Bulk Motions of Spiral Galaxies in the z = 0.03 Volume

We analyze the peculiar velocity field for 2400 flat spiral galaxies selected from an infrared sky survey (2MFGC). The distances to the galaxies have been determined from the Tully-Fisher relation in the photometric J band with a dispersion of 0.45 mag. The bulk motion of this sample relative to the cosmic microwave background (3K) frame has an amplitude of 199+/-37 km/s in the direction l = 290 +/- 11, b = +1 +/- 9 degree. The amplitude of the dipole motion tends to decrease with distance in accordance with the expected convergence of bulk flows in the 3K frame. We believe that external massive attractors similar to the Shapley cluster concentration are responsible for \~60% of the local flow velocity in the z = 0.03 volume.

HI Observations of Flat Galaxies

We present the HI observations of 94 flat spiral galaxies from RFGC (the Revised Flat Galaxy Catalog) and 14 galaxies from 2MFGC (the 2MASS selected Flat Galaxy Catalog) performed with the 100-m radio telescope in Effelsberg (Germany). HI fluxes, heliocentric radial velocities, and HI line widths are given for 65 detected galaxies. We present a mosaic of HI profiles. We calculated some of the global parameters of the galaxies and analyzed the linear correlations between them. The ratios of the total (indicative) masses of the galaxies to their luminosities lie within the range 0.4 with a mean of 3.8 ($M_{\sun}/L_{\sun}$), and the mean mass fraction of neutral hydrogen is 13%. Upper limits are given for the radio fluxes from 43 undetected galaxies.

Dwarf spheroidal galaxies in nearby groups imaged with HST

An all-sky list of 88 nearby dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies with distances D < 10 Mpc is considered. Most of the objects have recently been found by Karachentseva & Karachentsev based on POSSII/ESO-SERC survey. A hundred more dSph galaxies are expected in this volume, being missed so far because of their low luminosity and low surface brightness. Apart from 22 dSph members of the Local Group, there are 33 dSphs in other nearby groups that have been resolved recently into stars with HST. Only 5% of the local dSphs are situated outside the known groups. We discuss observational correlation between basic parameters of the dwarf spheroidal galaxies, in particular, absolute magnitude, surface brightness, metallicity, and so-called "tidal index". The observed number of dSphs in group increases with luminosity of its brightest galaxy. In a "synthetic" nearby group, dwarf spheroidal galaxies are distributed in depth quite symmetrically about the principal galaxy, having an rms distance scatter of 200 kpc. Projected radial distribution of dSphs in the synthetic group follows the profile N(R) ~ exp(-R/200 kpc).

The 2MASS-selected Flat Galaxy Catalog

An all-sky catalog of 18020 disc-like galaxies is presented. The galaxies are selected from the Extended Source Catalog of the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (XSC 2MASS) basing on their 2MASS axial ratio a/b >= 3. The Catalog contains data on magnitudes of a galaxy in the J, H, K_s bands, its axial ratio, positional angle, index of luminosity concentration, as well as identification of the galaxy with the LEDA and the NED databases. Unlike the available optical catalogs, the new 2MFGC catalog seems to be more suitable to study cosmic streaming on a scale of z <= 0.1. The dipole moment of distribution of the bright (K < 11 mag) 2MFGC objects (l = 227 degr, b = 41 degr or SGL = 90 degr, SGB = -43 degr) lies within statistical errors (+/- 15 degr) in the direction of the IRAS dipole and the optical RFGC dipole.

The Revised Flat Galaxy Catalogue

We present a new improved and completed version of the Flat Galaxy Catalogue (FGC) named the Revised Flat Galaxy Catalogue (RFGC) containing 4236 thin edge-on spiral galaxies and covering the whole sky. The Catalogue is intended to study large-scale cosmic streamings as well as other problems of observational cosmology. The dipole moment of distribution of the RFGC galaxies (l = 273 degr; b =+19 degr) lies within statistical errors (+/-10 degr) in the direction of the Local Group motion towards the Microwave Background Radiation (MBR).

The Bulk Motion of Flat Edge-On Galaxies Based on 2MASS Photometry

We report the results of applying the 2MASS Tully-Fisher (TF) relations to study the galaxy bulk flows. For 1141 all-sky distributed flat RFGC galaxies we construct J, H, K_s TF relations and find that Kron $J_{fe}$ magnitudes show the smallest dispersion on the TF diagram. For the sample of 971 RFGC galaxies with V_{3K} < 18000 km/s we find a dispersion $σ_{TF}=0.42^m$ and an amplitude of bulk flow V= 199 +/-61 km/s, directed towards l=301 degr +/-18 degr, b=-2 degr +/-15 degr. Our determination of low-amplitude coherent flow is in good agreement with a set of recent data derived from EFAR, PSCz, SCI/SCII samples. The resultant two- dimensional smoothed peculiar velocity field traces well the large-scale density variations in the galaxy distributions. The regions of large positive peculiar velocities lie in the direction of the Great Attractor and Shapley concentration. A significant negative peculiar velocity is seen in the direction of Bootes and in the direction of the Local void. A small positive peculiar velocity (100 -- 150 km/s) is seen towards the Pisces-Perseus supercluster, as well as the Hercules - Coma - Corona Borealis supercluster regions.

