Electromagnetic Structure of the Nucleon in the Perturbative Chiral Quark Model

We apply the perturbative chiral quark model (PCQM) at one loop to analyse the electromagnetic structure of nucleons. This model is based on an effective Lagrangian, where baryons are described by relativistic valence quarks and a perturbative cloud of Goldstone bosons. Including the electromagnetic interaction we first develop the formalism up to one-loop in the Goldstone boson fluctuation relying on renormalization by use of counterterms. Local gauge invariance is satisfied both on the Lagrangian level and also for the relevant baryon matrix elements in the Breit frame. We apply the formalism to obtain analytical expressions for the nucleon charge and magnetic form factors, which are expressed in terms of fundamental parameters of low-energy pion-nucleon physics (weak pion decay constant, axial nucleon coupling, strong pion-nucleon form factor) and of only one model parameter (radius of the nucleonic three-quark core). A detailed numerical analysis for the nucleon magnetic moments, charge and magnetic radii and also for the momentum dependence of form factors is presented.

Nucleon Properties in the Perturbative Chiral Quark Model

We apply the perturbative chiral quark model (PCQM) to analyse low-energy nucleon properties: electromagnetic form factors, meson-nucleon sigma-terms and pion-nucleon scattering. Baryons are described as bound states of valence quarks surrounded by a cloud of Goldstone bosons (pi, K, eta) as required by chiral symmetry. The model is based on the following guide lines: chiral symmetry constraints, fulfilment of low-energy theorems and proper treatment of sea-quarks, that is meson cloud contributions. Analytic expressions for nucleon observables are obtained in terms of fundamental parameters of low-energy pion-nucleon physics (weak pion decay constant, axial nucleon coupling constant, strong pion-nucleon form factor) and of only one model parameter (radius of the nucleonic three-quark core). Our results are in good agreement with experimental data and results of other theoretical approaches.

Decays of the pi+ pi- atom

We construct an effective non-relativistic quantum field theory that describes bound states of pi+ pi- pairs and their hadronic decays. We then derive a general expression for the lifetime of the ground state at next-to-leading order in isospin breaking. Chiral perturbation theory allows one to relate the decay rate to the two S-wave pi pi scattering lengths and to several low-energy constants that occur in the chiral Lagrangian. Recent predictions for the scattering lengths give tau = (2.9 \pm 0.1) * 10^{-15} sec. This result may be confronted with pi+ pi- lifetime measurements, like the one presently carried out at CERN.

Sigma-term physics in the perturbative chiral quark model

We apply the perturbative chiral quark model (PCQM) at one loop to analyse meson-baryon sigma-terms. Analytic expressions for these quantities are obtained in terms of fundamental parameters of low-energy pion-nucleon physics (weak pion decay constant, axial nucleon coupling, strong pion-nucleon form factor) and of only one model parameter (radius of the nucleonic three-quark core). Our result for the piN sigma term of about 45 MeV is in good agreement with the value deduced by Gasser, Leutwyler and Sainio using dispersion-relation techniques and exploiting the chiral symmetry constraints.

pi(-)p atom in ChPT: strong energy-level shift

The general formula of the pi(-)p atom strong energy-level shift in the 1s state is derived in the next-to-leading order in the isospin breaking, and in all orders in chiral expansion. Isospin-breaking corrections to the level shift are explicitly evaluated at order p^2 in ChPT. The results clearly demonstrate the necessity to critically reaccess the values of the piN scattering lengths, extracted from the energy-level shift measurement by means of the potential model-based theoretical analysis.

On the choice of heavy baryon currents in the relativistic three-quark model

We test the sensitivity of bottom baryon observables with regard to the choice of the interpolating three-quark currents within the relativistic three-quark model. We have found that the semileptonic decay rates are clearly affected by the choice of currents, whereas the asymmetry parameters show only a very weak dependence on the choice of current.

Spectrum and Decays of Hadronic Atoms

Using non relativistic effective Lagrangian techniques, we analyze the hadronic decay of the pi+pi- atom and the strong energy-level shift of pionic hydrogen in the ground state. We derive general formulae for the width and level shift, valid at next-to-leading order in isospin breaking. The result is expressed in terms of hadronic threshold amplitudes that include isospin-breaking effects. In order to extract isospin symmetric scattering lengths from the data, we invoke chiral perturbation theory, that allows one to relate the scattering lengths to the threshold amplitudes.

