for CMS electromagnetic calorimeter : studies of the radiation damage kinetics

Kinetics of radiation damage of the PWO crystals under irradiation and recovery were studied. Crystals were irradiated with dose corresponding to average one expected in the electromagnetic calorimeter (working dose irradiation). Radiation damage and recovery were monitored through measurements of PWO optical transmission. An approach is proposed which allows evaluating the influence of the PWO crystals properties on the statistical term in the energy resolution of the electromagnetic calorimeter. The analysis also gives important information about the nature of the radiation damage mechanism in scintillation crystals. The method was used during development of technology of the mass production of radiation hard crystals and during development of methods for crystals certification

On the Radiation Damage of BTeV EMCAL Detector Unit

Hamamatsu photomultiplier tubes (PMT) and various PMT window materials were exposed to gamma irradiation. Tests were performed with absorbed doses of 1 krad and 120 krad. Initial recommendations on PMT types to use in the BTeV electromagnetic calorimeter are stated.