Distances to Nearby Galaxies in Sculptor

We present an analysis of Hubble Space Telescope/WFPC2 images of nine nearby galaxies in Sculptor. We derive their distances from the luminosity of the tip of the red giant branch stars with a typical accuracy of ~ 12%. Their distances are 4.21 Mpc (Sc22), 4.92 Mpc (DDO226), 3.94 Mpc (NGC253), 3.40 Mpc (KDG2), 3.34 Mpc (DDO6), 3.42 Mpc (ESO540-030), 4.43 Mpc (ESO245-05), 4.27 Mpc (UGCA442), and 3.91 Mpc (NGC7793). The galaxies are concentrated in several spatially separated loose groups around NGC300, NGC253, and NGC7793. The Sculptor galaxy complex together with the CVn I cloud and the Local Group form a 10 Mpc amorphous filament, apparently driven by the free Hubble flow.

Local galaxy flows within 5 Mpc

We present Hubble Space Telescope/WFPC2 images of sixteen dwarf galaxies as part of our snapshot survey of nearby galaxy candidates. We derive their distances from the luminosity of the tip of the red giant branch stars with a typical accuracy of ~12%. The resulting distances are 4.26 Mpc (KKH 5), 4.74 Mpc (KK 16), 4.72 Mpc (KK 17), 4.66 Mpc (ESO 115-021), 4.43 Mpc (KKH 18), 3.98 Mpc (KK 27), 4.61 Mpc (KKH 34), 4.99 Mpc (KK 54), 4.23 Mpc (ESO 490-017), 4.90 Mpc (FG 202), 5.22 Mpc (UGC 3755), 5.18 Mpc (UGC 3974), 4.51 Mpc (KK 65), 5.49 Mpc (UGC 4115), 3.78 Mpc (NGC 2915), and 5.27 Mpc (NGC 6503). Based on distances and radial velocities of 156 nearby galaxies, we plot the local velocity-distance relation, which has a slope of H_0 = 73 km/(c * Mpc) and a radial velocity dispersion of 85 km/s. When members of the M81 and CenA groups are removed, and distance errors are taken into account, the radial velocity dispersion drops to sigma_v=41 km/s. The local Hubble flow within 5 Mpc exibits a significant anisotropy, with two infall peculiar velocity regions directed towards the Supergalactic poles. However, two observed regions of outflow peculiar velocity, situated on the Supergalactic equator, are far away (~50 degr.) from the Virgo/anti-Virgo direction, which disagrees with a spherically symmetric Virgo-centric flow. About 63% of galaxies within 5 Mpc belong to known compact and loose groups. Apart from them, we found six new probable groups, consisting entirely of dwarf galaxies.

Galaxy Flow in the Canes Venatici I Cloud

We present an analysis of Hubble Space Telescope/WFPC2 images of eighteen galaxies in the Canes Venatici I cloud. We derive their distances from the luminosity of the tip of the red giant branch stars with a typical accuracy of ~12 %. The resulting distances are 3.9 Mpc (UGC 6541), 4.9 Mpc (NGC 3738), 3.0 Mpc (NGC 3741), 4.5 Mpc (KK 109), >6.3 Mpc (NGC 4150), 4.2 Mpc (UGC 7298), 4.5 Mpc (NGC 4244), 4.6 Mpc (NGC 4395), 4.9 Mpc (UGC 7559), 4.2 Mpc (NGC 4449), 4.4 Mpc (UGC 7605), 4.6 Mpc (IC 3687), 4.7 Mpc (KK 166), 4.7 Mpc (NGC 4736), 4.2 Mpc (UGC 8308), 4.3 Mpc (UGC 8320), 4.6 Mpc (NGC 5204), and 3.2 Mpc (UGC 8833). The CVn I cloud has a mean radial velocity of 286 +- 9 km/s, a mean distance of 4.1 +- 0.2 Mpc, a radial velocity dispersion of 50 km/s, a mean projected radius of 760 kpc, and a total blue luminosity of 2.2 * 10^{10} L_{\sun}. Assuming virial or closed orbital motions for the galaxies, we estimated their virial and their orbital mass-to-luminosity ratio to be 176 and 88 M_{\sun}/L_{\sun}, respectively. However, the CVn I cloud is characterized by a crossing time of 15 Gyr, and is thus far from a state of dynamical equilibrium. The large crossing time for the cloud, its low content of dSph galaxies ($ < 6$ %), and the almost ``primordial'' shape of its luminosity function show that the CVn I complex is in a transient dynamical state, driven rather by the free Hubble expansion than by galaxy interactions.

