Statistics of anomalously localized states at the center of band E=0 in the one-dimensional Anderson localization model

We consider the distribution function $P(|ψ|^{2})$ of the eigenfunction amplitude at the center-of-band (E=0) anomaly in the one-dimensional tight-binding chain with weak uncorrelated on-site disorder (the one-dimensional Anderson model). The special emphasis is on the probability of the anomalously localized states (ALS) with $|ψ|^{2}$ much larger than the inverse typical localization length $\ell_{0}$. Using the solution to the generating function $Φ_{an}(u,ϕ)$ found recently in our works we find the ALS probability distribution $P(|ψ|^{2})$ at $|ψ|^{2}\ell_{0} >> 1$. As an auxiliary preliminary step we found the asymptotic form of the generating function $Φ_{an}(u,ϕ)$ at $u >> 1$ which can be used to compute other statistical properties at the center-of-band anomaly. We show that at moderately large values of $|ψ|^{2}\ell_{0}$, the probability of ALS at E=0 is smaller than at energies away from the anomaly. However, at very large values of $|ψ|^{2}\ell_{0}$, the tendency is inverted: it is exponentially easier to create a very strongly localized state at E=0 than at energies away from the anomaly. We also found the leading term in the behavior of $P(|ψ|^{2})$ at small $|ψ|^{2}<< \ell_{0}^{-1}$ and show that it is consistent with the exponential localization corresponding to the Lyapunov exponent found earlier by Kappus and Wegner and Derrida and Gardner.

Levy flights and multifractality in quantum critical diffusion and in classical random walks on fractals

We employed the method of virial expansion in order to compute the retarded density correlation function (generalized diffusion propagator) in the critical random matrix ensemble in the limit of strong multifractality. We found that the long-range nature of the Hamiltonian is a common root of both multifractality and Levy flights which show up in the power-law intermediate- and long-distance behavior, respectively, of the density correlation function. We review certain models of classical random walks on fractals and show the similarity of the density correlation function in them to that for the quantum problem described by the random critical long-range Hamiltonians.

Return probability and scaling exponents in the critical random matrix ensemble

We study an asymptotic behavior of the return probability for the critical random matrix ensemble in the regime of strong multifractality. The return probability is expected to show critical scaling in the limit of large time or large system size. Using the supersymmetric virial expansion we confirm the scaling law and find analytical expressions for the fractal dimension of the wave functions $d_2$ and the dynamical scaling exponent $μ$. By comparing them we verify the validity of the Chalker's ansatz for dynamical scaling.

Commensurability effects in one-dimensional Anderson localization: anomalies in eigenfunction statistics

The one-dimensional (1d) Anderson model (AM) has statistical anomalies at any rational point $f=2a/λ_{E}$, where $a$ is the lattice constant and $λ_{E}$ is the de Broglie wavelength. We develop a regular approach to anomalous statistics of normalized eigenfunctions $ψ(r)$ at such commensurability points. The approach is based on an exact integral transfer-matrix equation for a generating function $Φ_{r}(u, ϕ)$ ($u$ and $ϕ$ have a meaning of the squared amplitude and phase of eigenfunctions, $r$ is the position of the observation point). The descender of the generating function ${\cal P}_{r}(ϕ)\equivΦ_{r}(u=0,ϕ)$ is shown to be the distribution function of phase which determines the Lyapunov exponent and the local density of states. In the leading order in the small disorder we have derived a second-order partial differential equation for the $r$-independent ("zero-mode") component $Φ(u, ϕ)$ at the $E=0$ ($f=\frac{1}{2}$) anomaly. This equation is nonseparable in variables $u$ and $ϕ$. Yet, we show that due to a hidden symmetry, it is integrable and we construct an exact solution for $Φ(u, ϕ)$ explicitly in quadratures. Using this solution we have computed moments $I_{m}=N<|ψ|^{2m}>$ ($m\geq 1$) for a chain of the length $N \rightarrow \infty$ and found an essential difference between their $m$-behavior in the center-of-band anomaly and for energies outside this anomaly. Outside the anomaly the "extrinsic" localization length defined from the Lyapunov exponent coincides with that defined from the inverse participation ratio ("intrinsic" localization length). This is not the case at the $E=0$ anomaly where the extrinsic localization length is smaller than the intrinsic one.

Exact solution for eigenfunction statistics at the center-of-band anomaly in the Anderson localization model

An exact solution is found for the problem of the center-of-band ($E=0$) anomaly in the one-dimensional (1D) Anderson model of localization. By deriving and solving an equation for the generating function $Φ(u,ϕ)$ we obtained an exact expression in quadratures for statistical moments $I_{q}=\langle |ψ_{E}({\bf r})|^{2q}\rangle$ of normalized wavefunctions $ψ_{E}({\bf r})$ which show violation of one-parameter scaling and emergence of an additional length scale at $E\approx 0$.

