Lattice representation and dark solitons of the Fokas-Lenells equation

This work is devoted to an integrable generalization of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation proposed by Fokas and Lenells. I discuss the relationships between this equation and other integrable models. Using the reduction of the Fokas-Lenells equation to the already known ones I obtain the N-dark soliton solutions.

KdV-Volterra chain

This paper is devoted to the system of coupled KdV-like equations. It is shown that this apparently non-integrable system possesses an integrable reduction which is closely related to the Volterra chain. This fact is used to construct the hyperelliptic solutions of the original system.

Implementation of the Backlund transformations for the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy

The derivation of the Backlund transformations (BTs) is a standard problem of the theory of the integrable systems. Here, I discuss the equations describing the BTs for the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy (ALH), which have been already obtained by several authors. The main aim of this work is to solve these equations. This can be done in the framework of the so-called functional representation of the ALH, when an infinite number of the evolutionary equations are replaced, using the Miwa's shifts, with a few equations linking tau-functions with different arguments. It is shown that starting from these equations it is possible to obtain explicit solutions of the BT equations. In other words, the main result of this work is a presentation of the discrete BTs as a superposition of an infinite number of evolutionary flows of the hierarchy. These results are used to derive the superposition formulae for the BTs as well as pure soliton solutions.

Functional representation of the Volterra hierarchy

In this paper I study the functional representation of the Volterra hierarchy (VH). Using the Miwa's shifts I rewrite the infinite set of Volterra equations as one functional equation. This result is used to derive a formal solution of the associated linear problem, a generating function for the conservation laws and to obtain a new form of the Miura and Backlund transformations. I also discuss some relations between the VH and KP hierarchy.

Backlund transformations for the Nizhnik-Novikov-Veselov equation

The Backlund transformations for the Nizhnik-Novikov-Veselov equation are presented. It is shown that these transformations can be iterated and that the resulting sequence can be described by the Volterra equations. The relationships between the Nizhnik-Novikov-Veselov equation and the Volterra hierarchy are discussed.

Stationary structures in two-dimensional continuous Heisenberg ferromagnetic spin system

Stationary structures in a classical isotropic two-dimensional continuous Heisenberg ferromagnetic spin system are studied in the framework of the (2+1)-dimensional Landau-Lifshitz model. It is established that in the case of \vec S (\vec r, t)= \vec S (\vec r - \vec v t) the Landau-Lifshitz equation is closely related to the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy. This relation is used to obtain soliton structures, which are shown to be caused by joint action of nonlinearity and spatial dispersion, contrary to the well-known one-dimensional solitons which exist due to competition of nonlinearity and temporal dispersion. We also present elliptical quasiperiodic stationary solutions of the stationary (2+1)-dimensional Landau-Lifshitz equation.

Negative Volterra flows

Taking the standard zero curvature approach we derive an infinite set of integrable equations, which taken together form the negative Volterra hierarchy. The resulting equations turn out to be nonlocal, which is usual for the negative flows. However, in some cases the nonlocality can be eliminated. Studying the combined action of both positive (classical) and negative Volterra flows, i.e. considering the differential consequences of equations of the extended Volterra hierarchy, we deduce local equations which seem to be promising from the viewpoint of applications. The presented results give answers to some questions related to the classification of integrable differential-difference equations. We also obtain dark solitons of the negative Volterra hierarchy using an elementary approach.

Functional representation of the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy. II

In this paper I continue studies of the functional representation of the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy (ALH). Using formal series solutions of the zero-curvature condition I rederive the functional equations for the tau-functions of the ALH and obtain some new equations which provide more straightforward description of the ALH and which were absent in the previous paper. These results are used to establish relations between the ALH and the discrete-time nonlinear Schrodinger equations, to deduce the superposition formulae (Fay's identities) for the tau-functions of the hierarchy and to obtain some new results related to the Lax representation of the ALH and its conservation laws. Using the previously found connections between the ALH and other integrable systems I derive functional equations which are equivalent to the AKNS, derivative nonlinear Schrodinger and Davey-Stewartson hierarchies.

Finite genus solutions for the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy

The question of constructing the finite genus quasiperiodic solutions for the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy (ALH) is considered by establishing relations between the ALH and the Fay's identity for the theta-functions. It is shown that using a limiting procedure one can derive from the latter an infinite number of differential identities which can be arranged as an infinite set of differential-difference equations coinciding with the equations of the ALH, and that the original Fay's identity can be rewritten in a form similar to the functional equations representing the ALH which have been derived in the previous works of the author. This provides an algorithm for obtaining some class of quasiperiodic solutions for the ALH, which can be viewed as an alternative to the inverse scattering transform or the algebro-geometrical approach.

'Universality' of the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy

The aim of this paper is to summarize some recently obtained relations between the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy (ALH) and other integrable equations. It has been shown that solutions of finite subsystems of the ALH can be used to derive a wide range of solutions for, e.g., the 2D Toda lattice, nonlinear Schrödinger, Davey-Stewartson, Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) and some other equations. Similar approach has been used to construct new integrable models: O(3,1) and multi-field sigma models. Such 'universality' of the ALH becomes more transparent in the framework of the Hirota's bilinear method. The ALH, which is usually considered as an infinite set of differential-difference equations, has been presented as a finite system of functional-difference equations, which can be viewed as a generalization of the famous bilinear identities for the KP tau-functions.

Functional representation of the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy

The Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy (ALH) is considered in the framework of the inverse scattering approach. After establishing the structure of solutions of the auxiliary linear problems, the ALH, which has been originally introduced as an infinite system of difference-differential equations is presented as a finite system of difference-functional equations. The representation obtained, when rewritten in terms of Hirota's bilinear formalism, is used to demonstrate relations between the ALH and some other integrable systems, the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy in particular.