Hadronic Atoms in QCD

We propose a non relativistic effective Lagrangian approach to study hadronic atom observables in the framework of QCD (including photons). We apply our formalism to derive a general expression for the width of the pi+pi- atom decaying into two neutral pions. It contains all terms at leading and next-to-leading order in isospin breaking. The result allows one to evaluate the combination a0-a2 of pi-pi S-wave scattering lengths from pi+pi- atom lifetime measurements, like the one presently performed by the DIRAC expeiment at CERN.

Numerical analysis of the pi+pi- atom lifetime in ChPT

We apply Chiral Perturbation Theory at one loop to analyze the general formula for the pi+pi- atom lifetime derived recently in the framework of QCD. The corresponding analytic expression is investigated numerically, and compared with recent work in the literature.

Lambda_b and Lambda_c baryon decays at finite values of heavy quark masses

Semileptonic decays of Lambda_b and Lambda_c baryons are studied within the Relativistic Three-Quark Model using finite heavy quark mass values. Employing the same parameters as have been used previously for the description of exclusive decays of heavy baryons in the heavy quark limit we calculate the six form factors of the process and the corresponding decay rates. Our calculation shows that the ``finite mass'' corrections are important in heavy-to-light transitions and are not negligible in heavy-to-heavy transitions.

On the Lifetime of the pi+pi- Atom

The pi+pi- atom decays -in the ground state - predominantly into two neutral pions. We present a general expression for the corresponding decay width in the framework of QCD (including photons). It contains all terms at leading and next-to-leading order in isospin breaking. The result allows one to evaluate the combination |a_0-a_2| of pi-pi S-wave scattering lengths from pi+pi- lifetime measurements, like the one presently performed by the DIRAC experiment at CERN.

Strong and Radiative Decays of Heavy Flavored Baryons

We analyze strong one-pion and radiative one-photon decays of heavy flavored baryons within a relativistic three-quark model. Employing the same parameters as were used for the description of the semileptonic decays of heavy baryons, we calculate the couplings of one-pion and one-photon transitions of both ground and excited heavy baryon states. We predict the decay rates for all relevant decay modes and compare them with experimental data when available and with the results of other model calculations.

One-Photon Transitions between Heavy Baryons in a Relativistic Three-Quark Model

We study one-photon transitions between heavy baryon states in the framework of a relativistic three-quark model. We calculate the one-photon transition rates for ground-state to ground-state transitions and for some specific excited state to ground-state transitions. Our rate predictions for the most important transitions are: $Γ(Σ^{+}_{c}\to Λ_c^+γ)= 60.7\pm 1.5 $ KeV, $Γ(Ξ^{'+}_{c}\to Ξ_c^+γ) = 12.7\pm 1.5$ KeV, $Γ(Λ_{c1}(2593)\toΛ_c^+γ)=104.3\pm 1.3$ KeV.

Theory of the pi+ pi- atom

The relativistic perturbative approach based on the Bethe-Salpeter (BS) equation is developed for the study of the characteristics of the hadronic pi+ pi- atom. The general expression for the atom lifetime is derived. Lowest-order corrections to the relativistic Deser-type formula for the atom lifetime are evaluated within the Chiral Perturbation Theory. The lifetime of the pi+ pi- atom in the two-loop order of the Chiral Perturbation Theory is predicted to be tau_1=(3.03\pm 0.10)\times 10^{-15}~s.

Charm and Bottom Baryon Decays in the Bethe-Salpeter Approach: Heavy to Heavy Semileptonic Transitions

Charm and bottom baryons and mesons are studied within the framework of a relativistically covariant 3D reduction of the Bethe-Salpeter equation. We carry out an analysis of semileptonic decays of heavy hadrons within this framework using explicit oscillator-type wave functions where we calculate Isgur-Wise functions, decay rates and asymmetry parameters. Within this model we also study the effect of interactions between the light quarks inside the heavy baryon and how they affect the values of the computed heavy baryon observables. We also elaborate on the role of relativistic effects in the calculation of the heavy baryon Isgur-Wise function.

One-Pion Charm Baryon Transitions in a Relativistic Three-Quark Model

We study one-pion transitions between charm baryon states in the framework of a relativistic three-quark model. We calculate the charm baryon-pion coupling factors that govern the S-wave, P-wave and D-wave one-pion transitions from the s-wave and the lowest lying p-wave charm baryon states down to the s-wave charm baryon states. For these we obtain: g_{Σ_cΛ_cπ}=8.88 GeV^{-1}, f_{Λ_{c1}Σ_cπ}=0.52 and f_{Λ_{c1}^*Σ_cπ}=21.5 GeV^{-2}. We compare our rate predictions for the one-pion transitions with experimental results.