Tidal dwarfs in the M81 group: the second generation?

We derive quantitative star formation histories of the four suspected tidal dwarf galaxies in the M81 group, HolmbergIX, BK3N, Arp-loop (A0952+69), and Garland, using Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Planetary Camera2 images in F606W and F814W obtained as part of a Snapshot survey of dwarf galaxies in the Local Universe. We consider the spatial distribution and ages of resolved stellar populations in these dwarf irregular galaxies. We use synthetic color-magnitude diagrams to derive the ages of the major star formation episodes, star formation rates, and approximate metallicity ranges. All the galaxies show evidence of continuous star formation between about 20 and 200 Myr ago with star formation rates in the range 7.5*10^(-3)- 7.6*10^(-4) M(sun)/yr. The metallicity of the detected stars spans a wide range, and have lower than solar abundance. A possible scenario is that all four dwarf galaxies were formed from material in the metal-poor outer part of the giant spiral galaxy M81 after the tidal interaction between M81, M82, and NGC3077 about 200 Myr ago. While we do not directly detect pronounced old stellar populations, the photometric limits of our data are such that the presence of such a population is not entirely ruled out.

The 2MASS Tully-Fisher relation for flat edge-on galaxies

The spiral edge-on galaxies from the "Revised Flat Galaxy Catalog" (RFGC) are identified with the Extended Source Catalog of the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS). A relative number of the 2MASS detected galaxies is 2996/4236 = 0.71. We consider the statistical properties of the Tully-Fisher relations for the edge-on galaxies in the B, I, J, H, and K_s bands. The slope of derived TF relations increases steadily from 4.9 in the B band to 9.3 in the K one. The effect is mainly due to the internal extinction which is different in dwarf and giant spiral galaxies seen edge-on that leads to the tight correlation between galaxy color and luminosity. The moderate scatter of the RFGC galaxies in the `color-luminosity' diagram, 0.86 mag., provides us with a new "cheap" method of mass measurements of distances to galaxies on the basis of modern photometric sky surveys.

The very local Hubble flow

We present Hubble Space Telescope/WFPC2 images of eighteen galaxies situated in the vicinity of the Local Group (LG) as part of an ongoing snapshot survey of nearby galaxies. Their distances derived from the magnitude of the tip of the red giant branch are 1.92+-0.10 Mpc (ESO 294-010), 3.06+-0.37 (NGC404), 3.15+-0.32 (UGCA105), 1.36+-0.07 (SexB), 1.33+-0.08 (NGC3109), 2.64+-0.21 (UGC6817), 2.86$+-0.14 (KDG90), 2.27+-0.19 (IC3104), 2.54+-0.17 (UGC7577), 2.56$+-0.15 (UGC8508), 3.01+-0.29 (UGC8651), 2.61+-0.16 (KKH86), 2.79$+-0.26 (UGC9240), 1.11+-0.07 (SagDIG), 0.94+-0.04 (DDO210), 2.07$+-0.18 (IC5152), 2.23+-0.15 (UGCA438), and 2.45+-0.13 (KKH98). Based on the velocity-distance data for 36 nearest galaxies around the LG, we find the radius of the zero-velocity surface of the LG to be R_0 = (0.94+-0.10) Mpc, which yields a total mass M_{LG} = (1.3+-0.3)*10^{12} M_{\sun}. The galaxy distribution around the LG reveals a Local Minivoid which does not contain any galaxy brighter than M_V=-10 mag within a volume of ~100 Mpc^3. The local Hubble flow seems to be very cold, having a one-dimensional mean random motion of ~30 km/s. The best-fit value of the local Hubble parameter is 73+-15 km/s Mpc^{-1}. The luminosity function for the nearby field galaxies is far less steep than one for members of the nearest groups.