Dynamical scaling for critical states: is Chalker's ansatz valid for strong fractality?

The dynamical scaling for statistics of critical multifractal eigenstates proposed by Chalker is analytically verified for the critical random matrix ensemble in the limit of strong multifractality controlled by the small parameter $b\ll 1$. The power law behavior of the quantum return probability $P_{N}(τ)$ as a function of the matrix size $N$ or time $τ$ is confirmed in the limits $τ/N\rightarrow\infty$ and $N/τ\rightarrow\infty$, respectively, and it is shown that the exponents characterizing these power laws are equal to each other up to the order $b^{2}$. The corresponding analytical expression for the fractal dimension $d_{2}$ is found.

Fractal superconductivity near localization threshold

We develop a semi-quantitative theory of electron pairing and resulting superconductivity in bulk "poor conductors" in which Fermi energy $E_F$ is located in the region of localized states not so far from the Anderson mobility edge $E_c$. We review the existing theories and experimental data and argue that a large class of disordered films is described by this model. Our theoretical analysis is based on the analytical treatment of pairing correlations, described in the basis of the exact single-particle eigenstates of the 3D Anderson model, which we combine with numerical data on eigenfunction correlations. Fractal nature of critical wavefunction's correlations is shown to be crucial for the physics of these systems. We identify three distinct phases: 'critical' superconductive state formed at $E_F=E_c$, superconducting state with a strong pseudogap, realized due to pairing of weakly localized electrons and insulating state realized at $E_F$ still deeper inside localized band. The 'critical' superconducting phase is characterized by the enhancement of the transition temperature with respect to BCS result, by the inhomogeneous spatial distribution of superconductive order parameter and local density of states. The major new feature of the pseudo-gaped state is the presence of two independent energy scales: superconducting gap $Δ$, that is due to many-body correlations and a new "pseudogap" energy scale $Δ_P$ which characterizes typical binding energy of localized electron pairs and leads to the insulating behavior of the resistivity as a function of temperature above superconductive $T_c$. Two gap nature of the "pseudo-gaped superconductor" is shown to lead to a number of unusual physical properties.

Thermoelectric Transport through a Quantum Dot: Effects of Kondo Channels Asymmetry

We consider effects of magnetic field on the thermopower and thermoconductance of a single-electron transistor based on a quantum dot strongly coupled to one of the leads by a single-mode quantum point contact. We show appearance of two new energy scales: T_{min} ~ |r|^2 E_C(B/B_C)^2 depending on a ratio of magnetic field B and the field B_C corresponding to a full polarization of point contact and T_{max} ~ |r|^2 E_C depending on a reflection amplitude r and charging energy E_C. We predict that the behavior of thermoelectric coefficients is consistent with the Fermi-liquid theory at temperatures T << T_{min}, while crossover from Non-Fermi-liquid regime associated with a two-channel Kondo effect to Fermi-liquid single-channel Kondo behavior can be seen at T_{min}<T<T_{max}.

Random matrix representations of critical statistics

We consider two random matrix ensembles which are relevant for describing critical spectral statistics in systems with multifractal eigenfunction statistics. One of them is the Gaussian non-invariant ensemble which eigenfunction statistics is multifractal, while the other is the invariant random matrix ensemble with a shallow, log-square confinement potential. We demonstrate a close correspondence between the spectral as well as eigenfuncton statistics of these random matrix ensembles and those of the random tight-binding Hamiltonian in the point of the Anderson localization transition in three dimensions. Finally we present a simple field theory in 1+1 dimensions which reproduces level statistics of both of these random matrix models and the classical Wigner-Dyson spectral statistics in the framework of the unified formalism of Luttinger liquid. We show that the (equal-time) density correlations in both random matrix models correspond to the finite-temperature density correlations of the Luttinger liquid. We show that spectral correlations in the invariant ensemble with log-square confinement correspond to a Luttinger liquid in the 1+1 curved space-time with the event horizon, similar to the phonon density correlations in the sonic analogy of Hawking radiation in black holes.

Jumps in current-voltage characteristics in disordered films

We argue that giant jumps of current at finite voltages observed in disordered samples of InO, TiN and YSi manifest a bistability caused by the overheating of electrons. One of the stable states is overheated and thus low-resistive, while the other, high-resistive state is heated much less by the same voltage. The bistability occurs provided that cooling of electrons is inefficient and the temperature dependence of the equilibrium resistance, R(T), is steep enough. We use experimental R(T) and assume phonon mechanism of the cooling taking into account its strong suppression by disorder. Our description of details of the I-V characteristics does not involve adjustable parameters and turns out to be in a quantitative agreement with the experiments. We propose experiments for more direct checks of this physical picture.