The Stellar Populations of the Cetus Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

We present Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 photometry in the V and I passbands of the recently discovered Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxy in Cetus. Our color-magnitude diagram extends from above the first ascent red giant branch (RGB) tip to approximately half a magnitude below the horizontal branch (HB). Adopting a reddening of E(B-V) = 0.03, the magnitude of the RGB tip yields a distance modulus of (m-M)o = 24.46 +/- 0.14. After applying the reddening and distance modulus, we have utilized the color distribution of RGB stars to determine a mean metal abundance of [Fe/H] = -1.7 on the Zinn & West scale with an intrinsic internal abundance dispersion of +/-0.2 dex. An indirect calculation of the HB morphology of Cetus based on the mean dereddened HB color yields (B-R)/(B+V+R) = -0.91 +/- 0.09, which represents an HB that is redder than what can be attributed solely to Cetus' metal abundance. As such, Cetus suffers from the `second parameter effect' in which another parameter besides metallicity is controlling the HB morphology. If we adopt the conventional `age hypothesis' explanation for the second parameter effect, then this implies that Cetus is 2-3 Gyr younger than Galactic globular clusters at its metallicity.

A new galaxy near the Local Group in Draco

We present HST WFPC2 and ground-based images of the low surface brightness dwarf Irr/Sph galaxy KKR~25 in Draco. Its colour-magnitude diagram shows red giant branch stars with the tip at I = 22.32 mag, and the presence of some blue stars. The derived true distance modulus, 26.35 \+- 0.14 mag, corresponds to linear distances of KKR25 from the Milky Way and from the Local Group centroid of 1.86 and 1.79 Mpc, respectively. The absolute magnitude of the galaxy, M_V = -10.48, its linear diameter (0.54 Kpc) and central surface brightness (24.0 +- 0.2 mag\arcsec^2) are typical of other dIrr/dSphs in the Local Group. Being situated just beyond the radius of the zero-velocity surface of the Local Group, KKR25 moves away from the LG centroid at a velocity of V_{LG} = + 72 km/s.

WFPC2 Observations of Two dSph Galaxies in the M81 Group

We have obtained HST WFPC2 and ground-based images of two low surface brightness dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the M81 group, FM1 and KKH57. Their colour-magnitude diagrams show red giant branches with tips at I = 23.77 +- 0.14 and I = 23.97 +- 0.17, respectively. The derived true distance moduli, 27.66 +- 0.16 and 27.96 +- 0.19, agree well with the mean distance modulus of the M81 group, 27.84 +- 0.05. Absolute V magnitudes of the galaxies (-11.46 and -10.85), their colours ((B-V) = 0.88 and 0.80), and central surface brightnesses ($Σ_{0,V}$ = 24.8 and 24.4 mag/$\sq\arcsec$) are in the range of other dSph companions of M81, M31, and Milky Way. With two new objects the maximum projected radius of the dwarf spheroidal subsystem around M81 is 380 kpc.

The Stellar Content and Distance of UGC 4483

We present HST/WFPC2 observations of UGC 4483, an irregular galaxy in the M81/NGC 2403 complex. Stellar photometry was carried out with HSTphot, and is complete to V ~ 26.0 and I ~ 24.7. We measure the red giant branch tip at I = 23.56 +/- 0.10 and calculated a distance modulus of (m-M)o = 27.53 +/- 0.12 (corresponding to a distance of 3.2 +/- 0.2 Mpc), placing UGC 4483 within the NGC 2403 subgroup. We were able to measure properties of a previously-known young star cluster in UGC 4483, finding integrated magnitudes of V = 18.66 +/- 0.21 and I = 18.54 +/- 0.10 for the stellar contribution (integrated light minus Halpha and [OIII] contribution), corresponding to an age of ~10-15 Myr and initial mass of ~10^4 Msun. This is consistent with the properties of the cluster's brightest stars, which were resolved in the data for the first time. Finally, a numerical analysis of the galaxy's stellar content yields a roughly constant star formation rate of 1.3x10^-3 Msun/yr and mean metallicity of [Fe/H] = -1.3 dex from 15 Gyr ago to the present.

Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies in the M81 Group Imaged with WFPC2

We obtained HST/WFPC2 images of the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies K61, K63, K64, DDO78, BK6N, and kk77 in the M81 group. Our color-magnitude diagrams show red giant branches with tips (TRGB) falling within the range of I = [23.8 -24.0] mag. The derived true distance moduli (DM) of the 6 dSphs ranging from 27.71 to 27.93 mag are consistent with their membership in the group. Given accurate distances of 5 other group members, which have been derived via TRGB or cepheids, the mean DM of the M81 group is (27.84+-0.05) mag. We find the difference of the mean distances to the M81 and NGC2403 groups to be D_M81 - D_NGC2403 =(0.5+-0.2) Mpc, which yields a deprojected separation of 0.9 Mpc. With respect to the Local group, M81 and NGC2403 have radial velocities of 106 and 267 km/s respectively, while the velocities of the group centroids are 142 and 281 km/s. The higher velocity of the closer system may indicate that these groups are moving towards each other, similar to the Milky Way and M31 in the Local group. Several globular cluster candidates have been identified in the galaxies.