One-dimensional Anderson Localization: Devil's staircase of Statistical Anomalies

The statistics of wavefunctions in the one-dimensional (1d) Anderson model of localization is considered. It is shown that at any energy that corresponds to a rational filling factor f=p/q there is a statistical anomaly which is seen in expansion of the generating function (GF) to the order (q-2) in the disorder parameter. We study in detail the principle anomaly at $f=1/2$ that appears in the leading order. The transfer-matrix equation of the Fokker-Planck type with a two-dimensional internal space is derived for GF. It is shown that the zero-mode variant of this equation is integrable and a solution for the generating function is found in the thermodynamic limit.

Infrared catastrophe in two-quasiparticle collision integral

Relaxation of a non-equilibrium state in a disordered metal with a spin-dependent electron energy distribution is considered. The collision integral due to the electron-electron interaction is computed within the approximation of a two-quasiparticle scattering. We show that the spin-flip scattering processes with a small energy transfer may lead to the divergence of the collision integral for a quasi one-dimensional wire. This divergence is present only for a spin-dependent electron energy distribution which corresponds to the total electron spin magnetization M=0 and only for non-zero interaction in the triplet channel. In this case a non-perturbative treatment of the electron-electron interaction is needed to provide an effective infrared cut-off.

Two-eigenfunction correlation in a multifractal metal and insulator

We consider the correlation of two single-particle probability densities $|Ψ_{E}({\bf r})|^{2}$ at coinciding points ${\bf r}$ as a function of the energy separation $ω=|E-E'|$ for disordered tight-binding lattice models (the Anderson models) and certain random matrix ensembles. We focus on the models in the parameter range where they are close but not exactly at the Anderson localization transition. We show that even far away from the critical point the eigenfunction correlation show the remnant of multifractality which is characteristic of the critical states. By a combination of the numerical results on the Anderson model and analytical and numerical results for the relevant random matrix theories we were able to identify the Gaussian random matrix ensembles that describe the multifractal features in the metal and insulator phases. In particular those random matrix ensembles describe new phenomena of eigenfunction correlation we discovered from simulations on the Anderson model. These are the eigenfunction mutual avoiding at large energy separations and the logarithmic enhancement of eigenfunction correlations at small energy separations in the two-dimensional (2D) and the three-dimensional (3D) Anderson insulator. For both phenomena a simple and general physical picture is suggested.

Superbosonization formula and its application to random matrix theory

Starting from Gaussian random matrix models we derive a new supermatrix field theory model. In contrast to the conventional non-linear sigma models, the new model is applicable for any range of correlations of the elements of the random matrices. We clarify the domain of integration for the supermatrices, and give a demonstration of how the model works by calculating the density of states for an ensemble of almost diagonal matrices. It is also shown how one can reduce the supermatrix model to the conventional sigma model.

Eigenfunction fractality and pseudogap state near superconductor-insulator transition

We develop a theory of a pseudogap state appearing near the superconductor-insulator transition in strongly disordered metals with attractive interaction. We show that such an interaction combined with the fractal nature of the single particle wave functions near the mobility edge leads to an anomalously large single particle gap in the superconducting state near SI transition that persists and even increases in the insulating state long after the superconductivity is destroyed. We give analytic expressions for the value of the pseudogap in terms of the inverse participation ratio of the corresponding localization problem.

T-duality in supersymmetric theory of disordered quantum systems

A new super-symmetric representation for quantum disordered systems is derived. This representation is exact and is dual to that of the nonlinear sigma-model. The new formalism is tested by calculating the distribution of wave function amplitudes in the 1d Anderson model. The deviation from the distribution found for a thick wire is detected near the band center E=0.

Nonlinear Quantum Coherence Effects in Driven Mesoscopic Systems

In these pedagogical notes the diffuson-cooperon perturbation theory of weak localization and mesoscopic phenomena is extended to describe non-equilibrium and nonlinear effects in quantum disordered systems. It is shown how such perturbation theory works in the time and frequency domain for essentially nonlinear phenomena. Examples of quantum rectification in a mesoscopic ring and the dynamic localization in quantum dots are discussed in detail.

Coulomb blockade in quantum dots under AC pumping

We study conductance through a quantum dot under Coulomb blockade conditions in the presence of an external periodic perturbation. The stationary state is determined by the balance between the heating of the dot electrons by the perturbation and cooling. We analyze two cooling mechanisms: electron exchange with the cold contacts and emission of phonons. Together with the usual linear Ohmic heating of the dot electrons we consider possible effects of dynamic localization. The combination of the abovementioned factors may result in a drastic change of the shape of the Coulomb blockade peak with respect to the usual equilibrium one.
